VA cops, hating on my exhaust

I didn't appreciate the blue lights tonight as I was pulled over for an illegal exhaust. My evo2 is not "illegal" in that it's 50 state legal (has even an added resonator), but of course, VA's laws have to be different or give some leeway for that cop to bug me.

 

I forgot the exact law I "broke" but I'll get the ticket from my car and post it. The rookie pig caveated it by saying it wasn't a clearly worded law.

 

Maybe it was some grapefruit shooter bias the cop has? Oh well, the exhaust was a great deal, but maybe I'll look for some new cans.

 

If any of you have been hated on, let me know how it went. Im new to VA's legal system. Maybe this is no new development, but some of my buddies with "tame" wrx's and sti's have had issues with their exhaust too. Maybe a crackdown? Or maybe just bad luck.

Any aftermarket exhaust is illegal as worded in the code. This can also include an oe replacement exhaust from midas, mieneke, or similar. Any exhaust that raises the audible volume over the factory is also illegal iirc.

 

VA troopers have been cracking down since last year on small stuff like exhaust and tint.

they're actually getting rid of those ridiculous fines in VA. just back to those "normal" fines. $1700 for DUI, etc. no extra $3000 fine. You gotta fill out some paper work if you did get fined and paid. Who knows how long its going to take to get a refund, if any.

My experience is that its ALL of the east coast. I will say that the DC area is by far the worst ive ever experienced, but all the NJ, NY, MA, NC, SC, FL, and PA drivers I run across down here are asshats as well.

I know. All suck, but somehow VA is noticeably worse.

 

Out of NE, Maine is surprisingly civil and devoid of LLBs. Must be Canadian influence - drivers in Maritime provinces are very decent.

Just my two cents.....I have had a run in with the law in VA and let me tell y'all something......by federal law YOU are allowed to monitor police frequency’s; radar and any other radiation emitted by the man. You guy's must know that Federal law overrides states..... Now I got away with it I can't remember the exact by laws but it’s with the FCC....I just spouted off some bull sh&* like “by laws FCC code fc-4309” and he bought it. so I know it must be true and he knew it but didn’t know the exact law himself…… so I role with my radar detector every ware in the communist wealth of VA.

Mine is nice and quiet on the cruise, but Loud As Hell opened up. And it's real hard to tell it not stock exhuast when it's dirty, but when it's clean all that polished stainless stick out from under the bumper like a sore thumb.

Troopers can/will give you shit for anything they can easily identify as aftermarket. If SPT is dealer installed and you can prove it, i would imagine they MIGHT back down, though there was the case of the guy in fairfax that had to go to court for the hood scoop on his sti being illegal

Guess I will have to avoid driving may car through VA then. I have a greddy SP2 on my wagon, not real loud but not real quiet either. The locals here don't give it a second look.

Actually, the worst state for cops is Ohio. Pretty much all of them are on a power trip and will pull you for whatever they feel like.

 

I got a ticket once for doing 10 over when I was doing 10 under. Ohio is just one huge money making trap.

I had the same exhaust ordeal with my previous car in MD. I ended up having the law faxed to me from the MD State Police person himself, highlighted on the page.

 

I thought that there would be a decibel law like most states, but pretty much in MD ANY aftermarket exhaust is illegal, as stated here before. I asked why exhaust shops are allowed to make custom exhausts then, and the cop said "There's lots of things that are legal to make but illegal to own".

 

Cuz that makes sense...

1. Radar Detectors - They can no longer confiscate as owning one is not illegal, just using one on the road. They can write down the model and SN. It is an equipment violation, not moving violation. Just a fine, no points.

 

2. 80+MPH is wreckless in VA. If stopped in a 65MPH zone, be apologetic and the trooper will often reduce to simple speeding.

 

3. Troopers will contest exhaust mods, especially when loud. Mine is far from stock and no issues yet.

 

4. Tint will be verified with a meter. Max of 80% transmission (or 20% blocked on front door windows.

 

5. Racing is automatic wreckless, night in jail, and impounding car. Fines usually high enough to force sale of car.
