Maybe next time you can jump start your car like a genius...

WTF? I'd like to see that. Guess I should make sure to carry a wool cap.

The car is at the dealer.. I told them it was having "Electrical Problems" They are still trying to figure out what's wrong with it.

There really weren't many sparks but the cables got hot.. but nothing that really seemed out of the ordinary. When I realized what had happened I was actually surprised more bad things, noises, or smells didn't happen.

Next time I ever have this problem I am just going to be a man about it and roll start the car. (Yay manual transmission!)

I will keep you posted on what the dealer says.. I actually feel kinda bad because I am guessing that they are likely as confused as I am as to what exactly is broken. I am guessing the ECU is dead though like you guys have said.. I am just wondering if the ABS, Air Bag, Stereo, Climate Control... ECU are all dead too.

You'll usually get one big a$$ spark the minute the clamp touches the post.

OBAMA......One Big Ass Mistake America!

When you say you checked the main fuses (the big ones under the fuse cover by the battery) did you uses a multimeter and check for voltage on each side of the fuse or did you check them visually?

If you only checked them visually, I'd recheck them with a multimeter if I were you.

99.9% of the time when you do that (reverse polarity) you blow that main fuse and nothing else.

my idiot friend did this (reverse the jumper cables) to my 2006 GT a few months back because my other idiot friend left the reading light on when I let him borrow it.. I called Subaru Roadside assitance and we had to put it on a flat bed and take it to the dealer. When I got there they said something along the line of the "main fuse" being blown. It ended up costing me about $26 for the fuse.

A friend did this to my old POS Ford Escort back in the day... he put one of the ends of the jumper cables to the radiator support and the resulting sparks did look like welding sparks. There was a little burnt paint and what looked like welding spatter on the radiator support... The car was fine aside from the already dead alternator, though...

How did you make out mcwiggin? Did you hear back from the dealer yet?

go into the main fusebox in engine compartment and you should see a main fuse (some call it a jumper) it should be 100A w/ clear window and 2 small phillips screws, one on each side, securing it to the fuse box.

salemen do it all the time at my dealership, always the main fuse.

No word yet from the dealer... I checked the main fuse visually.. there was no noticeable disconnect. I figured seeing as it is rather large and 100amps if it were to blow it would like be something visual.

I will post as soon as I hear from the dealer.. Hopefully I will hear from them in the AM

I heard back from the dealer.. Apparently its just a fuse somewhere in the ignition system. The guy on the phone called it a Maxi-Fuse. They believe the reason my battery died in the first place had to do with a recalled part. He didn't say what part but I am sure I will find out when I get the car back later today. They just wanted to run some diagnostics to make sure everything in car is okay. In addition they are giving me a new battery.

All in all not to bad seeing as this is costing me 0 dollars.

Glad to hear everything's getting take care of, with only a day or two without your LGT!

The dealership is in Western NY. I won't say which one till I get my car back. Apparently there is a recall on the ECM's for my model. The issues has to do with the ECM leaving the main fan indefinitely or sometimes just turning the fan on at random times even when the car is not in use. Usually they fix this with a software update and replacement of the fan relay but the dealer is ordering me a new ECM overnight just to be sure everything is okay. They are also replacing my car battery free of charge. All in all I have been really impressed with the fact that all of this is at no cost to me. Hopefully I should be getting my car back sometime tomorrow (assuming the ECM gets in tomorrow.) Of course I will keep you posted.

As far as the welding spark.. nope didn't look like that at all. Just a normal spark.. Maybe a little bigger than normal but nothing that seem crazy big. I think in order to get a big spark like that you would need something that is high voltage. Car's are relatively low voltage but can be very high amperage. (Starting you car = ~500 Amps at 12 volts || Power to the wal socket in your house = ~15Amps at 120 volts)

yeah thats a common recall that i've been seeing a lot of. make sure you bring ALL of your keys in cause when they install the new ECU you will have a new imobilizer code also, so your gonna have to have ALL of your keys reprogramed.

damn service writers forget to tell customers all the time and they get pissed off.
