Jedi Pimp
What does the spacer washer do between the upper perch and the tophat? What happens if you don't use it?
AWDxBOOST
you car will fall apart if you take it out i dunno, maybe its to allow slight rotation without backing the bolt off
rao
It spreads the load of the strut to a wider area of the unibody. Is it critical? probably not. Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
Waxiboy
i think it is required for USDM struts and not for JDM
Guest
i think it is required for USDM struts and not for JDM Correct for Bilsteins, but not for Ohlins (which come with their own spacer washer).
SubiGT
Removing it or changing it's thickness will alter front ride height, correct? Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
Speedracerx
If you're referring to the conical washer that fits between the strut and tophat, it allows the strut to rotate when you turn the steering wheel. It provides a face for the bearing in the top hat to seat against. If it is not there or installed upside down, you will have increased resistance when turning. NutBucket
^^^ What he said. First time I was swapping springs I reassembled in the wrong order and the top hat was very hard to turn. Reassembled and it just spun freely, like it did when it came off the car.
PGT
Dave...I've got a pair of spares if you need them.
Waxiboy
Now I am confused. My Bilstein HD came with a washer. Does that sit between the nut and top hat or spring seat and top hat?
PGT
between spring seat and tophat. The Spec B/JDM tophats have a bearing in them. The USDM tophats do not and use the cambered washer instead. I'm not sure why the HD's would come with them - are the flat, or thick with one flat side and the other cambered?
Waxiboy
it is about 1mm-2mm thick. i did notice that it is not perfectly flat...maybe i should put it between the spring seat and top hat. i'll try to assemble one tonight (minus the spring) and see how it goes. so there is no need for a washer between the nut and top hat? Guest
JDM Bilsteins do not take any washers in front. Strut, then spring perch, then top hat, then nut and cap. Done.
PGT
as long as you have the JDM/Spec B tophat that has the bearing pressed in, you don't need the spacers. I'd surmise that using USDM tophats is ok as long as you use the washer, provided the rod on the Bilstein clears the hole that is.
