More pics. This time with the top up. I actually think it looks better with the top up, which is very unusual for a car designed to be a drop top.

Ok so its offical, the 'stacked' exhaust tips are fake, they pull the same ghetto crap they did with the IS-F

Well that's pretty lame. I didn't think Ferrari would do something like that.

Pulling that crap on a $70K IS-F is bad enough, but oh well. Pulling the same garbage on a car 3 times as expensive, and from a company that prides itself on quality/craftsmanship/exclusivity....is just embarassing.

I have to defend my beloved Ferrari's, so here goes:

  • I have been following Ferrari road and racing cars for more than 30 years. While I am not an authority on Ferrari, I would certainly contended that I am a passionate Tifosi. The styling of the new California might not appeal to everyone, but it is a milestone car for Ferrari for the following reasons:

  • This is the first front engine V8 road car ever from Ferrari. All others have been of the 12 cylinder variety. That alone, will insure it's place in Ferrari history. That said, it is unlikely that it will be a collectors item for the following reason...

  • It will be the single most produced Ferrari car ever. The target number is 4500 per year, more than any other car ever produced in the small Italian village of Maranello. The wait list is over two years long and growing...Sorry Azca. The first one hundred are spoken for.

  • First ever retractable hardtop Ferrari. The top weighs 11lbs(less than the fabric top on the F430.

  • Let's clear up the "fake" exhaust talk. Butterfly valves are actuated in the exhaust to produce different sounds at different RPM's, and actually piped in such a way that it changes the sound for the occupants, with different sounds for the top up or down. In addition to that, the exhaust still exits from the those "fake" exhaust tips, just like they do on the fake ones on the F430, the LP460, every Porsche made, and the R8. It is designed to keep the crap off of the back valence and the tips themselves. Clever, huh.

  • The design of this car was not intended to be retro. It certainly shares many design elements with the original 250 GT California, but every modern Ferrari has borrowed design elements from classic Ferrari's of the past. This is how Ferrari design house Pininfarina has kept continuity in the line for more than 50 years. (look at the air intake scoops of the F430, and then google a picture of a 250 LM. Also, the original 250 GT California had single tail lights, not the much beloved twins. Continuity, my friends.

I will leave you with this shot. Damn interesting design. Ferrari has pushed the design envelope for decades.

What make you say the F430, LP640 (I assume that's what you mean), R8 and Porsches have fake exhaust tips? Mayb we are not talking about the same thing, we are not talking about the surrounding trim pieces. What we are complaining about is that the California has 2 exahust ports on each side stacked, but from the pic it looks like only the top one actually has an exhaust pipe coming out. The bottom exhaust port trim appears to be there only for show, there is nothing inside of it...

the photo that Edkwon posted doesn't show the exhaust tip on the bottom. This one does. The top exhaust exit is tuned for cruising speeds with the top up. As soon as you accelerate, the butterfly valves open up, diverting part of the exhaust to the much larger opening at the bottom. Much more growl and cam gear symphony mixed together.

As a point of engineering, Ferrari has never had fake duct work on their cars. When the original Testarossa came out, it had only one intake on the front bumper. People complained "it is out of proportion!" Ferrari answered back, we don't put in fake ducts, just for symmetry.

As far as the other cars listed, they are quite similar to this set up, even though each manufacturer does it slightly different.http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3089/2788065082_2381cf73dd.jpg

The Lexus gets a bad rap becaust the exhaust and the outlets on the valence don't match up. The Audi and the Lambo are exactly like the new California. Set back so the owner doesn't deal with exhaust drips on the $$$ cars. They still exit through the ports. No fake exhaust here. Just less maintainence.

Im not saying I wouldn't drive one, heck of course I would, its still a ferrari

but it just doesn't appear to be an "emotional" car. Ferraris are supposed to be about passion and everything done to meet that. This car just doesn't do it for me, it doesn't evoke the same emotions/feelings whenever I see ferrari in person or in pictures.

..plus it looks like a damn fish
