My Japanese 2.0GT BP5, let modding commence.

Recommended Posts

Fully stock BP5, 2.0GT Legacy.

So the wife reversed into our neighbors wall, caused a nice dent to the rear bumper.

Also mashed the exhaust into the rear bumper. The other side's exhaust was slightly damaged from the last owner (bought the car used)

Bumper is currently touching the exhaust.

Wife very upset, so she gave me some money to play with to "fix" the car.

Also, the rear door has a dent made from an unknown source (prolly by some guy who slammed into me whilst I was eating ramen)

--------------------------

Bought (not installed, yet!);

Mid-pipe / down-pipe (Apexi N1)

new set of 215/45r17 Hankook Evo K110 tyres (to replace Yokohama DNA Ecos)

Dixcel brake rotors (ones on are probably still stock)

Weds Racing "prime" brake pads. 0-400 (or was it 500?), low dust

Used rear bumper (to replace the dented thing)

Accessport v1

Done;

Cusco Tower bar over the engine / front

Adjustable Number Plate

I ultimately want it to ride very smooth (not too stiff), with plenty of pep.

Looking at;

Coil-over set

- not too stiff, Im thinking the stock struts / springs are getting a little clunky (currently car is at 70-80,000 km on the clock. Tein? Koni?

Stabilizer bars (sway bars), with endlinks, brakets

- would be nice, but Id have to set back, uhm, around.. uh. a good 500 dollars at least? Looking around this site gives me evidence to go change coil-overs before I touch these.

Bushings

- Right now, unsure of what bits need changing. Which bushings usually are tired at a 80,000km car? Lower arm?

Sports Intake Hose

- Quite cheap, silicone hose. . . 100 bucks, is it worth it?

Apexi Active Silencer

- Unsure as of yet how loud the bought exhausts will be. Once theyre installed, Ill decide if a silencer is worth buying.

Steel brake Lines

- Only real of use on the circuit?

ECU tuning

- Dont think the Cobbs Accessport works with the type A BP5 as it doesnt have the ODB port, or something. Found one over here called a "Provac accessport" or something similar, was going for under 500 dollars.

Backing Camera

- So my wife doesn't screw up the parking again. I think these things are going fairly cheap on EBay/ auction sites. Only thing Id have to do is make some kinda "molex" connector to short something out?

Come Thursday, all the parts Ive already bought will be installed by the local garage. I'll take some pictures and up them once done.

Also, Im unsure if the US Legacy parts are similar to the Japanese ones (engine sizes are different etc), so its not an easy research mission for me ;/

I don't want the ride to be harsh at all, that is the main issue for me. (and will keep a wife happy)

If possible, any pointers to what is worth doing, in an order of impact/ importance?

In order of importance:

1. Don't let your wife drive your car again

2. Don't let your wife drive your car again

3. Coil overs a bit OTT? unless you can a. get them cheap in Japan and b. you're going to the track or c. you're rich and money is no object

4. See item #1

Nice reply,

But to be honest, if shes paying for a sports muffler / repairs, I'm a happy camper!

I remember scraping the side of my Golf when I started driving- its a learning experience, one never to repeat again (tired after a long journey, hitting the wall whilst parking)

Coil overs Over-the-top? Not really. Sometimes I feel a slight clunk on the accelerator pedal from the suspension. Wouldnt mind cleaning up the clunks to make a nicer, uh, ride.

The Prova Accessport is just a rebranded Cobb Accessport with Japanese specific maps (for cars running in Japan on Japanese fuel). I would check with the shops what base maps are available. Glad to hear that these have come down in price, they listed for much more than that when they first came out.

@ Darryn, thanks for posting,

I was actually checking through Yahoo Auctions (Japan = no ebay), and thought the Prova (thankyou) Accessport (1 & 2) look like a spitting image of the Cobbs Accessport.

So if they're rebranded, that means that the information I got earlier, that my car cannot plug into the Cobbs accessport is false, correct? (ie, my 2003 BP5 doesn't have the correct port for the Accessport).

The description attached to the auction stated that types A-F (I think) are fine, so my car = OK! Hopefully.

Would be nice if I could get some information on the coil-overs.

I was looking at the Tein coil-overs, they seem quite cheap- but I'm unsure of if they'd give me a worse ride than my current stock setup (with 70000km-ish on the clock)

Update; mechanic just gave me a call, looks like he can't work tomorrow, so I need to wait until Monday :-( Not the best news as its been raining all the past week and Ive had to ride my motorbike to school.

