Senseless1's 1998 Subaru Legacy GT 2.2 NA-T Build

Recommended Posts

Alright, getting back into the legacy build now.

Had a caliper seize up on me, so tomorrow morning I'll be replacing the front brakes with new calipers, rotors, and pads and flushing the brake fluid all around. Then Sunday going to pick up an EJ25d and a set of FRS wheels. Still haven't gotten around to the heated seat install yet, but that's something I'm missing right about now. I have completed the parts list for the engine build as well. Due to my wedding budget killing me plans have shifted a bit to just going with a stock ej22e bottom end with the EJ25d heads and run as much boost as the STi yellows can support for as long as the engine runs. I'll be building a high compression hybrid as a backup motor as well, but I assume the trans will go before the motor does. The latest plan is to build the motor over the winter and as soon as I can take the BRZ out next spring swap everything over.

Also hitting up a dyno day next weekend for a baseline dyno prior to boost.

Picked up the ej25d from a 98 impress RS from a fellow enthusiast with a baller VIP style second gen with 3rd gen front end widebodied out, slammed, and with the double sunroofs! He also was kind enough to hook us up with a baller wood grain steering wheel. The engine included an engine stand as well. I ended up just biting the bullet and buying an engine hoist and spent the remainder of the night assembling the hoist and stand and removing the spare engine from the car. I then made a last minute run to the parts store for enough brake fluid for a full fluid swap. Tomorrow I'll be picking up the FRS wheels and finally doing the front brakes.

I've been dealing with some health issues that are slowing me down a bit. I wasn't able to get to the brakes after the road trip for the wheels, so I worked really late tonight so I can take some time off tomorrow during the daylight to knock them out. I found a local Subaru enthusiast who works for a collision shop who does tire mounting, balancing, and alignments on the side, so I'm going to keep it in the family for finishing off the new wheel and tire setup. Tire prices are killing me though lol.

So here are the pics finally. After finally getting settled, I went ahead and spent a few hours cleaning and reorganizing the garage before doing the brake job. I also rotated the tires and think I can probably run the junky tires I have until we get some snow. This will help me save up for some tires. It's pretty awesome to have a hoist and engine stand finally. I feel confident that I finally have the bigger items I need to make this happen. Now it's just scouting for a low mileage ej22e with a good shortblock and seeing what parts I get for Christmas. Baseline Dyno day scheduled for Sunday! There is a local shop that just opened and just got a new dyno, so they're charging $50 for 3 pulls. Best dyno day price I've seen around here, so It's a good opportunity to get a baseline and begin building a relationship for negotiating an hourly dyno rental fee for future tuning purposes.

I am thinking that I'll probably just street tune it to make it safe on the stock 8 psi wastegate, then when I have some more money go back to the dyno and crank it up until I hit 300. I may go ahead and run a water meth kit as well just to be safe, but I believe the OEM sti yellows should flow enough fuel to get me up to 300.

Here is the garage before cleaning lol

Looks like my front passenger side axle is about to explode the day before my scheduled baseline dyno... Looks like instead of heated seats tomorrow I'll be changing my first axle! Nothing like a deadline to keep me motivated and growing as a wannabe mechanic!

Are you still goin the emanage route for tuning?

Yes I have the emanage on hand already, just waiting to figure out how to wire it in. I'll probably start by just throwing the walbro 255lph fuel pump in, keep the stock injectors and run the vf39 on wastegate pressure (I have a MAF car) to test out everything before I add such a complex step that could cause problems.

Also, I got the new axle in and back on track for tomorrow's baseline dyno.

Which style and color injectors do you have? I've got the later style 2.5 top feed green set lying around but I dunno if they are a higher cc than whats in there now.

I haven't verified fitment, but was told that with the ej25d fuel rail I can use the oem STi "yellow top" injectors that are 535cc. I picked up a used set, and I plan to diy clean them in solvent and replace the rubber. I think the injector's in there now are around half the size of the yellow tops. I think that these injectors being close to double the flow will make tuning easier (I can just start by pulling 50% fuel across the board).

I have little faith that this all will go together without incident knowing my luck and how life sometimes works though. I'll be filming the engine work and report back as well.

