  1. I have been on vacation since this weekend. This past saturday, I made a Subaru parts order for maintenance items I am going to do on my Legacy and Outback. My package was delivered yesterday and some a-hole stole my package. It probably is in the trash or thrown on the side of road somewhere, because I am sure the thief probably isn't going know what to do with the gaskets, oil plug crush washers, radiator caps, super coolant etc. I was planning on doing some maintenance this weekend, but I guess that is out the door.

Some people really freakin suck! Sorry you have to deal with that.

  2. Stewdogg: When will yours be up and running? I can't wait to hear your impressions.

The block went to the machine shop this week and I was told I was first in line, so I hope that means it will get to the builder next week. I have a couple Saturday's after that to put it together and get it in the car. I'm hoping I can start it the 20th or 27th of this month and start the break in period.

I guess it also hinges on getting my turbo back from BNR as well.

Seeing 3 GT's cruising Music Row would certainly top what we saw on our last trip there.

I don't know if you can top a Smokey and the Bandit Trans Am, especially more than one. When was that pic from?

  3. Thanks man!

I was thinking the same thing. Just making sure someone around here didn't know something I didn't.

Don't over think it... haha, I was planning on having a bunch of time to figure out what kind of build I want, but have rather been forced to decide everything right away. I haven't even had the car for a year. I have been overthinking everything.:)

  4. Alright, I have decided to go with the Fel Pro MLS head gasket kit. I was thinking the sixstarbernie ones, but with go with the traditional Fel Pro's.

Now to pick a timing belt kit. I will be getting the OEM Subaru water pump.

Six star Bernie has two different timing belt kits for our cars. they are about $100 different in price and the only difference I can see is the different timing belts between the kits.

For OEM both the LGT and STi (at least for 2010 LGT and 2011 STi) share the same part numbers for the timing belt. On Bernie's site it says the more expensive kit has a STi spec timing belt... what does that mean and is it worth it in my build?

  5. For timing belts kits.

The water pump is only available through OEM and Gates, I don't trust Gates anymore.

sixstarbernie sell timing kits and it seem like they are sourcing all oem parts. Someone here recommend them to me, but I had already bought my timing belt components already. I was going to try them out on my next timing belt. My Outback has one of their kits in it from just before I bought it.

If I was going with another brand, I would do the Contitech (which is continental) or AC Delco.

Thanks!! I will check out the sixstarbernie.

It's really tough verifying if parts are actually for this car and not the fourth gen because they lump the 2010's into the fourth gen parts a lot.

I would bet you can get frozenboost to make you a kit with that intercooler core, same as their other kits. My biggest issue is where to mount the water tank at? Maybe move the battery to the trunk and put the tank in that location. I wouldn't be comfortable having the tank reservoir in my trunk.

But I am going to seriously look into the AWIC I think for the weather here it would be well worth looking at.

Looks like their kits are categorized via HP. They have a 350/600/1200HP kit and then you pick your parts to complete the kit to your needs/wants.

Seems to be a cheaper option over a better stage 2 TMIC and the same if not cheaper than a new FMIC.

  6. Would you consider something like this?

    http://www.frozenboost.com/liquid-air-intercooler/water-to-air-intercooler-p-1006.html

You'd have to deal with mounting, but I bet the type 101 heat exchanger would fit nicely between the crash bar and the bottom frame. I wonder sometimes of that's what I should have done instead of my FMIC, but I'm not willing to shell out the time, effort, and money to switch to an AWIC.

Have you done much research on this?

Would it just require a water style intercooler and a way to pump and cool the water to the intercooler?

Did you by any chance price this out against the FMIC?

    I am intrigued for sure.

  7. What the easiest fitting (least amount of cutting) FMIC for the 5th gen? I imagine that is a better idea over running a TMIC with corn...?

Is there a timing belt kit for our cars or is it only OEM? I have seen only a couple kits, but they are from brands I'm not familiar with.

Does anyone make an engine seal kit or is that just a dealer option as well?

  8. WTF right? The bolt wasn't in straight either (not that I would expect any less at this point) and was a battle with a breaker bar to get it out that far. I'm glad I found these issues the way I did and not after the timing belt messed up again and took out my valves or something expensive.

This is the exact kind of thing that makes me not trust anyone else's automotive work.

I did find that the #4 cyl was my issue and the wrist pin was really bad. Lots of play and noise when shaking the crank back and fourth. You could feel/see the movement in the piston... the pin is toast.

  9. I found more interesting garbage from the last "mechanic"... it seems he/she couldn't figure out what to do after stripping the threads for the timing belt adjuster, so they took out the slip bushing/sleeve and rammed a sweet and huge Home Depot coarse threaded bolt through the adjuster instead. The bolt was in so far that it indented in the block behind it.

There was an awesome custom made brass washer they threw in for the hell of it too.

  10. Thanks for the link foxrider28! That looks nasty with that pivot ball breaking through that fork!

Did you use the stock throw out bearing with the Southbend clutch or use the TSK3 kit?

I got the heads torn down on my engine today. The Sti cams look good and drop right in. I will take side by side pics when I go back to put it back together.

I picked up some cam tools and the intake cam tool fit fine, but the exhaust cam tool was listed for a 5th gen, but I assume was actually for a 4th gen. We ended up holding the exhaust cam with some large channel locks and it worked great... much cheaper too.

The heads go off to the machine shop Monday.
