  1. theres a lot of problems with mounting screen behind the oem nav bezel. I have one sitting in my home office along with a bunch of screens and screen parts. In the garage I have the center stack support that you see behind the radio when you take it out. The oem navigation screen does not actually mount to the navi bezel, it mounts to the center stack suppoirt and the bezel just trims it out. you can easily buy a 7" screen and fab up mounts for yourself, if you can get the distance correct and figure out what to do with the button hole. the problem you run into is most 7" screens are taller than the opening. The opening is something like 6.5x3.75 where most screens are 6.5x4. You may think thats just a tiny difference, and really it is, but if you are using a touchscreen you have a bigger issue in that you cant let the bezel touch the screen or get near toucing the screen or you risk blowing a fuse or burning out the controller. You also have the issue of what to do abou tthe info center.. I have been working on this off and on for about 2.5 years. Its been mostly off but we have a few items in the mix that may help builders who want screens using the oem bezel. If we get farther along I'll start a thread on our findings. We wont be making something to sell, we'll just provide all the information and resources you need to have it done. interesting that subaruparts.com has that part specifically listed. It tells me a lot of people want that part.
  2. wait, you bought a screen mounting bracket for the oem navi bezel from subaruparts.com? Part number???? I must have it!
  3. that's been covered in another thread but its very similar to what highline is doing, maybe even done by him? I dont recall. Sebbery's work is good on this screen, I've tried working with the cubby and its not easy to make it look good. Other than the color Sebbery's looks very good. that being said, it not looking stock is the exact reason I scrapped my cubby pocket screen project. this is of course a very long winded commentary version of SUBSCRIBE.
  4. hey thats cool.. all my phone can do via bluetooth is make a connection..
  5. asus.com? heh I cant figure out how big that thing is.. are those usb ports at the bottom?
  6. my carputer sat on top of the spare tire in a wooden platform I made to match the oem foam piece. I had some lockups that I thought were heat related so I put in larger fans, however the lockups were later found ot be a driver problem with my gps antenna. (it was the gps software that was locking up.) I thought about cutting louvers into the trunk floor and putting fans in to circulate air into the spare tire well but I never bothered. I believe dynamat extreme or any kind of aluminum sided insulaton would have some heat rejection properties however if you're really worried about it. I think next time I'm going to try to fit my carputer under the passenger seat or even in the glovebox.... if I do anything.. I dont want to revisit the trunk again, its too involved imo.
  7. heh, I have a usb extender cable that runs from my front seat to the trunk for my gps anennta that is still in the car. It doesn't do anything but if I go on a trip I can easily hook it up to my laptop. We actually drew up a working prototype usb extender device that would sit under a screen in the factory nav. bezel. I have it at my house somewhere. It has leds on it and all to light up at night and everything. We have to re-tool it to make it fit however.
  8. college park? uh.. no thanks.. lol I dunno, I've found the more people you get involved the harder it is to find a time/place/date/activity that suits everyone. My car is filthy, it has been since I moved here.. damn water ban.. its certainly not ready for any pictures to be taken of it. In fact I'm not sure but it looks like a cat may have fallen off the hood when the car was wet as there are 2 clean sliding marks on the front.
  9. looks good. Believe it or not I'm still fanatical about using the oem bezel. some new info we found in the last year or so has been very beneficial in that and has lead me to believe we can still make it work, but that's still a while off. Stil dunno what to do about the oem button hole. I'd really like to get oem button assemblies and put them in with a serial interface and map theirt function to the carputer but.. that may be way more costly than is reasonable.. I guess the backup is just a usb hub like we had originally planned.
  10. it will work on all the 05-09 (to my knowledge) legacies. The 06+ will have reduced functionality because of things subaru took out of the info center interface such as the interior light brightness override and airbag lights. The info center data will still be accessible by the carputer. If you could find a way to get the air bag lights from the ceiling panel and connect them to the device theoretically it would still function. When you turn your headights on this device will also be able to know this and switch to your night skin if you want it to. I actually found out about the deleted features in the 06+ by a mistake from a salvage yard vendor. He was supposed to send me a navigation screen and the jerk sent me an 06+ info center.. oh well. it gave us something to play with at least.. and the harness was there so we got to see what pins were missing.
  11. I'll have to get with sirhecubus more on this cos tbh its been kind of his pet project for my carputer. Basically my goal for this thing was to eliminate the info center from the car and integrate it into the carputer roadrunner system. Everything the 05 info center does will be displayed on the carputer if we can get away with it. Sirhecubus actually made a demo program in VB that looks nearly identical to the info center and will run in windows. He is still trying to work out the details of how to parse the data the info center is being fed by the gauge cluster, but we were able to interact with my car through serial. it was cool. As far as ODBII stuff.. I haven't really looked into that so a/f and all that wont be available with this device.. sorry.. More to come however.. I think hes going to draw up a PCB plan and then we'll be able to get more idea on what it will cost to have a few of them made.. we could do a group buy or whatever if theres enough interest. I dont think they'll be terribly expensive.
  12. so.. we did it.. my friend and I last weekend sat in my car with a rigged up interface device and we were able to interface the computer directly to the car. We could override the interior light dim, pull info center data (all be it still raw data so far) check air bag on/off status and override the airbag light all from a serial connection to a PC. We want to draw up some boards for everyone.. I think he may post more detail on this later.. would any of yall be interested in this? We will publish everything you need for free but we want to have a bunch of boards.. maybe 10.. drawn up so that we can cut our costs. All you would really pay for is the cost of producing the board itself.. The basic project is an info center wire harness to serial interface and software that will address the data and then software to pull said data into your roadrunner skin pages.
