I use a Canon Digital Rebel with the standard lense. Does a really nice job.

i do like the softness around the dog.

 

step back further, zoom in leaving a little more space around the dogs face, and aim for the eyes, then crop your picture.

 

the first thing people lock onto are eyes. after that it won't matter if the rest is a little out of focus and most usually they will be.

 

using a 70-200L is maybe 10 feet away
