Just made a 4.5 mile trip to the grocery store and back on a cold engine. Running somewhat crappy.

Returned home, hooked up the notebook and pulled the Learning View:

then I reset the ECU. Haven't been back out on the road yet, but the engine always seems to run significantly better for some time after an ECU reset.

Look towards the firewall in the passenger side footwell. It will be on the left, hiding just under the edge of the carpet. When you put your hand where you think it would be, reach a little farther.

Found the connectors and hooked them up. Turned key to On and acts as expected (fan cycles on/off, etc).

Still cannot read rom with ECU Flash. I click Read from ECU and then select 2005-2006 blah blahLGTblahblah (or whatever it says; it seems to be the only appropriate choice for this 2005 LGT) from the list and I get the following in the log:

[10:07:07.750] Using intrface FT232R USB UART A400fN1b

[10:07:07.750] interface close

[10:07:07.812] unable to connect to vehicle interface

[10:07:07.812] interface close

Am I forgetting to do something? This is all with key on, engine not running.

did you install the drivers accompanied in the ecuflash installation? weird that ecuflash wont connect yet romraider does. again i wonder if your ecu is faulty to some degree, however my tuner buddy looked at your LV and said it's def something internal in the engine.

This is a possibility. A few years ago I helped rebuild an 11.5:1 compression NA engine. We saw lots of detonation and upon pulling it apart we noticed that the top of one of the combustion chambers had a little bit of damage that was creating a hot spot and causing the detonation. We had put so much work into porting the head that we decide to reuse it and pulled both heads to shave them down. That solved it.

I uninstalled, rebooted, resinstalled ECU Flash. Same results.

I also tried with my son's MacBook Pro running Windows 7 and once again got the same results.

I am using a VAG-COM cable (this one[ame=http://www.amazon.com/OBD2-Diagnostic-Cable-KKL409-1-VAG-COM/dp/B002WIN8VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308322861&sr=8-1]http://www.amazon.com/OBD2-Diagnostic-Cable-KKL409-1-VAG-COM/dp/B002WIN8VQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1308322861&sr=8-1[/ame]). Does that make a difference?

Maybe that would tie in with the misfires noted in cylinder #4?

The fact that the misfire is mainly in #4 but also somewhat in #1 makes this a possibility. You may have a carbon buildup that only became problem within the last month. Has it been getting progressively worse or did it become huge overnight? Tiny nicks in metal can become hotspots and cause carbon to build up. This is why race engines are polished on the exhaust side to prevent buildup.

Your LV looks safe at idle, so I would get some injector cleaner in there and let it idle for a while. MAYBE revving it to 1500. If it is carbon buildup, which I suspect since it's not throwing codes, it seems to be quite severe. If it is severe, stop ******* around and get a can of seafoam and enjoy the smoke show.

Well... I guess I am going to have to ask you once again to check out this thread http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/another-blown-engine-2005-legacy-2-5gt-turbo-162696.html

That episode occurred after the start of this thread (when the whole "lag on acceleration" thing began). I can't say it was ever determined exactly what the problem was, but the pre-cat (?) was found to be severely deteriorated and - do I have this right? - starving the turbo's air intake?

So the low oil isn't an issue anymore?

If the car was running rich for any period of time, that would exacerbate the carbon build up issue.

Oil does not appear to be an issue at this time.

It seems like the rational (and inexpensive) thing to try would be injector cleaner and/or Seafoam as you suggested. Can you explain how to administer SeaFoam into this engine?
