THE ULTIMATE floor jack?

Recommended Posts

Oh yea, to get the car that high I used pieces of 4x4 blocks and 2x4 blocks. I have the big 6 ton stands from Harbor fright. I've been doing this kind of work on cars since the mid 1970's.

I guess I would also teach guy's to bring the car up slowly. Don't try and go the whole way in one shot.

Here's the jack I have. I got it when it was on sale. I guess I was wrong, not 20" max but 23" almost 24" lift.

Same one I got...in your original post you said 20" so I thought you had a different jack. I love this jack:wub:

Cant go wrong with the good old harbor frieght low pro jacks. Mines still going strong and gets under anything. Ony issues are cars with body kits where the jack hits the kit before the jack point.

That's why you drive the car up on a 2x6 before you try and jack it up.

Had the little black craftsman. Had to pump forever to get the car up but lasted like 5 years before it started leaking.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00950523000P?pid=00950523000&aff=Y&i_cntr=1330636458556&sid=I0084400010000100600#reviewsWrap

Then I got this aluminum one from harbor freight. Works good when it works. Took far less pumps than the craftsman and its very lightweight. However, I had to replace it twice(good thing I got the replacement plan). First time was a defect with the handle, the ball spring was no good. Took it back right after. Now the second one I got lasted a total of 5 months before it crapped out and wouldnt hold pressure. Keep in mind I only used the jack prolly like 4 times in 5 months.

So i took it back to harbor freight, and the manager made me a deal. I paid $13 more and got the 3 ton heavy duty one. She told me this one is alot more dependable. But it is heavy as shit. Like over 75 pounds. Havent opened it yet, only time will tell if it will last.

I got my new Torin (Big Red (though it's black)) 2-ton long reach floor jack

Northern Tool Item# 1448026.

http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200349257_200349257

Got it for under $200, and this time bought the extended warranty  for $21. Weighs 160lbs. I probably won't use it much except for transmission swaps, and when my aluminum jack fails. I didn't measure the hump height (arm pivot point height), but will do so and also measure new ride height after lengthening KW coilovers up to more reasonable height (damn you suspension geometry).

Will buy wood or tiles to roll up onto for use with it if not too much thickness required, which I need to do anyways after measuring out the garage for my alignment checkup positioning (ideal to have 4 corners level). Looking forward to keeping up my own alignments now that I know how easy it is to do :)

If I could get an ideal long reach jack like AC Hydraulics instead for twice the price, I probably would. But for triple what I paid, I personally probably wouldn't. Doesn't make the car any better or dramatically easier to work on. $400 also buys some nice snap-on tools.

This is the one I also have and broke when the saddle slipped and it shock loaded it.

1.5 ton, goes up to 17.25" for me, and fits under my lowered car :) I just toss it back in the box it came in with foam casing, and put it in my trunk. Light weight :)

One of the pistons got stuck, so I pulled the roller c-clip and roller pin, and pulled out the stuck piston, then swapped pistons side to side. Now both are sliding free again, and jack appears to work. I am a fool for not buying the extended warranty on this item. I never thought I would say that.

Hopefully it keeps working now. I'm never getting under it even for a second without a jack stand. One jack fail episode is plenty, thankfully not a bad one at that.

Saw this in email today, but of course they price it just high enough to make it feel like you're being stupid with your money if you buy it: http://www.tciauto.com/tc/transmission-jack-adapter.html?AID=3236

I used this one when I had to pull my tranny last year.

You need to get the car up pretty high, but with blocks of 4x4's it's not that hard to do with two floor jacks. I got the wagon up high enough that I could put the tranny on the jack than roll it under the front of the car.

I have 4 of the 6 ton jackstands too.

I have the same one, used it for two swaps. Mine has gotten a bit unstable in that it will lean to the left or right; the scissor aspect does not have a provision to keep it from leaning. So I have to take care to keep it vertical as I raise it. I also should come up with an anti-slip solution, such as a sheet of rubber, as the painted top of it allows me to swivel the Trans around whether intended or not.

My ideal would be to just hoist and lower the front of the car frame up above and lower onto a stationary engine/Trans, but this does not appear popular outside of American cars.

^^^ I was looking at that one the other day myself. Saw something like it at Harbor Fright over the weekend. Told the GF if I ever need another heavy floor jack that would be it.
