  1. Whilr waiting for the heads I am installing oil pressure and temp gauge in the cubby, any thoughts on where to pass through firewall? Interweb isn't producing much.
  2. Did anybody using a cubby pod have any luck wiring gauges to the clock harness? I have just a clock no MPG readout. 08 Outback. Looks like the wires are there ACC , constant pwr and ground. Not sure about dimmer. Also what hole did You exit to the engine compartment?
  3. I use Chemtrol or Lucas once a year so if the gasket kit came with O-rings I may do one of the D I Y injector clean tricks if not I will leave them alone.
  4. What about the fuel injectors? new? send off for a clean? Just leave them alone?
  5. O.K. time for assembly to begin. Should have the heads back this upcoming week.
  6. What about the cam and crank position sensors and knock sensor did You Guys get new ?
  7. The contents of My gasket kit have a lot of the copper crush washers included. I am not sure yet what the " half moon " gasket is. Mine is for 2008 turbo motor. I will use the Subaru HG , 1st ones lasted until now. My issue is finding 2 of the hoses. One is the block to PCV valve assemby. The other one appears to be a cooling line from block to the head crossover.
  8. I see the full gasket kit from Subaru now has MLS head gaskets. I thought about the six star gaskets but maybe Subaru has upped their game here?
  9. Managed to get the crank pulley off , I had to get pretty rough with it.
  10. The heatshields that curve around the exhaust manifold flanges fell off. The shield that runs under the front by the oil filter is intact so the decision is made.
  11. I think that is the way to go, I never get caught in a traffic jam so long idle not an issue. Still gotta get the stupid crank pulley off.
  12. OK engine out. Still have to get crank pulley off. Intake, VF-46 and TGV's off. Time to get some minor stuff off and address exhaust manifolds. The heat shield bolts are stewing in PB blaster. Anybody have any thoughts on re-using/replacing heat shields or going without?
  13. I did get all 4 cam gear bolts loose I have a Perrin crank pulley so no holes to work with.
  14. So I guess the plan is pull the motor. Mount it to the engine stand. Drill 2 holes on a piece of angle iron to bolt to the flywheel end of the crank . Wedge the iron into the engine stand brackets so the crank can't move at all and get after it.
  15. O.K. started engine removal. Decided to loosen a few hard ones while I can still put car in gear and use brakes. I cannot get the Perrin crank pulley off. 4th gear, standing on brakes, 3 ft long breaker bar and it won't budge. I am stumped. I got 3 of the 4 10 mm hex head cam bolts out. Last on the belt is slipping teeth so I stopped so I don't whack a valve.
  16. Big Thanks to Steve in sales at subaru parts online. I ordered a shortblock and the shipping company obviously dropped it damaging the block in several mating surfaces and possibly the crank snout. Steve saw My pics of the box and damage , filed a claim with shipping company and shipped Me a replacement all in 4 days. I am going to get all My Subaru parts from Them now. Plus My local dealer wanted 350$ more for the shortblock so it was cheaper to have it shipped to Me. Figure that one out.
  17. Subarupartsonline.com was cheaper shipped than any dealership within 100 miles for pick-up.
  18. So delivered today, Grimmspeed TMIC , Subaru gasket kit,oil cooler, STI oil pump and some ACC belts. Then the big item, the short block which had obviously been dropped. 3 of the 4 head locating dowels are smashed, there are numerous dents and chips near the head/block mating surfaces and it looks like the crank snout took a hit. Yay Me. The wood support boards that the block was strapped to are in splinters. Contacted Subaru online parts and sent pictures and waiting to hear what will happen. The crank snout has Me worrid about main bearing damage.
  19. Oil pan is still black everywhere. I don't think this car ever saw snow/salt until I got it in 2017. Right after I got it and took it to dealer for the airbag swap. When I went to pick it up the car was up in the air with 5 Subaru techs looking at it, I thought "uh oh" They found something I missed. The service manager came over and said "We haven't seen one this old with no rust on the underside before"
  20. I will look into the studs. Got the Aisin timing kit with water pump the KillerBee pick-up and windage tray and an oil pressure gauge delivered today. I also got info that the shortblock etc will show Sunday FedEx. I ordered the cyl. #4 extra cooling line as well. My Wife just realized I am spending more on a rebuild than the car is worth and just shook Her head.
  21. Ok now have Grimmspeed TMIC , AOS and EBCS on the way. Still trying to figure out a clutch and trying to decide on head bolts. Seems like re-using originals is not out of the question.
  22. OK sweet Thanks that helps alot. So for Your clutch You went Spec2 + and an OEM flywheel or did I misread that?
  23. In reading engine removal off the Subaru manual it has evacuating the A/C. Is there some way to un-bolt the compressor and put it out of the way instead of a total evac?
  24. OK looks like I have the correct oil cooler on the way. I have an '08 OBXT as far as clutch goes. The choices are tough to wade through but working on it. I plan on E-tune from Cryo, Dave did the original tune when I upgraded to a Grimmspeed catted DP.
