m sprank
I hear you. I do have the "third" plate that allows users to leave the passenger side (contains the atmosph press sensor) valve intact and installed. So all they have to remove is the drivers side valve and the pump (and the plastic tube between the valves) if they want. But I love to chop it all up, ditch everything except the sensor itself, block it all off, remove the codes, check the fueling and go on with my life. Depending on teh car between 7 and 12 pounds of unsprung weight gone. And a much easier future spark plug change too.
fahr_side
But I love to chop it all up, ditch everything except the sensor itself, block it all off, powdercoat everything fluorescent green while I'm in there, polish anything the powdercoater missed, and and and... Sprankle sells a very neat kit of blanking plates for this job, and the price is right. Xplosivo1
What is the best way to separate the atmospheric sensor from the metal casing?
m sprank
You wont be able to remove it 100%. Best to cut the top of the solenoid off (which contains the sensor). You will then have a small disc to work with. You can drill holes in the outer perimeter of the disc to use for mounting it. I lock the solenoid in a vice and use an air powered cut off wheel to cut through the solenoid body.
krot84
Can someone please tell me the purpose of this pump? Why some have it and some don't? I don't. Thanks

m sprank
It is a "smog pump". It was installed by Subaru when the up pipe cat was removed. Its purpose is to "pre-heat" the cat to operating temp at start up for idle emissions.

BAC5.2
I see, so how come some have it and some don't ? It was model year dependent. The 06 WRX had one, but not the 06 STI. Just rolling changes between models. Xplosivo1
So...lets say the sensor isn't there will it still work? I was trying to cut the sensor out of the metal can and I think I cut off too much. The only thing I have left is the plastic square on top with the pins. I noticed the other end of the pins were cut while I removed the plastic piece on top. Any idea whether this will still work? If not what other options do I have? m.sprank...I am hoping you can answer this. Thanks!
m sprank
It might still work. I have cut them down to almost nothing (including exposing the "pins"). If you cut too much, I have 1 spare already cut out. You must have a sensor or the car will not run properly.

Based on this thread I think I will be ok: http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showpost.php?p=29588444&postcount=275 The only problem I have now is that all the pins are touching because of how the cutting wheel cut it off. Any way you can give me a pin out?

m sprank
All schematics are in the "vacation pix". You can cut it down to almost nothing and still be ok. Like the photo from nasioc shows. That is about all that is left to mine.
eldrego
Did this on my car last weekend, it started running really lean. Went back in to make sure everything was reinstalled properly, now it revs then shuts off, any ideas?

Flinkly
I grabbed the pics from NASIOC in case the next person didn't want to wade through 33 more pages. looks pretty tiny after it's all whittled down. now only if I didn't have to take off my manifold and turbo... * Build Thread * 26.53 MPG - 12 month Average *
jakesurfin
wow! I didn't know you could cut it down that small to the square...I think i'll cut mine down that far to hide it a little better! thanks, Flinkly!
m sprank
You can cut it down even further than that if you are brave. But that is about as small as I would recommend going.

Flinkly
so i'm a little confused. KStech has the block-off plates for each side of the engine, and then a third plate. Do I need the third plate if I cut my atmo. sensor into a cute little square and zip-tie it to something? or do I need it if I keep my entire solenoid? does that all make sense? also, I didn't buy the third plate, and plan on removing the whole solenoid and keeping the tiny bit for the atmo. sensor. and so I think I screwed up. * Build Thread * 26.53 MPG - 12 month Average *
