Which car meets these requirements?

Recommended Posts

Convertible

All Wheel Drive

Decent trunk space

Capable of moderate off roading

Decent/Good gas mileage

Only thing I can think of is a Jeep Wrangler which has pretty crappy gas mileage, but I was curious if anything came to mind. Ideally newer (2000+), reliable, and under $15k

I don't think moderate off-roading and decent gas mileage can exist together.... Convertible off roading vehicles though...hmmm... Older Land Rover? Once again, not so good on the gas mileage.

335xi convertible with fat tires on it?

Seriously though, almost any car with a bit of rubber on it can do trails. If you've ever been to some of the poorer parts of the world (or, hell, Aruba), you'll see stuff like Toyota Echos bombing down BAD rock/dirt roads at 40mph. And that's the locals driving home.

You could always convert Legacy to Outback.....

The car you need doesn't exist, but Jeep did make a 2.5L 4 banger engine that they put in the Wrangler and the Cherokee for a while. My GF had one before her Corolla. With a 5 speed stick shift and 2WD she was getting pretty good gas mileage too.

They did make them with 4WD, but I don't think they made them past the year 2000.

I think you're SOL on this one.....

Given the range of systems that have been branded as 4WD, and the at least as broad range of systems that have been branded as AWD, I say you're picking nits and the Wrangler does meet the AWD requirement.

Now, if the requirement was, say, full-time AWD with an automatically locking center differential then the Wrangler would not meet that requirement. But if anything I expect that the OP would prefer part-time 4WD/AWD for the (theoretically) better fuel economy.

Que? AWD = center differential to me

I am not sure if OP really meant AWD, but if he did, Wrangler does not meet that requirement.

That's typical... :spin: The only engine alternative for the LandRover with a decent fuel consumption and that would be interesting for commercial use.

Doing the diesel conversion on a D90 is possible, one of the guys in the local 4x4 club I was in had it done. For about $15,000. In addition to a workable D90 being at least $20-$25k. What's your price range again?

Oh and they only imported the D90 from 94-96 I think, so there's not many out there.

Hahaha, 4WD is fine.

I honestly don't think it does either outside of a A4/6 quattro cabriolet which I doubt falls into the category.

I didn't think anything did, but we've got a pretty decent pool of car knowledge so I was wondering if something quirky might pop up that I haven't heard of.

.

They made an A4 cab from 03-09 that you could get in Quattro. IIRC you could get it in either a 1.8t(or later 2.0T) or a 3.0/3.2. Not sure if one would be in your price range though. With the top down you loose a lot of trunk space. I also wouldn't recommend purposely offroading it.

You could also look at a TT cab, but it doesn't have the largest of trunks, along with a real awd system either. A 00-04 should be in your price range.

An old Bronco, Blazer, or even a Scout would fit your bill if it wasn't for mileage, or secure trunk.
