Buying a 4th Gen, Preferences/experiences?

For some reason I'm not sure I realized the Spec B's had 6MT's before I bought my car. Otherwise I would have held off. Also, I thought they only came with a red leather interior which I was not a fan of frankly (do they only come with a red interior? am I thinking of s2000?). Just say no to red leather son. Tell your friends not to do drugs or buy cars with red leather.

 

Actually, Obsidian is not my first choice either but I was looking around for a little bit and I had a hard time finding a fourth gen that seemed remotely decent. Even settling for a second or third choice color, I still had to drive 2 hours to buy the one I got.

'06s were the only Spec Bs to come with the brick red interior, an they also have the 5MT. '07-'09 Spec Bs have the 6MT.

 

I love the brick red interior in mine, but I can't say I love the 5MT although it is much more engaging than a 5EAT.

Maybe someday I'll sell my car and look for a 6MT spec. B. To be honest, when I can afford it, I'll probably just get an STI.

 

engaging, like man and Legacy are one combined entity. Is that the ultimate goal or something?......come on, I'm tempted to show an uphill climb video under half throttle through the gears.

 

For the purpose of staying somewhat on topic and OP swaying towards the Auto car, it's relevant to mention IMO better than a soon to be broken 5MT.

Original owner,:wub: my 5eat, 110k, STG1 tune, catless UP,RSB, endlinks, MPSS tires, plenty of power and good handling for what it is. Rather have a S402 wagon but that's not possible. mines been very reliable and well maintained. Try and find a lower mileage DD that hasn't been heavily modded and passes the important tests and you'll love it. Go stage 2 or above and be prepared for possible issues as should be expected when you get the modding bug.

Quick question, What should I be expecting to pay for these said cars. I've seen a couple of ads on Craigslist for Outback Xt's and Legacy Gt's ranging from $6-12k.

 

Also Am I allowed to post some examples on CL from what i've seen? just to give you guys an idea of what I'm working with.

 

It really is Slim pickings here in the Bay Area.

Looks nice. Its due for a timing belt so I'd make sure thats done. I'm sure being a car in the city there will be some scuffs and dings but nothing major.

 

 

Again good looking wagon. Interior appears to be in fantastic shape and they mention the timing belt being done with is great.

You want a wagon so don't settle for a sedan. Wait it out so you get what you really want.

Again due for a timing belt simply due to age. Doesn't mention mileage in the ad which would be a good thing to know. I'd suggest still looking at those ones in the 12-14k range as you may be able to negotiate them down.

Those are pretty standard prices for 100k+ mile LGT's. 10-14 is reasonable for lower mile/newer 4th gens too. With this particular list - I'd say Max's suggestion of having an extra pile of money handy would be sound advice.

 

Also, have a beady eye towards people who are trying a little too hard to sell thier car with "pros and cons". I would probably dismiss the car that had the "reer" brakes done. Spelling errors as simple as that make one question how that person would take care of an LGT.

Being in the Bay Area it is very diverse in culture here so I don't read into it too much as it could simply be a translation error or error in typing. That whole ad reads very much like an english as a second language person. so best bet would be to go look at the car to get an actual idea. But then again he said he really wants a wagon not a sedan so that takes that one out of the mix.

Not to add fire to the flame 2Fiver but you also spelled "their" wrong as "thier" :lol: jk. And yes that did actually throw me off. Probably wouldn't be able to negotiate either.

 

@magnusonsubie I see that you're from the Bay Area. Is there even a Legacy crowd here? And thanks for the Comments. I really appreciate it. The black LGT looks really nice. But can anyone explain to me why the LGT wagon does not have a rear LSD?

if it would need rebuilding I have a STI short block with crankshaft and rods not forged though. Might be something I can achieve if this fellow is willing to let it go for $5000 which is the lowest he'd go. Again. Any thoughts are helpful.
