cww516
The '10-'12 2.5i also calls for 5W-30, the changeover in oil weights happened with the move from the EJ/EZ blocks to FA/FB. Not sure what the FA20DIT calls for, although I want to say the '14 FXT wants 0W-20, so it's probably the same for the '15+ WRX.

I have two cased of the ATF sitting in my garage...wish someone would buy it. You can also use the ATF in your power steering. fredrik94087
How much? I'm going to be changing the tranny fluid in the Fozz very soon. Let's talk. the ATF goes for $12.63 each on google search. I was trying to sell a case of 12 for $80. cant beat that price. shipping it would cost an arm and a leg. Runs very well under 5W40 Motul, Castrol Edge or Rotella T6 (disregard what NASIOC popular opinion says about what they call 'Brotella' and FA20DIT). Blackstone OSAs clearly show the newer motor benefits from a 5W40 over a 5W30 or 0/5W20 in the lower 49 and similar climates. https://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/PRNoMaster.aspx?unitid=6383184

I have a case of it waiting for track days. After a lot of reading around, I settled for Rotella T6 (5w40). It says Diesel engine oil on it, but further reading on the internet suggested Shell changed the labeling so they could keep a certain amount of zinc and phos in the oil. I bought 4 one gallon jugs at once. I swapped from the Redline 10w40 to the Rotells T6 5w40. Car gets to temp faster. I considered the Redline 5w40, but that would be 2x the price per oil change for DD at very similar protection. My OCI is at 2500 ATM. I also took 5 quality oil filter and hacked them up: Mobil1, Subaru, K&N, Wix XP, Royal Purple. Do you want to know which one was the best IMHO? Wix XP. I bought the two they had left on the shelf and ordered 4 more. ...how is the Motul ATF? I'm considering making the change in the Tribeca. It is a solid performer and holds up very well. Perscitus
Agreed Fred. My brother has been running Rotella T6 in his Stage 2 CVT WRX for the past three oil changes. Blackstone OSAs come back great. Zero issues in both cold (~5-10F) or hot (+90F). Motul ATF, Amsoil ATF, Redline ATF - all good.
fredrik94087
I had to know. Wix XP and Royal Purple have a screen mesh. The one for the Wix XP is missing in the close-up of the filter media. The two have about same length of media, but the Wix XP is not as stretched out. However, the Wix XP media is wider "It's within spec" - SOA "Depth is only shallowness viewed from the side." - Fredism "So, how much did it cost for your car to be undriveable ." - Stephen (very close friend) "You have done so much it would be stupid to go back." - Sunny of Guru Electronics 2018Q50RS | 2015WrxThread | Shrek
Timothy.B
I ended up getting the Amsoil preferred customer. I got 8qts of signature full synthetic for like $55. You gotta pay shipping but it seems worth it. Ordered the ATF fluid as well since it's the pretty cheap. I forgot the price for the ATF but tax and shipping for 8qts and 6 qts of the ATF was around $145. Soon as it warms up more I'll get some for the diffs. Then time for brake fluid, coolant, power steering. The service menu says coolant flush every 30k I think. Is this correct? I keep thinking the coolant doesn't need touched til after 100k. I might be confusing myself with our VW Jetta, lol. Timothy.B's 2011 LEGACY 3.6R

But since timing belts are suggested before that mark, I don't think it's necessary to swap before that unless it's contaminated and if so there may be bigger issues to consider, like a leaking head gasket. orndog
Blue. Crap, just bought a 2010 Fozzie with 55k miles. Coolant was a little low so I topped it off with green Also, assumed since it was blue it had been changed by the Mazda dealer I bought it from so I dumped in a bottle of Subaru additive. From the little bit that I've read, it probably isn't a big deal at all especially if the majority is still the Subaru coolant. Maybe when you do the 100k maintenance you add a coolant change to the list. VF54 to 20G to VF54 to 18G build thread

Subaru would have to prove that the 5w40 caused the problem and since they say on page 12-5 of the owners manual that you can use 5w40 in a pinch when 5w30 isn't available they might have a bit trouble doing that. fredrik94087
i was told the 5w40 is dino oil not synthetic. anyhoo. Yes, Subaru must show the part/item that caused the failure was indeed the 5w40 before denying a claim. aaaand I saw acumenhokie over at nasioc...so Hi!!! seiyafan
Has anyone tried 0-20W for the 3.6R? We rarely see 90+ days in the summer here and winter can get -5F to -10F a few times, wonder if 0-20W is better suited for me.
