  1. I ordered 86281AG12A 2007 subaru legacy "display ay" for gps/navigation. I received an info center.. a used one.. for 3x the price of it new...... they refuse to do anything about it. I hate that I ever tried this project..
  2. ARGH! so my part arrives that I've been waiting on since the 9th and its wrong! and they wont take it back or fix it. I'm just SOL.. I give up.. I have 2 Xenarc 700 TSV LCD screens (just the screen and power supply) would anyone be interested in something like that? I'm thinking about throwing them up on ebay or something
  3. aww but I'm SO LAZY! I want the information to come to me!! Thanks. I will check it out. I met a guy last year that was going to use a CF to IDE converter for his carputer project. He said he boots slower, but since theres no moving parts its more heat/car tolerant. It may be something worth considering.
  4. this may have been addressed int he last 29 pages, but when I had my carpc I was using a 2.5" notebook harddrive.. has anyone here tried a flash drive/ide converter and booted from that? I killed 2 HDDs in my carputer in a year. I think the rotating mass worked against it even tho the harddrive and the case were shock mounted.
  5. they are working on an itunes wrapper for roadrunner from what I read (FWIW in retrospect.) I agree with you I had a lot of difficulty with ease of use using roadrunner and winamp's cumbersome interface. It took a lot of effort to play things. I like being able to sort by genre and "play all." in all honesty, I like the factory systems better by a long shot because of this. But since I have an 05 its get a new car, do a carputer, or STFU.. and I just cant seem to keep my mouth closed. I have thought many days that this is not a worthy project. Spend thousands upon thousands for a map with a "you are here" feature, an item which can be bought at the store for a few hundred bucks. Then use an mp3 interface when I already have an ipod. This is one of the reasons I took my system out and the biggest reasons I have hesitated to put one back in. Something about factory integration however always gets me.. its something I cant understand. Its like subaru is telling me factory nav is something I cant have and I'm determined to tell them to kiss my ass. I would be interested if my 2nd revision was further along or if I had more conviction in the project, but at this time, I'll just wait and see what you have for sale and go "hrmm.. thats a good price, too bad I'm not in the market"
  6. yes, we were trying to make a factory fit "kit" that we could sell to users that would allow them to put in a xenarc 700tsv (this was before the daylight readable came out.) and use the factory button holes in the factory nav bezel for usb ports. We had a working usb prototype, I still have it in my garage. We also had a screen mount prototype, but it didnt work due to a fundamental design flaw. We were looking at this from the wrong angle. We quit because it wound up costing us too much for still no product. No one seemed interested in the project enough to help fund it. After I destroyed the 2nd $400 screen, I decided to call it quits. I took my entire carputer project apart and sold the unit itself. I cut up the main power line in the car, pulled it out of the firewall, the only thing left in the car is the vga cable and usb cables. Thats cos they're under the rear seat and I dont want to take it out again.
  7. I dunno I'm in the middle of what may be a salvage yard scam. I'll look into that if/when my parts come in. When we were testing our original factory bezel mount "phase II" project we wound up bridging some points and it went out. I didnt look very hard to find out what it was, that's when I gave up. Before that I cracked like 3 touchscreens and burnt a controller. Apparently if you emulate a touch in 100 places at once, the touch controller starts to melt the solder points.
  8. I have 2 broken xenarc 700TSVs.. one with a 5 wire touch and one with a 4 wire. IIRC.. I may have sold them, I dont remember. Would you be able to do anything with that? the LCD panel itself is about the only thing good on both of these.. and the backlight. maybe the touch controllers.
  9. Yes, if you compare the extender harness to the oem harness it becomes very evident which pins are missing. As far as filling the gap so to speak, that's a bit more difficult. Seems most people have cut the factory harness, but I wouldn't go that route unless I had to.
  10. well, I would be more interested if "nickel sulfate" hadn't broken my window yesterday. If I see that guy I'm gonna beat his ass j/k.. no seriously I think I'm done modding this car.. I have too many problems with it to bother modding it anymore. Maybe if I can have more than 2 months w/o forking out $100-$1000 in failing parts and broken stuff I can think again on this.
  11. That is a better price on a TF 7" lilput over what mp3car uses. What are the differences? I think mp3car sells theirs for like $730. Its steep but I've been saying if I go into this ridiculous project again (which after my leper of a car broke its own window yesterday seems HIGHLY unlikely) I would do transreflective or I wouldn't do the project at all. figurativley speaking, I am sick to vomiting of using crapass non-visible screens.
