The Wagoneers take on Homestead track

Track day this weekend . They had a great 2 for 1 pricing special so able to bring in the troops (Autocross buddies nicknamed the wagoneers since we all drive wagons) . My leggy wagon and two WRX wagons all 2005 model years.

Quite an eventfull Day . It was a circus like atmosphere with another club FARA sharing track time but bringing craziness and fluff including loud music. A portable dyno, near naked promo girls . The club I run with is full of serious racers and they were a bit disturbed. Regardless it made for some interesting side action between runs.

First my ride. First day on a track since last year and first time to try my wilwoods. I was a little concerned about my pads and worried if they would hold using Hawk HP + pads (I have dedicated track pads on order but they won't arrive in time). Happy to say the same pads but on different calipers held up fine and i was able to go deep into corners with minimal fade. The willwoods being 4 piston fixed calipers really reduce the slop and mushiness in our brakes. Can't prove but I believe the Aluminum calipers help disipate heat better than the stockers.

Here is my brake setup:http://im1.shutterfly.com/media/47a1d825b3127ccefd1c806ed30f00000030O00AaN2zRq2aNWYPbz4U/cC/f%3D0/ps%3D50/r%3D0/rx%3D720/ry%3D480/

For tires I used a set of Dunlop Z1 star Specs. These were tires I got from my friend in the Blue WRX wagon when he got a new set. I have dedicated Kuhmo Ecsta V 710 tires that I use in autocross but so soft they would not even make a full track day.

Here is my street setup (06 Spec B wheels) and my track/autocross Wheels (Prodrives):

Notice the clearance is minimal between the calipers and the wheel spokes.

Here is another pic showing the sketchy clearance which is about 1-2mm at best.

One thing I like about the homestead track is the paddock area. They have these awesome Shaded stalls with fans and electrical outlets. Great stuff when you live in Florida.

Here is a pic of of stall I shared with the wagon crew. Notice there is a viewing area up top:

Plenty more pics including the track, A Borg Warner twin scroll Turbo, and a crazy towable Dyno coming tomorrow

There are Track pictures coming my way but here are a few .

Two Porshes dukeing it out before turn 4, a tough hairpin after a short straight.

Here is a pic of a Miata treading dangerous waters passing a Honda on Turn 4 (I spun out in the same area) My story on that later.

Here is another member on this site I Invited. He didn't run as he has snow tires on his newly bought spec B.

Here is a wicked fast STI with rotated mount Turbo setup and ridiculous Prodrive wheels (the real deal not lowend prodrives like mine)

Notice no clearance issues with the calipers . I asked him for a trade but no go

Here is something interesting . A representative from Borg Warner was at hand . He mentioned a Subaru version including rotated mount twin scroll Turbo with all the bells and whistles including twin UP and LGT/WRX fitment . I'm starting a special savings account today. Who cares if theres a waiting list for this goodness.

Here is another interesting sideshow. They had a wheeled two wheel portable DYNO at the event (never seen one before). All the heavy hitters were on it to show thier macho bravado. One Dinan Turbo M-5 made well north of 500 HP/TQ. You could see the graphs and plots on a big Flatscreen . People were cheering (or booing) . Too bad they didn't have a 4 wheel Dyno or I would have gone up there and blown everyone out of the water.

I Had my homemade headrest mount car cam but for some reason it didn't take vids (Bummed). Here is a vid (not mine) of the same track. Notice what happens to the Mustang on turn five at the 1 minute mark.

At the 1:45 sec mark you will see a Lotus go wide which is exacly where I spun out. Normally I like to be alone and work on my line . My Evil twin brother in a WRX wagon that used to be mine (I modded it with lots of nice goodies) caught up and started tailing me. I should have let him by but i thought, hell no I have a Faster car, slightly beter balance and am a superior driver (in my mind). Besides its 2.5 L vs 2.0 , Luxo vs Rice, twin vs twin (goes back a long ways). Sped up on the straight to create distance leading to turn 4 which led me to more speed than i bargained for. Missed my brake point, turn in point and went wide . I was doing okay untill I hit some marbles (Shredded tire bits probably put there on purpose). I did a cool controlled drift that spun me around completely facing oncoming traffic. Luckily those behind me were at a distance and were able to go around me . I limped back on the track tail between my legs. First time ever with a full spin around like that . Learned my lesson not to worry about others and work on my own line. The rest of the afternoon was uneventfull. I worked on smoothness and felt really dialed by the end. Fun track, not long and demanding like Sebring. My Leggy did great for a weekday grocery getter with 120 k miles. By next event I should have better brake pads and my BNR Turbo in. I might need wider tires . Its never ending, might as well just get a track only car.

Partly true but my V 710's are on their last legs .They would have died on the track this weekend. The heat we have here in Florida is different . Not only could you fry an egg on the track this past Sat, you could have probably baked some bread. The tires in the pics above were normal looking at the beginning of the track session . And those are street Dunlop Z1 star specs. There is a reason Hoosier makes an R-6 and an A-6 compound . The first is a track compound, the latter a gummier and softer autocross compound . V 710's are similar to the A-6. At the end of an autocross session, the V 710's are soft as butter and picking up all kinds of debris. Thats under 1 minute of driving. With a track session at 20-30 min they will probably melt and then I will cry.
