The Motorcycle Thread V1 (CLOSED)

Recommended Posts

A holy thread revival, but it's not every day Harley Davidson presents a new engine:

It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it’s big news. We’ve all learned the great names—Knucklehead, Pan, Shovel, Evolution, and Twin Cam—and now there’s a new one: “Milwaukee-Eight,” which tells us this new engine, like Harley’s legendary board-track racer of long ago, has eight valves.

Displacement is 107ci (1,750cc) or 114ci (1,870cc). The 2017 touring models get these engines first, but this is the Big Twin that will, no doubt, power Harley-Davidson’s future.

Nice on them. Sad they have to engineer it to be just a little out of balance so the bloody thing gives a little shake like the old ones.

If your going to move on really go there. Don't keep reliving the past.

Never been my cup o tea either. They had a chance to get it right with the VR and just failed there too... Spend a load of money with Porsche to help make a race engine and never take that package to market. Buy Buell then let it rot o the vine and drop it like a bad habit.

So spank you Willie and Hardly Abelson. I'll keep my 80's tech and keep rolling right past the herd.

  • 1 month later...

Got back on two wheels when I got tired of my 100 mile round trip commute on the ever worsening I-5 in the Seattle area. Riding a motorcycle allows you to get first on, first off for the ferry across Puget Sound, so I can do 36 miles per day instead, avoid the stop and go interstate entirely, and actually look forward to my commute!

Started with a 2016 KTM duke 390. 306 lbs dry weight and a spunky 44hp single was a ton of fun!

Began accessorizing it to better meet my needs with the KTM powerparts comfort seat, Barkbusters handguards, Cyclops LED headlight with yellow filter, Denali D4 fog lights, and a few other things.

One morning riding to the ferry at about 4:45am a deer jumped out in front of me and committed suicide. Hit it in the head at 65mph and just damaged the fender and hit my left leg. I was fine, the bike was fine, the deer was not. Got lucky on that one. Had I been going just a hair slower I'd have hit the deer broadside and the outcome could've been a lot worse.

Well I got about 1400 miles on the thing before someone stole it while I was at work one day. Never saw it again...

So I stepped up my game a bit with this:

A 2016 Triumph Thruxton 1200. Completely different riding experience. It's a little heavier than the Duke, but has over double the power. I went from feeling like a high school hooligan to james frickin bond. Everything about this bike is amazing. The torque, the sound, build quality, and the classic lines. I've already got the brown leather passenger seat and passenger pegs so the wife can ride, and getting heated grips put on when it

goes in for the 500 mile service next week.

Nice Thruxton... I've been drooling over the Thruxton R. Might pick one up as a 2nd bike in a couple years. ;)

I thought long and hard about whether or not to get the R model, but it came down to which one I liked the looks better. If I could get the competition green (BRG) with black forks and springs, I'd have got the R, but otherwise I couldn't see spending the extra for parts I really won't need. If the R model had more power, a wider rear tire, etc, I'd lean more towards it though.

Sold my Ninja 650R and picked up a Suzuki DL 1000 V-Strom. Decided to repaint the plastics white and added some waterproof cases + LED's. Fun bike so far, but I have not taken it off road yet.

A friend let me ride his Triumph 750 vertical twin in 1979. The vibration made my hands go numb and took half an hour to go away after I was done with the ride. Why would anyone want that?

But I bet it looked cool.

New Triumph's have a much better counter balancing arrangement. So they evolved.

They just went from a 360* firing crank to a 270* for 2016. The 1200 motor in the thruxton feels a little lumpy (in a good way but that could be the exhaust) when accelerating, but completely smooth at idle.

Mayhaps, but I was responding to someone that said Harley wanted vibration out of their new engine. Stupid.

A co worker daily rides a 2015 sportster and it vibrates so much that the metal belt guard cracked and broke off at one of its mounting points. Can't see how that's desirable but they give customers what they want!

And charge them twice what the Japanese would charge for a similar but better bike. I must say that I think people that ride Harleys are stupid.

I once asked a cop that I was friends with how he write a ticket for excessive noise for car exhausts or stereos when he rode a Harley that was generally louder than either. He said that in good conscious he never stopped anyone for that becz he knew he Harley violated the noise laws.

I get ya...

There are no issues riding the KZ based motor all day long. That base design goes back to the early 70's.

It just baffles me why (hardly ableson) people must follow the herd and insist on a flawed design.

How am I just now finding that we have a motorcycle thread on here? Any been drooling over one of these for the past year and will probably get one when I graduate in April.

I should have held off and purchased a wagon instead of the spec.B

Apparently they are pretty reliable bikes, but the whole lifestyle around the brand really turns me off.

I see that you're in Ollala. Do you ever see this bike or wagon rolling around? He's a good friend of mine and is also on this forum as Kalien32.

Can't say I have. I'd have noticed a wagon with the JDM bumper for sure. Small world I guess!