  13. I place mine in the rear window as I've always done. I drilled a small half circle in the 3rd brake light cover and the wire runs out of that through holes in the body panel into the trunk. I have been using a microsoft gps antenna, however it cannot take the heat of being located back there and it dies after being there for a month or 2. One of these days i'm going to buy a nicer antenna. I'd show you a pic but my website went down a long time ago. I found out my host did not provide whois protection and when they refused, I told them to shove it.
  14. mp3car has some kind of wing antenna thats bmw style. I dont know much about it though. I'd just assume keep all my antennas in the car. I dont have the luxury of a hatch door to run wires through and I am sure as hell not drilling.
  15. love the hinge mounted assembly.
  16. found it, I pm'd him, hopefully he'll reply. Thats what we were doing and we already have software we just need to mate his data with a laptop. We have also examined inserting this data into roadrunner so you will be able to raw call info center data directly into roadrunner through this program with a serial port connection to the info center harness... no info center at all needed.. thats our goal. Slow in coming, but I'll keep you informed.
  17. well, stay tuned economy allowing we plan to do some research on that. We will publish whatever we find out.
  18. yea, the bezel and the info center is the deal breaker for me. I have a lot of data and ideas on that end of the project but cant use any of them due to financial limitations.. unless I can 'rent" someones oem gps screen to take measurements on it and fab up a facsimile. We had some great data on the info center, but it was theoretical data, but the other day we realized that we may have been wrong. Remember.. your info center remembers the last data set you fed it before you turned the car off.
  19. sure sounds like it. I mean obviously be aware of potential scams and info he may not be telling you but, we are in a rather niche market in regards to carputers. Not many people look for them and it drives the resale value down for good components. I lost my ass on mine. I paid $700 or so for it and wound up letting it go for $325. Still tho it was cool to meet someone in person who was interested in starting the project I was putting on hold/scrapping. I met him at the Varisty downtown over an overpriced burger and some rather tasty fries.
  20. I'd say so. I sold a similar system for a similar price. Mine had xp pro on it tho but without a CD... and no CDrom. and no screen either. hrmm...
  21. blew the motor? when you reach redline.. dont just hold it there.. SHIFT! srsly tho, that sucks, but at least it gives you an excuse to go all out. yall hear about the recycling center on satellite this morning? Isnt it ironic for a recycling center to burn..
  22. user: 05limited car: 06 specB sorry, just noticed that. Gwinnett is a nice area.
  23. I dont have any credit cards. I feel with the current political climate its "safer" generally to do everything with cash. I have no debt except my car payment (which I'm feverishly trying to pay off) and my mortgage. If the banks fail they cant take away what I rightfully own. crazy paranoia aside, you cant stop payment on a debit card. I already tried. I did however change my card so at least he cant take any more money. Yes, I was still on the crazy idea of having an oem screen retrofit. My idea was to buy a damaged screen or salvage yard working oem screen (thus the part number mentioned earlier) remove the screen and internals except the oem lighted buttons, put my own screen in the housing, and use a serial cable and simple button wrapping application to assign functions to the buttons much like the oem system. So when you push map it goes to the gps system, you push dest. it opens an "enter destination" field. Since this is expensive I was not interested in selling it as a kit anymore, but rather making a how-to type thing for the users of the forum to do it themselves if they so wish. Including all vendors etc. and any software we have to create free for download. A friend of mine is working on something that I think would really fix this info center thing permanently for all LGT carpc guys. Hes still motivated but it has cost him very little as hes providing the know how and tools (electrical engineering is a complete mystery to me... I'm a computer guy.) I have been providing the test vehicle and any components necessary outside of tools. I've spent over $5k on this project in the last 3-4 years. I could have bought a ton of nuvis that do the same thing by now.
  24. when I say screens, see attached by what I mean.. literally, screens and power supplies both of them are Xenarc 700TSV LCD screen and back light assemblies with power supplies. They have the ribbon cables (or one of them does.) Both screens themselves are assumed to be operational. the touchscreen overlay that is good is visible. It is a 4 wire resistive from a 700tsv. The controller board on the left is for a 4 wire TSV, there is a burned trace on the board, we had a wire soldered in to bypass it but the wire came loose so it doesn't work anymore. Its pretty obvious which wire it is. Bottom right is the plastic housing for a 5 wire 700TSV. The 4 wire has different switches so it will not work with this. These are all the parts I have here with me. I don't know where the others are. I've moved 2 times in as many years. the other attached pic is the crap I got when I attempted to order 86281AG12A. Do NOT EVER go with "Thoroughbread Auto Parts." They screw you over with this kind of garbage and then refuse to hold up their end of the deal on technicalities. I have not pursued the issue with them because I don't want to deal with the owner bitching me out like most other people who have filed complaints about the company on ripoff report have attested to. I didnt pay this guy to send me the wrong part and obscenities. I'm not officially selling anything yet, but if you're interested in either of these things feel free to contact me. I'm really irritated about this whole ordeal. I just need to cut my losses and tell carputers to f*ck off. This has been the single largest waste of money of a project I have ever taken on. I should be embarrassed. All so I can have a map tell me where I am.. geez..