Also, despite multiple random issues with the dyno day I did eventually get on the dyno today final numbers are 104.2 awhp 118.0 awtq from the 2.2L. still waiting on the high res video, but have a crappy cell phone video and pic of the dyno printout and parts list here: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=584789831707906&id=497548917098665

  • 2 weeks later...

Well I have to admit this heated seat install is taking quite a bit longer than I anticipated.

I have two wiring harnesses from auto cars, but mine is a manual so connector R5 AT Selector lever illumination light has no plug. I don't know enough about electrical circuits to understand if I can just leave this unplugged or if I need to complete the circuit. After a bit of a freakout and staring at wiring diagram PDFs I just decided to move forward with just leaving it unplugged to see if I get illumination to my switches. I have 6 total switches to test for broken bulbs. I went ahead and soldered as much as I could, but I really don't want to cut the factory harness to try and solder the remaining 3 wires from the solenoid, so I'll be using the quick splice connectors for the solenoid ground, fused 12v power, and the green solenoid wire at their junctions with the factory harness. All other connections have been soldered. Filming as I go has really slowed me down as well as a bad batch of chinese food lmao. Poor planning left me trying to re-use the hog ring clips when swapping over the elements, which after beer 4 made things difficult. I also had to learn as I go with the upholstery. rain is keeping me from finishing. So far I just have to solder the inline fuse in and quick splice the 12v and green solenoid then test then tidy up the harness some more for an oem look and reassemble.

When I am finished I'll likely have enough parts to build an extra harness and have everything but the heated seat elements that I can sell if anyone would be interested once the install video is up. If you find heated seats with good condition matching fabric then I can prep this harness such that your install will be much much easier than mine. lol

Has anyone else done this yet? I used the how to from SLI, but got caught up a few times.

Well the interior is a disaster lmao, but in spite of the rain and darkness at 5pm I have heated seats! Because I pulled my head unit in order to run wiring under the dash I also went ahead and soldered the radio harness up to the new head unit and am going to leave everything torn apart somewhat in order to make installing the amp, new speakers, new speaker wire, new head unit, and new shift linkage parts I have cost me less time. I can't really mess around too much the rest of this week anyway. I'm going to go ahead and build out and clean up the spare harness to look exactly as the one I have working, if anyone is interested in making an offer to help me recoup some money from this project. I should have a better update this weekend. If I cannot sell the second heated seat harness I am kicking around the idea of sourcing some more elements and using the other two switch slots to add heating elements to the rear seats LOL At worst it would be like having a spare setup stored in car haha

I have to admit that this project was a little more challenging than I expected, but I was forced to find solutions and problem solve. I also ended up digging through wiring diagrams again to make sure I had the right connectors because wiring scares me. I did film everything so hopefully this can be a little easier for the next person.

Need to stop these updates so late at night. Mushy brain syndrome.

Photobucket is completely broken for me. I can log in and see my images, but anything else I try including upload or contacting support I just keep getting logged out and redirected to the login screen.

Does anyone recommend a better image hosting service?

Yeah that exhaust is really over drafted, you need some sort of restriction or baffling to get rid of the raspiness. It depends what you prefer.

I am probably going to add a large resonator when the turbo hybrid swap goes in. Just in case I have any fitment issues I want to wait until then to address it.

Thanks for the feedback twisty! I try to keep my non public stuff offline LOL, but did find that imgur has an effective process. I don't think I can drag and drop a ton of pictures like I used to with photobucket, but imgur serves all of my other wants as of now. If that changes I'll check out tinypic!

tinypic has multiple file upload as well, and you can set them private and separate by album as well. the ones i keep private are just the camera roll from my phone, just stuff that isnt meant for the general public to see, not necessarily ones i dont want on the net. i share them from there to family, friends, work and other things. i havent used imgur at all, beyond browsing their public dumps from other people

This thing is the BEST Subaru Tool of all time, I don't know why it took soo long for someone to make it but THANK GOD!!

I'm interested to see the video you did for installing the heated seat elements, I snagged a harness from the Pick'n'Pull but have been dragging my feet to get around to installing the heating pads into the seat. As for the hog rings I just used heavy duty zip ties when I did an install on my father in-laws 05 OBS.

Keep up the thread :icon_bigg
