No, it was a straight twin engine.....two cylinders...with a 3 speed manual trans. I just mean that it had the same engine / trans layout as the old VWs

It had a whopping 16 horses when it was first released...and took nearly literally nearly a minute to get up to 60mph. However, it got 66mpg

I don't think VW and Subaru had any part of each other at the time. However, Subaru has partnered with almost every major auto maker in the world over the years. Their latest episode has been with Toyota.

I was going to say a ff 1 but the mirrors aren't in the right spot

it is an FF!, not all FF1-s had hood mounted mirrors. i am thinking it is maybe a USDM vs JDM thing?

Anyway, the FF-1 was the first subaru to use the now so iconic H4 and longitudinal layout.

Interesting tidbit i just learned, the FF-1 was also the first to be built in 4WD, albeit only 8 were made and were sold to an electric company and a village for municipal duty.
