Good all seasons that perform well in snow/ice?

I really want to get the re92's off. I've driven in some light snow with them for the first time and I was less than impressed. Are there any good all season tires that work close to/just as good in the snow? I'm trying to kill 2 birds with one stone, even if I have to pay a little extra. Right now I don't want to spend the money on a dedicated winter set. Decent 17" snow tires for the subie cost more than I paid for snow tires and wheels combined for my civic.

I have the Conti Extreme Contacts, bought them just before winter and have had them 3 months and about 4,000 miles. Am in Kansas City, we've had about a dozen snow/sleet/ice events and in snow these are pretty damn good. They are very good in the wet but I had a spin out on some black ice...but thats black ice. For about $96 per tyre they are the best value you can get. Snow, sleet, slush and the wet...they can't be beat.

Wait, I shouldn't use these in the summer? I need a set of tires that I can use all year round.

You can certainly use them but you'll cook the cold weather properties out of the rubber to a certain degree. They are fine dry tires and great in the rain. The Bridgestone 960s might cover the warmer months a little better, IMHO, but not handle winter slop as well as the Contis.

MY new contis make my car ride like a buick....or a boat...i'm not sure which??!!!

AM i running too much air pressure? i think i'm 35 all around

Plus now my car pulls to the right at sped > 55mph....did the shop mess up balancing ?

Hvnt had any snow since last wk so cant comment yet on snow performance

wow 40lbs...sounds a lot, but i will give it a try.

There are 2 issues, slight steering wheel shake at higher speeds and slight pull to the right. I will re-visit them on the alignment, which may explain the pull but does that also account for the steering wheel vibration?

And it snowed yesterday and i was very impressed in the 2" that fell yesterday. I was going 55-65mph and feeling very confident doing so. Helped my braking ability as well. Next mods will be suspension and that crazy deal from KOP on brakes.

Thx all

the ContiExtremes are a very hard tire to balance. i would make the tire center rebalance the tires.

I've not had any balance issues with my set but if a vibration suddenly appears with a new set of tires then a re-balance is definitely in order.

didn't read all this, but recently decided which a/s to go with after the winter:

Yokohama Avid W4S

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Yokohama&tireModel=AVID+W4S&vehicleSearch=false&partnum=245WR7W4S&fromCompare1=yes&place=0

took a while to decide between these and the Continentals. but through TireRack's road and track tests, these were higher ranked, though not in the snow area:

The Yokohama Avids are good tires but there are always trade offs depending on what your looking for. My vote went to the conti's as they had better ratings in deep snow and ice.

The rankings for these Yokos only have >.3% of the reported miles compared to the Contis. Just bear that in mind.

I must say that having two sets of tires really changes the way you think about tires selection. I don't know what A/S I'd get for year round use (my Contis are for winter only). The Yoko looks good for summer but it is also "only" W rated.

I wanted the Contiextreme's but i was strapped for cash and ended up going with the General Tire Exclaims UHP and they have worked awesome in the snow for what they are. Uber cheap too.
