Exhaust System Compatibility

Recommended Posts

Would an exhaust system designed for a 1999 Impreza 2.5rs fit my 2nd gen Legacy GT?

From what I have researched, I have seen that it will need some modification to fit; but what exactly would I have to modify to make it fit. Just lengthen and move the hangers?

Here is what I am looking at:

The headers and high flow cat look like they are an oem fit so you can use that with your stock axle back or aftermarket.

And yes for the catback you the midpipe will need to be extended and hangers moved to fit correctly. Just take it to a muffler shop and they will know what to do with it.

PS. if you want a picture of how your exhaust will look like I have the same one.

So yesterday I found a full exhaust system (headers to muffler tip) from a Legacy wagon with 90k for $110. For better or worse I cut all the heat shields off the headers and cat to ensure there were no visible cracks or leaks. I am debating about whether or not to wrap them now. They have surface rust and some people say the header wraps seriously shorten the lifetime.

1. Should I wrap the headers and the cat?

2. Should I replace the 3rd cat looking thing and the resonator with a larger resonator or remove them all together?

3. Muffler suggestions? I am considering either an Ebay N1 or an Ebay OBX Loop but I really don't want to spit rice.

i've never heard od header wrap shortening the lifetime, ive always heard that the wrap coupled with high temp paint or seal lengthens and protects from rust.. unless you live in a place where they use salt on snowy roads instead of sand.. then the wrap traps the salt and does the opposite..

what i would do is leave the ct unwrapped, wrao the headers, get a resonator (18") after the cat and get the vibrant performance #1046 muffler and you'll have a nice purr

I feel like living in Buffalo that header wrap would F**K my headers up. They salt before they anticipate it is going to snow, so when it does it just melts and makes slush/ice nastiness

That is why good headers are made from 316L or 321 stainless, even with header wrap they will last. When I fab up my setup it will be 321 for the headers, uppipe an downpipe, then 316 the rest of the way.

That looks like junk....

However...It is not junk. I know the guy who makes these headers. I am also the one who helped him produce these. He makes them in Aluminized steel and in a Stainless Steel version. They are PERFECT fit. They also sound AWESOME.

I have one on my car. I sold my Supers UEL header off RS25 for this header which was free ;)

So how long do I have to wait around for him to make me some? Or does he produce them regularly?

Looks good. But why not just have a muffler shop build the cat-back piping?

i have a 98 lgt wagon and i want to get a new exhaust. so what should i do? 2.25 piping 18" resonator and what tip? and what headers? can i do it all myself thanks

2.25 piping, vibrant 18 long 2.25 inlet/outlet resonator, and the 1046 muffler. UEL headers will bring out more of the boxer rumble. All of the cat-back 2.25 piping will need to be custom. My piping cost about $150.

Resonator: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vibrant-1791-Bottle-Style-Resonator-2-25-I-O-x-18-/120708511710?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c1ac9b7de&vxp=mtr

Muffler: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vibrant-1046-StreetPower-Single-Outlet-Muffler-2-5-Inl-/120697028882?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1c1a1a8112&vxp=mtr#ht_1828wt_1392

Headers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Subaru-Impreza-2-5L-Non-Turbo-95-05-Forester-Legacy-UEL-Exhaust-Header-Headers-/370622008419?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item564acb0c63&vxp=mtr#ht_823wt_1159

Headers with Cat: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tsudo-UEL-98-05-Subaru-Impreza-RS-Header-with-flow-Cat-/290722423382?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43b0682256&vxp=mtr

If you stick with the oem cats, stay with the 2.25 piping. If you go with the Tsuedo setup, switch to 2.5 piping and a 2.5 inlet/outlet vibrant resonator.

I just installed the 2.25 cat-back piping and vibrant muffler and resonator with stock headers and cats. It sounds great.

I feel like 2.25 back is good, and wont lose much back pressure. I've also heard of guys using glass packs as a resonator so it burbles. Also, which I found interesting, on rusubaru, they say UEL headers cause the ex.temp to be alot higher on the 4th and 2nd bank, cause valve damage. It might be turbo specific, but it just some good general knowledge to tuck under your hats

The problem with glass packs is that they do not last nearly as long as resonators.
