Another oil question (i know, i know...)

Looking for some actual experience to make my decision on whether or not to switch to synthetic or not.

Recently picked up an '05 5EAT Wagon with ~54k miles. Drove it home and did an oil change for piece of mind (5w-30 valvoline conventional to match the dealership oil changes on the car since new). I added about 1/2 a quart of oil after about 1500 miles to bring the level back up to where it needed to be according to the dipstick, seems about par for the course with these engines.

I'm gonna do another oil change in a bit, and I'm debating a couple of options:

  • Change the oil using 5w-30 valvoline conventional again, and in the meantime send off for an analysis by blackstone labs (i have the kit already)
  • Change to synthetic, probably a 5w-40 to prevent consumption

So my questions are as follows:

  1. Of the options above, what would you do and why?
  2. Does anyone have direct experience switching from conventional to synthetic with between 30k and 70k miles on the engine? If so, what oil weight were you using before / after the switch, and how did consumption change (if at all)?

Specifically looking for anyone who has real experience to answer question #2, thanks in advance.

Use synthetic. Try different brands until you stop consuming oil. Or use dyno, and try different brands until you stop consuming oil.

Ok, to put it simply do what BAC said. Synthetic oil at 54K isnt a horrible switch point. So the reason NOT to switch to synthetic is that conventional oil can leave deposits on seals and work its way into the metal of the motor. Synthetic will eat away at those deposits and can cause leaks. However synthetic is a great way to protect the engine more and extend oil change intervals.

As far as weight goes, keep it simple. 5w30 in the colder months, 5w40 in the warmer. There is a lot of talk about weights but unless you are racing the hell out of the car you will be fine with the basics. Again like BAC said, experiment with different companies until you find one your engine likes. We found that Rotella T6, Amsoil, Motul, Redline are all great oils and hold up to abuse. As far as conventional, no Mobil 1 or Royal Purple. Im sure others will chime in on their recommendations.

pizza hut has wednesday 50cents/wing deal

That's because they have to get rid of the back-stock of crappy wings from the 6 prior days.

Mm, I'm going to make wings for dinner tonight!

On a serious note though...I started a thread a while back about whether there was a correlation between the oil we use and our consumption. Most of the experiences were that some would have slight variations, but for the most part it was directly related to how you drive. The harder I drive, the more oil I go through. It's been the same with subaru synthetic, amsoil, castrol syntec, and rotella t6. I did go through a lot more 5w30 than I do 5w40.

I've read bad things about conventional oil.
