My 1999 Legacy GT has been covered in plastic !!

Recommended Posts

I did what I did to keep the paint underneath from fading further, these are cars that I drive on a (almost) daily basis, while I could shoot them with expensive automotive paint I do not have the time (right now) to keep attending to ....polishing and waxing their paint, easy fix just to plasti dip them, correct term since the product I used is called Plasti Dip, I plan in the future to correctly paint them, but for now my other projects keep me busy, and cars are just my hobby, I own 8 vehicles and used to own 13.

The wagon is called SHOrona (SHO engine, Corona wagon) so it will sport an SHO engine that I plan on Twin Turbo charging, and also plan for it to be Mid-engined.

Again sorry if I offended any purists, I am used to being criticized for doing crazy unusual stuff , I was the first in the world to use a Terminator (03 Cobra) powerplant in a Cobra replica by Factory Five and even Factory Five asked me for some input on the setup for that specific engine fitting their frame, anyways sorry If I made anyone uncomfortable, at

Some point in my life I will stop learning but this is not that stopping point, I am still learning how to pinstripe and metal-forming, welding and painting, rebuilding engines, transmissions, welding and even designing race car frames

And suspensions. It is a lot of fun for

Me and I keep on enjoying. Peace.

It looks like the plasti-dip sprayed on pretty evenly. How many cans did it take you to complete the legacy?

come out evenly considering I used an electric Wagner house sprayer, One can also use an HPLV gun with a tip for shooting primer but since it was my first time plastidiping a whole car I went with the electric sprayer. it took 10 - 14.5 cans of plastidip with 40% reducer. unfortunately in Kali you cannot get gallon sizes, it takes about a gallon to cover a medium car like a Legacy.

Only a gallon? Dipyourcar says 3 gallons. Granted they said 4 spray cans for a set of wheels and I did my 4 wheels in 2. Like 5 coats too.

I plan on dipping my car white this summer. Found a clearance Wagner for cheap at home depot for $20.

I like em, ive seen plastidip cars in person, looks pretty good. Hope to see that Corona done, that's my kind of project. Also like the factory fives, still hope to own one of their vehicles one day.

I love Factory Five and their cars, I have tons of fun building them roadsters, did you know that they have a new car that is going to use a Subaru donor? It is called the 818 and I am hoping to build one sometime. here's a link and they are already taking deposits, it is almost ready for production.

yeah, I only used maybe 1 1/4 gallons on the Legacy , I could have used more on the Mustang but I did not know better since it was the first one.

One suggestion on that Wagner is to not overfill it and also keep the level from running low as it will suck air and splatter dip if it runs low, and if that happens just leave it alone and let it dry like that, once dry you'll barely notice it, but I found out (by trying) that you can actually sand it down (the splatter) with 80 or 100 grit and spray again over the area and it will blend in as it dries.

I bought my Wagner also for 20 bucks from a yard sale, used once. Next time I shoot plasti dip will use a HPLV gun with a tip for shooting primer, I need to see if that is better.

Good luck in your project, would love to see how it turns out.

wow you guys are cracking me up !

the GTR badge, yes I did put that there in the year 2000 ! and it is not because of the Nissan GTR but because it is a Legacy GT and the R is for my first name. Although a good idea for a crazy swap !

the only sticker that the Legacy still wears is this one:

the sticker is getting old. do they have new ones?

Work on my 1970 Nova continues, and I am in fact using Custom Shop's Epoxy Primer to cover the fenders. Don't worry I won't use plastidip to paint this one.

Going with a 2 stage Urethane paint

I personally dig the plasti dipped legacy!! I would like to do my whole car. Stuff is cool if ya don't like it then peel off and you're back to shiny paint.

Is there a specific Wagner sprayer to use to get the even smooth finish? How many coats did you spray?

Again looks sweet man! Those other projects are cool too. I cut my teeth on the classic Chevys and small blocks.

There's a handful that work really well. Most of them are cheap as well. I've heard 5+ coats is what you aim for. If you put it on too thin its really hard to remove.

Ill post up some pics when I dip my 91 SS white.

An HVLP gun will clog up with plastidip. Even with a wide tip it clogs up all the internals. At least the good ones like the accuspray/3M ones.

YMMV
