Chris GTO TT
Nice. I finally bought a new soft top for mine. Hope to get it installed this weekend! 2003 Baja 5MT 2016 Outback 2.5i Premium w/Eyesight
Silinc3r
Here's a couple of cardboard mock ups of the two different radii 180s I've found so far... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0191_zpsogujknfy.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0192_zpswrbr9ctq.jpg The wider fouls on the headlight, the tight one fouls on the throttle linkage... So it's hot side for now. Once the car is running I'll investigate other options. One possibility is cutting the tight radius pipe and welding the leg back on at a slight angle. That particular one is cast, so I need to look into welding cast Al. My TIG skills on Al are rudimentary at best, so I need to practice a bit before I'm ready for that. At least the hood closes on the current setup... Aren't you running megasquirt? Why can't you just stick a low pro filter on the end? Silinc3r
You'll get better throttle response and you can always fab up some sort of heat shield or ram to it. Reduces all the extra crap that will heat up anyways. Just a thought. Driving a Subaru, we already know what the intake temps are driving even desnorkled. You aren't turboed so the the air isn't going to heat up that much unless you are just sitting. Silinc3r's 05 SWP GT/Spec B
rodan
While it seems like an easy solution, there's a few problems... 1. The aluminum tube already contacts the radiator hose, so there's no room for anything but one of the 'mushroom' type foam filters, and I'm not overly fond of those. 2. The hood is vented to extract hot air, and the filter would be directly in the airflow from the heat exchangers (just the radiator for now) up to the vents. 3. Guys that know a lot more about these cars than I ever will have done lots of testing and found that these motors perform best with 19-23" of intake tube before the throttle body. Chris GTO TT
Ha without anything to scale that turbo it could easily have been a Miata sized turbo. 2003 Baja 5MT 2016 Outback 2.5i Premium w/Eyesight
rodan
A few more hours of chasing wires and squinting at wiring diagrams today... The end result is that the wipers and horn now work, and I eliminated the rest of the "goes nowhere" wires. Now I'm starting to tidy things up and get the harness tucked back up where it belongs. It's kind of like trying to re-fold a road map...
rodan
The exhaust showed up! Well, there is some assembly required... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0203_zpsxwyt7xer.jpg I still need to pick a muffler, though. Off the shelf wasn't going to work because of the combination of NB header/downpipe and NA chassis. I figured why pay a premium for something I was going to hack up, so I just decided to scratch build it.
rodan
Started actual work on the exhaust today. First, out with the old... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0205_zpsf0iy6y0s.jpg I believe that was the original muffler, although it looked like the cat section had been bodged before I bodged it again a couple years ago when I put on the eBay header. I had to make a flange to attach to the stock NB2 downpipe... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0207_zpsnblebzfj.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0212_zpsrbkqsko4.jpg I used a 2.25 -> 2.5 adapter to expand to the 2.5" diameter I'm using for the rest of the system. Then I added the cat, and extended the pipe back to the diff... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0217_zps0rsvjia1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0218_zpschzncm93.jpg More to come... need to get the muffler, and figure out what resonator I'm going to use. GipsySpec.B
You don't need no stinkin' muffler. haha, I actually never truly realized how loud my Spec.B was being completely catless and no mufflers until the dude who bought it drove away, that was the moment I'm sure my neighbors all rejoiced. while I cried. Car looks great so far!
Chris GTO TT
Got the top replaced last weekend and then washed it today. Chris GTO TT
Thanks. Only real issue is the way Robbins attaches their glass to the top is different from the other top, so the glass hits the harness bar of my roll hop on its way up. It's easy enough to guide it past the bar but still annoying. 2003 Baja 5MT 2016 Outback 2.5i Premium w/Eyesight
rodan
While I've been working on my TIG skills with aluminum, I didn't quite trust myself to weld the bung for the IAT sensor into the nice, shiny intake tube, so I had a friend do it for me. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0222_zpsuqo1q27t.jpg The exposed wire set just to the right is the pair that will connect to the sensor. Just need to install the connector and loom the wires. I also need to make a bracket to support the intake on the driver's side. That I think I can weld up myself. rodan
The rest of the exhaust arrived... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0223_zpsl126zgj5.jpg I went with a traditional 'turbo' style muffler rather than the newer straight through style in the interests of keeping things quiet. Years ago, I tested the dynomax back to back with flowmasters at the dragstrip (on an 11 sec Mustang), and there was zero difference in performance (but a big difference in noise), so I know these aren't a huge restriction. Since one of our local tracks has a 95db limit, and I plan to take the car to Laguna Seca in the fall (92db limit), I'm willing to sacrifice a couple of HP to keep it quiet. The Vibrant resonator is almost too pretty to hide under the car! Hopefully it will kill some of the 4cyl rasp, and I'll end up with something in the neighborhood of 'classic MG/Alfa' soundwise. We'll see...
GipsySpec.B
I'm going to be doing a custom exhaust on the Mini this spring, where did you get your piping & what not from? I know I can just google it but if you had a good experience with where you got it from I'd give them some more business.
rodan
Got pretty much everything through Summit Racing. Free shipping if over $100, and they take Paypal. I went with mostly mild steel stuff because Arizona, but they have a lot of SS as well. Was planning to fab up the rest of it today, but spent the whole f**k!ng day getting our internet fixed... rodan
Didn't finish the exhaust, but I did finish the mid pipe. In addition to the resonator, I decided to add a flex section. I don't know if it was strictly necessary, but it can't hurt. Mid pipe terminates at a V band clamp. I'll have V bands on either end of the section that snakes around the axle to allow for easy disassembly and future mods... http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0227_zpsopitcdz1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0229_zpspxnrjyew.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y185/RodanAZ/Miata/VVT%20swap/DSC_0228_zpshuacmqmh.jpg If I ever want to be really obnoxious, I can just weld a turndown on a V band ring and delete the axleback entirely... GipsySpec.B
Mini has a hard on for V-band connections on their exhaust, I was looking at summit for ordering so that's good to hear. Can't wait for sound clips.
