Just Installed AST 4100s

Yep, just got them installed. No, AST doesn't make a kit for the Legacy GT, just yet. I'm currently working with Vorshlag and AST to produce a kit for the LGT. A big thank you to Vorshlag for getting me the pieces in time for the installation. This kit is from the new WRX and includes camber plates, rear spherical bearing shock mounts, tender springs, 550 lb front springs and 700 lb rear springs. The front fit like a dream with no issues whatsoever. The rears we had to get creative with.

Here's the pictures of the product and what we remembered to take pictures of:

Sexy Vorshlag Camber Plates

The problem with the rear shocks arose:

Time to go to Van Dyke Fabrication in Rocklin, CA:

The shock sleeves were too wide and the holes for the bolt were too small.

The sleeves on the lathe:

Almost finished milling down the sleeves.

The finished product.

Once we finished at Van Dyke Fabrication we completed the install.

The rears are in and fit perfectly fine.

Again, big thanks to Vorshlag and Van Dyke Fabrication, without you guys this couldn't have been possible.

man are those springs stiff enough for you? How's the ride on the street?

The ride really isn't that bad, the quality of the shocks are top notch so they effectively support the spring rates. Plus, I drive on decent roads. I do, however, look for some rough roads to see if it's bad, it's really not.

I'll be willing to give people in the Sacramento area a ride to feel how good the suspension feels once I get it dialed in, which should be Wednesday.

So, just a minor inconvenience, the adjusters aren't easily accessible. I have adjuster extenders on the way and we're going to cut them to length. I'm also going to cut the material around where the adjuster is so I don't have to take apart my interior just to adjust dampening.

I'm assuming they would use the same pricing as the coil overs for the GR.

Everything matched up perfectly except the rear shock sleeves.

Good to hear. I was considering picking up some Ohlins but I might be swayed if this kit turns out well and much cheaper;)

The modifications made to the kit are really simple to make it work. I'm working with Vorshlag to see if they plan to talk to AST about making these modifications for a LGT kit.

I did some research and it looks like in the initial search Ohlins DFVs are $4100 without camber plates.

Specced out AST 4100s are almost $3000 this includes camber plates and everything needed to bolt up. Not to mention the ASTs have a lifetime warranty too.

Just to kind of clarify, to compare these to Ohlins is a difficult feat.

First off, you can save a lot of money by using your stock mounts, because you still have your stock camber bolts. You don't have to purchase camber plates to suffice your camber needs. Vorshlag also has by far some of the nicest camber plates I have seen. The spherical bearing on the plates are massive and they don't make a sound, not to mention the bearing is also easily replacable if need be. The same goes with the rear spherical bearing shock mounts.

Secondly, Vorshlag allows you to customize your spring rates to whatever you need or want. With the Ohlins you're at 9kg/mm front and 7kg/mm rear. I specifically chose the stiffer spring rates because I plan to AutoX and Track my car. I don't mind a stiffer spring when I know the shock can handle it. The Hyperco springs offered with the AST Shocks come in spring rates of 350, 450, 550, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000 and 1100 lb/in springs. Basically for any driving experience you want to obtain.

Thirdly, keep in mind these shocks are able to be custom valved to meet your dampening needs, for instance if you really wanted to run an 1100lb spring or if you wanted the comfort of the 350lb spring. These shocks are able to be custom valved at a local shop as where you can't do this with say a kit consisting of Koni yellows. These are completely customizable to whatever your needs are. These also have the option to run spring tenders, which I chose to opt for and when installing the coilovers you can see for yourself the tender springs fill up the room that the spring doesn't.

Finally, there's a lifetime warranty for the original owner. So essentially these shocks are going to outlast your car and you can simply change the spring rates if your needs change.

Now, I'm not sayin Ohlins is a bad shock, they are actually a great design. What I am saying for the money that you spend on the ASTs you'll be much happier because you know you got what you wanted because you customized it instead of buying an off the shelf kit.

I do love the suspension that I chose because it's completely what I wanted. I wanted something stiff enough to appease my needs of a very stiff spring rate. I couldn't find this with any other kit on the market without spending too much money. This is definitely a bang for my buck.

To install the extenders for my Ohlins, i carefully drilled a hole through the carpet material. Installed extender through hole and tested to be sure there was enough clearance. Used one piece of hook and loop,(hook side only)to secure part from bouncing around.

Bumpity... Anyword on a kit yet?

I'll get in touch with Vorshlag and see how soon they're going to have the required shock bushings for the rear. As soon as they have them, anyone can put the 09 WRX ASTs on their car.

Might as well do an update as well. Went to my first AutoX, the suspension handled it beautifully. I adjusted the shocks to 9 front and 11 rear. Now that I'm back on the roads, I dialed the shocks down to 1 front and 2 rear and it's very manageable. I can definitely tell it's a stiffer spring, but it's not jarring or harsh by any means.

Stole some of these for better quality:

I'm interested...

I'll let Brian know at Vorshlag there is some interest. They said the bushings are easy to get. If you call Vorshlag regarding these coilovers, let them know I talked to you about it. :)
