Sounds very much like rod knock to me. Running at high RPM for extended periods like that super heats the oil and will cause it to break down, causing bearing failure.

 

Only way it would be a valvetrain problem was if the valves floated and caused a retainer to fail or spring to break. This is basically the same valvetrain as the JDM STI that redlines at 8000rpm (iirc) so I think that's pretty unlikely.

IIRC he sold his short block here in the classifieds and replaced it with an EJ257, went for a cheap price. Spun bearing. Wanted to buy but didn't have the room or time to play.