  12. you find the part we're looking for let us know
  13. subarus dont go to junkyards no really, I have NEVER seen a subaru newer than early 90s in a junkyard here. Theyre pretty rare as it is in the south, much less finding one thats sitting AND is sitting with a navi unit.
  14. ORLY? you mean the screen internals right? cos the housing is all I want. I dont really care what language its in, I wont be using it heh, I am trying to find a broken one or something really. I think think the cheapest I've seen the screen assembly NEW is in the high 700s. If I could get one down in the 500s we might already have one. I dunno tho, we still have some testing to do before I blow any dough. but I will let you know if we decide to go that route. My idea is basically to take a factory navi screen housing with the button interface on the bottom and the lights and whatnot, gut it of its factory screen interface and put in an aftermarket screen as "best fit" as we can. then make some sort of COM software to wrap the buttons to RR functions. The factory nav from my understanding does not actually TOUCH the factory trim bezel, so a touchscreen that is slightly too large will not be a problem.. this is what I ran into last time when trying to use the factory bezel.
  15. interesting.. if you find a location to receive the screen at a severe discount let me know. I want to take a different angle on things and need it a LOT cheaper than the $900 retail on the screen unit. I want the button assembly and the screen housing/mounting bracket.
  16. I did something similar to that. I actually tapped off the wires that ran to the stock cig lighter and put a new one in the glovebox. Then routed the screen plug into that spot. It works well but a word to the wise, if you ever put the stock one back in with this setup DO NOT use both at the same time.. even to light a cigarette (not that any of us smoke in our cars right?) or it will blow the fuse. When I got this car I was irritated that the cig lighters were ignition switched.. but during the carputer project I thanked the engineers at subaru many times.. it was a ready made accessory tap! Now I use my glovebox cig lighter for my radar detector. I didnt like having to relocate the info center. That's a deal breaker for me if I choose to do this again. It was in a bad spot, hard to see in some lights, and it took out an emergency storage bin!
  17. wow... I'm glad you think of this as a hobby, cos you're in up to your chin on that one I guess I cant say anything.. we've been passivley working on a similar project for about 6 months now but dont have a whole lot to show for it. Then again I haven't spent any money so thats always good. lookin forward to pics of this
  18. so thats where fairburn is apparently driving is difficult there as I often hear about it on "wreck radio" in the mornings. I attributed it to fairburn road in Douglasville, which is a bit of a slum, I figured if you drove south long enough on fairburn road you wound up in fairburn. you should go check out.... uh.. well no nothing really to see in this city. Its a working city not a tourist attraction. if you haven't been to a 5 guys however I suggest you try it, its good stuff. might also try "folks" its a cracker barrel type thing. Its real good. Find yourself a restaurant that serves fried dill pickles and fried green tomatoes also. I dunno, other than eating and the aquarium I dont think theres any attractions around here
  19. wont bump into me then... or at least it will be very unlikely. yea.. the last time we had a legacy ride n grill I lost my job.. hopefully if you decide to have another it wont happen again and I will be able to go.
  20. I hope not.. a wreck in bumper to bumper traffic causes major delays. srsly tho, what area of ATL will you be in?
  21. this was a silver LGT sedan with tinted windows. Driver was a white guy in his 20s/30s. Guy did not have DRLs turned off (wasting precious bulb life!) when I drove by he leaned over as if to see if that was an LGT that passed him. I was making a left turn to drop off my drycleaning. You would know what the east/west conn. was if you were on it It runs from Smyrna to Powder Springs.
  22. anybody silver tinted and was on east west conn. this afternoon? I SAW YOU LOOKIN AT MY FILTHY CAR!
  23. dont pm me.. I havent read this thread in MONTHS! ok, read up a bit now.. looks like there's a lot of good work going on. I cant say I want to get back into it... but I do.. I probablly wont though.. my last thought was making something easily removeable with a screen mount and a laptop for gps or something.
  24. [ame=http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=enigma,+ga&ie=UTF8&ll=31.415553,-83.326664&spn=0.012782,0.020084&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr]enigma, ga - Google Maps[/ame] nothing apparently.
  25. comin down 75? if you have time to stop over in ATL you can always see the "sites" I guess. the varsity, the aquarium , whatever else ATL has.. honestly I never go into the city. I hear the vortex has good burgers, and the "flying biscuit" has.. well.. biscuits.. (I dont think they fly though) it looks like 75 takes you past macon towards perry, I THINK theres a restaurant in that area called "the depot" that has good cheese biscuits. It may have been in Madison. I dont really remember now its been years. perry appears to be a small town with a highway running through it, so.. +1 on what was said above, watch your speed. Ticket revenue feeds families in small towns
