My 2009 GT was manufactured in 05/2008. -
What to look for when buying a used GT?

Haha my 2002 Legacy would slap in the winter for the first five or ten minutes until they expanded in the cylinder and all that. Once the car was really warmed up it ran fine. Went through a lot of oil though. -

If the car is in good shape that’s a fair asking price for an 09 with that mileage. Once you pay to have it inspected you can talk them down from there based on what needs to be done but the later models are more rare, newer, have a couple minor improvements over the early turbo fourth gens. -

I was in a similar position as you and “upgraded” to a GT. I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into though and it’s fairly expensive to maintain these if you do it right and even more expensive if you don’t. That being said, don’t buy one unless you pay a third party shop to do an inspection and compression test. Make sure the timing belt has been done, the turbo hasn’t been replaced. if the turbo fails catastrophically which is common, it can put metal shrapnel in the oil in system which soon thereafter causes the engine to fail. The bill ends up being around 6-8k and that’s not an exaggeration. From there you can haggle or walk away once you have the details from the shop. Make sure the timing belt has been done. Seriously don’t don’t go turbo Subaru unless you are prepared to drop some serious money in the next few years. In addition to the thousands I’ve spent on mine in the two years I’ve owned it, there has been way more stress than when I had the NA Legacy. And my engine and turbo and timing belt have been fine so far. -

09 Lifted Spec B. Details
JustCallMeNick replied to 09specb_vt's topic in Fourth Generation Legacy (2005 - 2009)
Interesting! I like the idea of making it more of a practical car. It reminds me of the Fourth Gen Outback Sedan. My 09 is slightly lowered a little more ground clearance would be nice. Ultimately I think I'd like to look for an old beater 4WD SUV or wagon. -
Should I sell or recycle stock DP

Sell it or keep it in case you want to return the car to stock someday. -
Is this a good first car?

Honestly, even if you're buying a pre-2010 non-turbo Subaru, pay to get it checked out first and then either haggle based on the inspection results (they will give you an estimate for all the work needed on the car) or find a different car. Head gaskets and steering racks are not cheap and the rest of the things add up fast if you don't do them yourself (rusty exhaust systems, O2 sensors, wheel bearings $$$, etc.). -
My patient little man helping papa change out the cabin filter. Plus a couple other pictures of Enzo.

That's how I read the gauge too but let's be honest - is it really that helpful? I'm frankly kind of embarrassed by it because it seems so silly. They engineered a really good looking gauge but then chose to redundantly display MPG. Subaru - always looking for the cheap way out. Haha. No one is fooled...

I love this thread! I was just thinking about posting a similar thread last week but instead pertaining to your individual car as opposed to fourth gen Legacies. This thread makes more sense though. I noticed the 37° warning two nights ago for the first time. I wouldn't have known what it meant except that one time I had a rental Camaro with the same feature but the Camaro had a more explicit message that it may be slippery. One thing that I found weird about my car after I bought it was the dash warning about an ominous "Anniversary Date." LOL And yes, The radio volume maxes out before the sound gets very loud. In my third gen you could blast the volume to the moon, well past the point the speakers could handle it. Here's a quirk that really irritates me: The car is a 2.5L Turbo but has a classy, built-in non-numerical, meaningless, analog MPG gauge that just sways back and forth but doesn't really tell you anything. All you can infer from it is, when you put your foot down on the accelerator, your gas mileage is worse, and when you let off, it is better. Haha you don't say... Why couldn't that be a boost gauge instead? How sweet would it be to have a built in integrated boost gauge in the gauge cluster? Instead there's no boost gauge at all.

Haha I had no idea. I've been manually creating multiple quote responses in a separate browser window on another monitor.