@ bigBADbenny, may have to wait on the shocks, maybe til just after summer. Budget problems ;) How does the HKS suspension compare to Tein, or the much-talked-about Koni?

HKS Hipermax 3 (discontinued) is going for around 85000 yen (850$), looks in good condition but probably used. Hipermax 4 new at around 150000 yen (1500$) which is in the "cant afford that much" category right now ;(

I know its difficult to "revitalise" the life on the stock strut/ springs, but could I replace any bushings, bearings, etc to help them do their job?

!

Just thought, may be best to get a down-pipe if Im having the mechanic change the exhaust.

q. Will American 2.5GT down-pipes fit the Japanese 2.0GT?

q. Will the US up-pipes also be cross-compatible with the Japanese 2.0GT?

q. Will a new turbo inlet hose (after-market) make much of a difference to the power of the car?

Only reason Im asking about exhaust parts is because theyre REALLY difficult to find out here. (Up & Down)

All three questions answer is NO...

I suggest you to go "Book Off" and buy old Club Legacy magazines and learn from it.

Also good place to get useful information.

Good luck;)

All three, "no" thanks for that ;>

You don't have to be rude about it though, I can't read Japanese! That's one of the main reasons I'm posting and doing most of my research on the internet via international sites!

One more doozy

q. The wrx/sti uppipe fits the US 2.5 fine. Is there a Japanese equivalent?

HKS: can be serviced at a Tein service center AFAIK... (at least in Aus)

Best to find what Subaru models and parts are compatible with your 2.0GT, e.g. GC8 / twinscroll etc.

Anything can be had on Yahoo.jp at a great price but you'll need to be really good with creative reverse searching and google translate.

PM'd you some links that might help too ;)

Let me know if you need a hand once you have an idea of compatibility, its the gateway to using the right keywords.

@ bigBADbenny; thanks for the links earlier. I check out Yahoo Auctions regularly for bits and bobs.

I added a number plate adjuster and some newer photos to [ame=http://www.flickr.com/photos/95286937@N06/sets/72157634320518884/]Car, June 2013 - a set on Flickr[/ame]

q. Which reverse cameras are compatible with the D155 unit? Can I get anything from auction and plug it straight in to the D155?

Bought the AP, 400$!

Currently looking at these

Final Konnexion Phantom Limited / 65000 yen

http://www.finalkonnexion.co.jp/img/phantom001.jpg

F:7kg, R:7kg. fully adjustable, Front has a pillowball mount, rear rigid.

I'm guessing that these will be more comfortable than these @

Final Konnexion Cobra / 75000yen

http://www.finalkonnexion.co.jp/img/cobra03.jpg

Same set but with pillowball mounts on both front and rear.

Itd be either these, or Blitz ZZ-Rs, but theyre a tad more expensive, which I cant afford right now ;/ (99000yen)

...

the garage repairing the car found out that under the rear bumper, the braces are also dented. Will take a bit more time, but I think he has it under control. ffaaaaackkk (hope this isnt gonna cost much more!)

Good choice of motor  - some more JDM Legacy enthusiasts at http://www.uklegacy.com/forums and http://forum.liberty.asn.au/index.php (bigBADbennys home ;) ) - but probably most of them are on here too... ;)

I was fortunate when I bought mine - the previous owner was formerly a VW Golf enthusiast and had done the full sports exhaust including cats and BC coilover suspension :spin:

Interested to see how yours develops :)

Got my car back from the garage today.

Wife's not too pleased about exhaust noise, so if anyone's up for it, lets talk, silencers!

Currently looking at cheap silencers and the apexi active silencer.

q. Which would quieten the car better?

Thats pretty much it, I guess.

Will upload some photos tomorrow once I finish work. Got the car back at night so, its dark.

Lived in Kirkham myself for a couple of years... Now in Lytham St Annes

Small world thats for sure! I actually worked at the Axa in Lytham for a while, then ran off to finish a degree at Uclan. Quite a useless degree but it helped me get over and plant a job in Japan. Unrelated to my course, of course!

I flashed the ECU with the accessport, but I was completely surprised to see only ONE basemap on the AP. The thing has a one week guarantee, so I can still take it back, Im guessing I could install more if I

- 1/ had a PC with a 9 pin serial port

- 2/ had a little more time to play around with it.

Kinda thinking I should take it back, get my 400$ back, use 200$ for double Apexi active silencers, and then use 200$ towards the suspension system.

Any ideas?
