Dreaded banjo bolt with filter not where expected

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, just picked up an '08 Legacy GT with ~130k on the odometer yesterday. Two owner car, original turbo (far as I know), was well-maintained.

Given the nice weather, I figured I would tackle checking out that passenger side banjo bolt to check/remove the filter.

I'm following these instructions (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/2-5gt-turbo-oil-supply-banjo-bolt-filter-removal-62371.html), however what confuses me is that when I follow the oil line it seems to be on a different part of the block than I expected based on the photos...

I'll attach the photo I found on the forum that came with helpful MS Paint arrows, along with what I'm looking at.

Notice how the banjo bolt is vertical in the example, yet horizontal in mine. No idea how a 17mm, stubby or not, is going to fit back there without removing more than that bracket.

Mine: (Couldn't get a clear shot of the bolt itself, but you can see the line. Bolt threads into the block from the top):

Am I missing something obvious?

Talking with the previous owner and it seems that they changed the orientation for '08+?

Well, that answers that, anyway.

Given that, any tricks for getting to that bolt besides removing more than the bracket?

On My '08 OBXT the banjo was under the intake tube just in front of the turbo inlet. I was able to extract the intake tube without removing the manifold. Long needle nose pliers got all the pinch clamps off and I but roller clamps on all situated so I could get a screwdriver on them.

You have an '07-'09, where the injectors were changed to top-feeds and the banjo-bolt is now vertical.

I had no problem pulling mine with the regular 17mm combination ratcheting box wrench/spanner that came in my Craftsman mechanics tool set.

The banjo bolts with the filters have a bump on the top of the bolt.
