GWIM got a 2011 Sportage SX (AWD), Rick bought a GTI..

Yes, it's Shadow Blue Metallic. It stickered at $24, 560, and the TDI was $26,500. Unfortunately they were only offering the 1.9% financing on the GTI, so that was a big part of my decision. I was very impressed with how strong the TDI pulled, and I was very close to buying it instead. On another note I was able to average 29.5mpg's on the GTI.

I told you, you could've got 2.5% APR elsewhere or did that extra .5% really put the deal over the top?

But he got the 6-speed for some reason. The GTI, IMO, is one of the VERY few cars that is better with an automatic.

How so? Is that because the automatic is a DSG?

I have enough drama for now.....

What put the deal over the top is that Mike Raisor VW is offering lifetime engine warranties. That's right, as long as I own this car and maintain it to there standards the engine is warrantied for the life of the car. They don't offer this on the TDI. I was told they would allow 3" turboback exhausts (catted), CAI, and AMS stage 2 tunes, and still cover this engine for life.

At that point I didn't care about getting 2.5% financing on the TDI.

The reason is simple. Automatics just aren't my style.

Holy crap, that is good looking. I love the look of the two door. Great color too. Congrats.

Thanks! It was a hard choice between the DSG and the manual, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. The two door kind of reminds me of the old Civic hatches.

I would have made the exact same choice. I also would have gotten the 6MT. It's cheaper to repair, since that'll be on you. And since you have an engine warranty in writing, I'd beat the snot out of it every chance I got. You, sir, just hit the automotive jackpot!

I told the salesperson I will take either a 4 door or a 2 door. Looking for either White or Red. Dream combo for the TDI is two door with the bi-color onyx wheels. Unfortunately, they don't offer a decent blue on the Golf TDI.

The red four doors look really good. I was told the two door in the TDI was really hard to come by. I almost went with a 4 door Silver GTI with the DSG.

Mike Raisor Imports has to be the coolest damn dealership I have ever been to. They let me test drive five different cars and take one of them home without even acting like it was a big deal (I live over 50miles away). My salesmen, the finance guy, and the Sales manager all had modded VW's, and Audi's. When I told them that I was worried about the reliability of the GTI's engine they said "Why, it's warrantied for life". Very cool.

The engines are generally not what have the most problems in the VWs, it is EVERYTHING else. It is going to take at least 10 years of improved reliability and service from VW to even get me in the showroom. The clock hasn't started yet.

I am curious to know how many VWs you have had in your life. And when you say EVERYTHING else, what components are you exactly referring to? I have owned 3 MkIIs, 1 MKIV, and 1 MKVI. The MKIIs don't have as much electronics in them, back then not many cars do so there isn't much to break. I can't say VWs are as reliable as Hon-Duhs but my experience with them are not as bad as you seemed to lead on. Could it be you had a bad apple of the bunch?

No it was not a bad apple, consulting Consumer Reports ratings confirms that. I have owned one VW and that was more than enough, a 2001 VW Passat 1.8T Wagon. Here is a partial list off the top of my head in just 5 years and 45k miles:

MAF meter

Coil packs (even after they were replaced under recall)

ABS module

Control arms....twice

Rear brakes wore out in 20k miles

Turn signal switch stopped working

All vaccum hoses rotted out in 25k miles

Consumed headlight and taillight bulbs

Airbag light....twice

Belly pan kept falling off the car (probably because dealer service were idiots and didn't know how to install it)

Driver's visor light stopped working

Squeeks and rattles galore

Shocks were toast after about 30k miles

I absolutely babied this car and took very good care of it like I do all of my cars. Nothing that broke could have been prevented because it was a failure of design and engineering. I was lucky and had a base model without power seats, sunroof, etc... those with higher end models suffered much worse. Not to mention that it required specially approved oils to prevent the common sludge issues with this engine and had "lifetime" transmission fluid and proprietary power steering fluid. I frequented my models forums and these were all common issues, I did not have a lemon, that is just how they are designed. To top it off the dealer service was absolutely horrible and they almost killed me on one occasion. After I had the control arms replaced they didn't re-install the pinch bolt that held the top arms to the wheel assembly.

Like I said, VW will probably never get my business again.

Well great, in the meantime how about you fuck off, and stop cluttering up this thread with your dislike for VW products based on your anecdotal ownership of one VW 10 years ago.
