959 - Most desirable car (in my mind) EVER. I've lusted after this car since '88. I've followed the 20+ years of the NHTSA and other government agencies constantly cock-blocking any import and legalization efforts. Yes, here are faster, newer, more technologically advanced rides out there. But, nothing has quite the combination of desirability, sexy , fast, rareness, and lust factor this thing does. I think a tuner finally managed to modify and legalize a handful of them a few years ago.

Bill Gates and handful of others had/have models in "museum" or "display-only" status for many years.

Given unlimited funds, this is the top car I'd have in my "Leno-Garage," along with a Buick GSx, Buick GNX, F40, Tri-Power convertible GTO, 427 'Vette drop-top, and others...

Sigh.

Bill Gates' 959 was sitting in a federal warehouse for years, right next to Steve Jobs' 959.

Correct but that was years ago. After millions of dollars and a few court cases Bill Gates and associates got the right to drive there US legal converted 959s on US roads. I believe they were limited to only being able to drive them for 2500 miles a year on US roads. And when the shop converted them to US spec they also found ways to add about 90 and bring the power rating up to somwhere around 540hp.

God I love the 959, such an amazing car. And to think that was 1986 with 450hp AWD 3100lbs car.

Bruce Canepa was supposedly involved with modding a few of them for both power and legality but I can't find the one good story from a few years ago. But a quick Google search also reveals that Canepa has a somewhat leery past as far as disclosing facts about cars that he has sold.

I saw a Canepa converted 959 for sale in the states a few years ago, the price tag was 400k.

Sounds about right. Especially considering that the 959 was, what, $235k new? Plus all of the work that gets put in to convert it? Someone out there would pay it. Looks like there are a few out there right now but none have a price tag.

The local Porsche group took a ride out to Michael Kittredge's place last month to see his new Porsche only barn (above is his old garage). Jags, Morgans, Porsche, McLaren, Merc, Ferrari, Lambo, Bentley, Fisker, and more... a Car Guys wet dream I didn't want to leave.

1939 Auto Union type D. v-12 twin supercharged engine making around 460bhp.

I believe the handling of these things was unique enough that the team considered hiring relative newbies to drive them - rather than try to retrain established drivers who were used to the handling of conventional race cars.
