jonnyg113
cant this be done without removing the shifter, how hard is it?
jah64
I suppose you could but be careful with the metal shavings getting everywhere. Taking the shifter out of the car is very simple.

jonnyg113
thanks for the post. The hardest part for me was finding a re-threading die. After a few of the guys on this thread said they found one at their local hardware store, I though I could do the same. No deal
JOE_1985
same here, ieven went to major tool places, no dice i oredered a die from the link on the 1st page, its a really good die, i used wd 40 for cutting lube
Instanced
This is just a thought, but has anyone thought about just cutting a piece out of the middle and just welding it back together? (That way you wouldn't have to rethread it? i think alot of people have better skills with a hacksaw and a die then they do with a welder... using a die is SUPER easy... welding is not... and i'd rather have my shifter head stripped then the whole thing snapping in half because i can't weld worth *HIT! phenryiv1
I have had trouble with the shaft below the factory threading. Did anyone else have to grind down the diameter of the shaft to get the die to take a proper bite? Patrick Looking for spacers or adapters to install aftermarket speakers in the doors of your Legacy? mccorry
Nope... I had to grind down the "shoulder" on the shaft.. but after that it was fine.
phenryiv1
Hmmm, that is odd...even with cutting fluid, my attempts to add threads were a giant FAIL, as the diameter of the shaft seemed to expand just below the original threading. They seem to be wider than the "teeth" of the threading by nearly a millimeter. Patrick Looking for spacers or adapters to install aftermarket speakers in the doors of your Legacy? mccorry
Do you have the correct die? It should be an M12x1.25.

phenryiv1
Do you have the correct die? It should be an M12x1.25. Yes- the threading perfectly matches the stock threading. It just looks like the shaft below the threading is too wide. I'll snap some pics tonight. Patrick Looking for spacers or adapters to install aftermarket speakers in the doors of your Legacy? mccorry
Yes... please do. My die slightly cut / cleaned the stock threads then cut perfect new threads from there down. No issues whatsoever.
MarkV
you think they'd have a rethreading die at a place like true value?, or get lucky at the town harware store? patrack92314
i did this mod yesterday in my 99 legacy gt it had a metal ring type thing to stop the shifter from going down . so i took a dremal with a cut off wheel and cut around the ring but not through the shaft then i took a dy and made new threads all the way down and then figured out where i wanted it and cut it off .i left mine in the car and just covered the stuff around with a towel . came out very nice. i am very happy with it

cmason100
do you think you could do this without taking the shifter out of the car? in place with a grinder and a cut off wheel? just wondering.
mccorry
I wouldn't recommend it. The metal shavings would fall into the pivot and cause issues. It's really easy to get the shifter arm out.
strykr
anybody know a way to do this without rethreading? Like cutting off the threaded area and trimming down the rod, then reattaching the threaded area? Or any other way?
mccorry
Nope... you'll need to cut new threads. Send it to me and I'll do it for ya.
