  1. First pic is the main drive (the one up to my building) in the fall. Second pic has the cornfields.
  2. Pretty sure I win... there are literal cornfields down the hill from the front door to the building where I have my office.
  3. I read that the biggest reason for the shortages was packaging. Apparently beer was a big one. Everyone stopped drinking from kegs at bars and started getting six-packs of cans, and that resulted in major can shortages. Same thing happened to various non-perishable staples, cleaning products, etc.
  4. Hey, it's Subaru... this is progress! They're not a decade behind anymore!
  5. I use it for cat pee. One of our cats likes peeing on random shit, and if it were up to me he would have been gone years ago, but he's my wife's favorite.
  6. I thought the gardener lived in the carriage house, with the butler?
  7. It's under "digital wellbeing" on my green-text machine. Not sure where it might be located on overpriced FruitDevices.
  8. You work for MS? I just disable all that shit on Win10. Cortana, MS accounts (I only use local accounts, and jump through the hoops to do that on newer builds), ad tracking, speech tracking, location history, etc. The only thing I leave on in the OOBE is location access. Not that it does me much good when I just open Chrome and use that... [emoji38] Especially when I use it to navigate to Facebook... I have actually set a timer on the Facebook app on my phone. Didn't like how much time I was spending on it, so it cuts me off at 90 minutes per day.
  9. Honestly, the issue is that for most technical endeavors, startup costs are such that you can't easily get new competitors. In the days of Standard Oil, anyone could strike an oil well, pay the railroads to ship the oil, and make a profit. How are you going to develop a new smartphone OS at this point? Multiple established companies with expertise in the field have tried and failed. I'm sure it's theoretically possible... but you're not going to do it just by promising you'll only take 10% of the cut for paid apps. We need new antitrust laws for the digital age.
  10. Fixt. Or... If two companies control 99% of the market, and have either colluded to charge similar amounts for developers to use their platform, or have just happened to have decided to charge almost identical amounts, that's anticompetitive. Note that Google and Apple can do whatever the eff they want with their own apps, but third parties have to pay them 30% any time they take payments for anything, and there's no way to get around it.
  11. Are we still talking about adult toys and porn sites?
  12. Joe's Garage? That's a weird-ass name for a porn site...
  13. You probably do have piedmont. It's the part between coastal plains and mountains. Actually, do you even have mountains? Driving through on I-84, I certainly didn't see any runaway truck ramps. [emoji38]
  14. So basically, you go from AC to AC. Gotcha. I actually do shit outside occasionally. It sucks in the summer in MD, but it's not bad from late September to mid-May. Actually, this week has been pretty amazing so far. It's the only place in the US (besides neighboring Virginia) where you have the coast, a major estuary, the coastal plains, the piedmont, mountains, and a continental divide in the same state. And only a couple others have all of those things minus the estuary (North Carolina and Georgia are the only other ones with the Eastern Continental Divide, and New York has small bits of the St. Lawrence Divide). They do, in southern Idaho. Keep in mind that the southern border of Idaho is less than an hour and a half from the Mormon Temple in downtown SLC, and only a bit more than half an hour from downtown Logan, UT. IIRC there are a couple of fundamentalist sects in ID too. Oh, and... U da ho!
  15. I mean, so do I. If it was a choice between Florida or California, I'd take Cali in a heartbeat. Still really want to move out to the Rockies someday, though. I really enjoyed my year in Salt Lake City, and I hear life along the Front Range and in some parts of NM is nice.
  16. I mean, one of these things is not a problem for me.
  17. That's pretty much what I said when I visited friends in SF in 2015. Like, wow, incredibly beautiful area, and the weather is 70 and sunny for like 3/4 of the year. But damn, there are so many reasons I would not want to live there. Cost, crowding, wildfires, earthquakes, CARB, the smog that made CARB necessary, droughts, mudslides, COVID spikes...
  18. It's ventilated, not cooled. No AC involved -- it just takes the ambient air and blows it up your ass.
