I don't have harnesses I believe there is a thread on here that has a link to ones you need which I believe is a reverse harness and then a subaru radio harness that you can get from like autozone or pepboys.

i'll have to tear it apart and take some pics of how I have it in there when I get a chance.

The harnesses at auto parts stores (and any other stores you find them, as well as nearly anywhere online) will be missing the wire at pin #7.

The factory radio and auto HVAC controls require that wire (along with the one at pin #1) for the illumination to work properly.

ae64.com is the only place that has 14-pin harnesses guaranteed to include both of those wires.

There is an excellent chance that any ebay wiring harness that supposedly will work in your car is going to be missing wires. When I ordered my new head unit from Crutchfield a couple of months ago, I got the free wiring harness and installation kit. Of course, what I did not find out until I received it was that the harness was missing two wires necessary to make the steering wheel controls work. It amazes me how wiring harnesses that are being made and sold for particular cars do not have all of the wires necessary to make everything function properly. Ae64.com hooked me up with the wiring and knowledge to make my awsc steering wheel controls kit work. For me, paying a few more bucks and getting everything required, and most importantly support if a question arises is worth it. Will those people selling wiring harnesses on ebay have a clue how to help you if something is missing in their wiring harness?

There should be two orange wires on the right side of that harness (one with a white stripe). The missing wire looks to be at pin #7.

Believe me, I like to save money whenever possible, and it stinks it costs that much more to get the correct harness with one extra wire.

Sorry, that one is missing the ORANGE/WHITE wire (pin #7). It won't work.

As mark5032 said, you need to see TWO orange wires -- plain ORANGE (at pin #1) and ORANGE/WHITE (at pin #7).

A reverse harness is the type that plugs into a factory radio. It's sometimes used to install a factory radio into a different car.

I call the opposite gender a "forward" harness (to distinguish from a reverse). A "forward" harness is what you normally use when all you're doing is removing your factory HU and replacing it with an aftermarket HU.

For the kind of install you want to do, you need both harnesses and they both must have all 14 wires.

Here's the scoop: Besides me, Metra is the only harness company whose Subaru 14-pin reverse harness has all 14 wires -- their 71-8901.

If you can find a genuine Metra 71-8901, you can use that for the reverse part. I just checked, and those were running $14 and up on eBay.

The problem with many eBay vendors is they often post a picture of whatever harness they had when they first started selling that item, and they never update their picture. So you might find one with a picture of a Metra 71-8901, but they ship you one from another manufacturer with the missing wire. If the price is way below $14, it's probably one of the other brands.

Nobody (besides me) makes a Subaru 14-pin "forward" harness with the ORANGE/WHITE wire. Not Metra, not Scosche, nobody. Everyone else's only has 13 wires.

If you buy both from me, I'm now discounting the price slightly on both. Contact me by e-mail for details (follow the links on my site).

Got the same issue, SRS module is in the way thus had to dremel the center console a way a bit. Even then though, I can't get the same angle as you @GTLegacy05. Maybe your headunit is much shorter?

It's sitting a little too flat, I can't angle it as far as yours is thanks to the airbag module.

To get it to even fit I already took out the divider

I tried to keep the divider there and just dremel it piece by peace, but even a single dim player is just too thick

Update:

I switched to JDM console and never looked back :)

Im surprised no one is doing the remote face plate trick. I was thinking about mounting a head unit either in the glove box or under the seat, then remote mounting the face plate to the ashtray area as a surface mount. Or doing like I did in my jeep and recessing it into the sunvisor.

The OP's install into the ashtray area looks nice tho! Ide like to see what all you had to do to get it to sit that way like others have said. There's a bunch of stuff right there.

Just get one with the motorized face so there is no CD slot. Because it looks weird when remote mounted.

I actually have an "old" pioneer that I was considering doing. Its the first OEL display unit they made. I forget the model number. Only issue with it, is its featureless. No MP3 support. Which is a bummer. I like using my parrot for MP3, but I want better sound.

Got it setup and mounted. No where as clean as GTLegacy05's setup, but just as functional, well except for the CD player...

i have my deck set up and attached pretty similarly to russian's except i have my bezel and faceplate remote attached so it sits flush with the ashtray area

Nice! How did you remote attach the faceplate? Kenwood sell a wire? Also I take it your CD player is useless right?

Pretty simple. Just get some cat5e ethernet cable and solder a bridge between the faceplate contacts and the contacts on the head unit. Takes a little patience sometimes, but its not too hard.

Unless you mount the rest of the head unit somewhere where you can access the CD slot, then yes, you would be rendering it pretty useless. Nice thing about remote mount, is that you can put the head unit pretty far away. Glove box, under the seat, center console maybe.

Then again...who uses CDs anymore? haha. (joking...I still have a book of them in my back seat...)

Awesome doesn't sound like a bad idea at all, and since my faceplate is a full sized one, no idiot would accidentally put a cd in and loose it behind the cover.

I might actually leave the HU where it's at and make the face plate be easily removable to insert a CD. I don't personally use CD's but I like having the ability to do so if I need to.

yeah i just bluetooth my phone or use aux in. but yeah i basically did what jeepguy said. except i didnt wanna make any permanent changes to the actual deck or faceplate by soldering directly to it, so i ordered replacement connectors for my specific deck and then just soldered that together. effectively i made an extension cable :D
