RustyShackleford
Just re-installed the re-worked I-85 harness, after using tiny jewelers screw-driver to try to re-bend the little spring tab contactor inside the barrel of the pin (the pins from the the original connector). So far, so good. You can kinda tell if you've bent the contactor back where you want it, by peering into the end of the pin with a magnifying glass and test fitting it on the radio's pins for good friction. This oughta be part of the walk-through. If your connector is giving you poor connection then replacing with a different connector sounds like the way to go. If it doesn't hold up, I'll make a Jeromes-type connector; looks like Mouser might be a good place to buy the parts if you can't cannibalize them. This catalog page looks like what he used: http://www.mouser.com/catalog/637/1445.pdf Or DigiKey, where I THINK the correct part numbers are: WM1114-ND and WM1577-ND. leggtnut
Here are the photos of the mod. Jeromes, I have confirmed that 2 old style CD-Rom Audio cables with that type of connector fits perfictly and look identical to what you used. Also, re-reading the thread again, I need alittle more clarification on yours: did you leave pin 8 disconnected? and if so, any ill effects? leggtnut
Ok, so I got my cable done, I think. If I get some time tomorrow, I will take some time to install it. just still trying to figure out how I am going to connect Pin 8. Jeromes
I would guess that you could just place a pin with a wire in pin 8 of the new connector for the radio, then splice that wire into pin 8 of the harness. If you can find a small wire that would fit into pin 8 on the car harness you could push that into the car harness.

If I get some time tomorrow, I will take some time to install it. just still trying to figure out how I am going to connect Pin 8. I'm not quite comprehending how you're doing it (something about "CD-ROM audio cables", what the heck is that ??), but the way I did it (just re-working the existing connector) is that I snipped the green wire going to pin 8 and then installed a dis-connect pair (spade or bullet type, from RadioShack). Then, when I re-install the harness in the car, I just connect that disconnect. Did the same thing with the aux-enable wire, going to a wire spliced into the ground wire that goes to the single spade lug on the back of the HU. The heads-up way to do it is to run the aux-enable as a 4th wire to the jack. But you need to find a jack which will connect that wire to chassis ground when you plug something into it; I can't find one, despite extensive search at partsexpress, digikey, and mouser. Maybe that's a reason to spring for the Legacy or Impreza aux-in kit, if the jack in those kits does it. No biggie though.
leggtnut
the cables that I am refering to can be found at just about any computer store. they have become pretty much become obsolete now days though so some stores might not carry them anymore. the shop i got mine from , they had not sold one in over a year. will have pics later. leggtnut
Ok. Just finished installing it. Works great. On my test, I didn't connect pin 8 and didn't knotice anything. I connected pin 8 and didn't knotice any differance. So I left it dissconnected. Here are some pictures. I connected pin 8 and didn't knotice any differance. So I left it dissconnected. Here are some pictures. Looks good. Pin 8 may just affect the illumination brightness, something about the dimming function; nice to know if can be disconnected and things more or less still work. Looks like you put the aux-in jack by the cup-holders, but then you show your device mounted up by the cubby. Why didn't you put the jack in the back wall of the cubby pocket ? leggtnut
dimming didn't seemed affected as well but don't remember if I checked that, but if that was it, I don't care and will leave it as is. That is my GPS and that isn't tied into the system, at least for now. May tie it in later. But I have my Zune 120 connected to it and that sits either on the passanger seet or in a case logic between the seet and console orginazer. If you look closer at my pics, You will see that I don't have a cubby pocket. I have the STI Guages there. SVXdc
Pin 8 on connector i85 is for the "dimness cancellation" feature. When you turn on the headlights, the illumination dims on parts of the radio and A/C displays. But when you press the BRIGHT button on the clock they go back to full brightness (as if the headlights were off). Pin 8 is the wire that tells the radio's display to go bright. With that pin left disconnected, the radio's brightness is determined only by the two illumination wires on the 14-pin harness. ADDED: The Bright button went away starting in 2006. On 2006-up, when you rotate the dimmer knob all the way up, it clicks to activate the "night dimness cancellation" function. Daedalus
OK I definitely want to do this! My only question is what models of the MY2007 carry the proper head unit? Any Limited models?
leggtnut
Ok, played with the illumination on mine. No change. Lights on, lighst off, turn illumination nob to full low, to full bright, to full bright all time and it works great. (06 don't get the bright button, the knob does all the work for us) Ben (2014 Outback SAP w/ eyesite, 2014 Tribeca Limited, 2006 LGT limited sedan) Subaru Ambassador PNW
RustyShackleford
Or DigiKey, where I THINK the correct part numbers are: WM1114-ND and WM1577-ND. Wanting to make my own connector (for the I85 8-pin plug for connecting aux-in to the P204 radio), after I had loose connection issues re-working the pins in the existing connector, I ordered the above digikey.com part numbers (WM1577-ND 4-position housing and WM1114-ND contact), which I tracked down using the info Jeromes gave in post #269, and it looks like they'll work nicely. However, I couldn't help notice that there are some other contacts mentioned in the DigiKey catalog, a "high pressure" type meant for high-vibration applications (which I think our's qualifies as). The contacts are WM2612-ND and the associated 4-pin housing is WM2603-ND, and I ordered these too. Unfortunately, the opening (for the mating pin in the radio) is too small in the WM2603-ND. But the WM2612-ND contact fits the pins very nicely, and I'm thinking it may be the very same contact that's in the existing connector (I was test fitting this in my old HU, so I don't presently have access to the existing harness connector). Unfortunately, the high-pressure WM2612-ND contact does not fit into the WM1577-ND housing. Anyhow, maybe this will be of some help to someone. These Mouser fittings are INSANELY complicated, and the catalog isn't that much help, but the relevant pages are: http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T091/P0178.pdf and http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T091/P0179.pdf Also, the parts are extremely cheap, and DigiKey has an option for cheap USPS shipping, if anyone is interested in trying any of this. But of course, if you have that computer connector people are describing lying around, or if the existing connector works for you, why bother ... goneskiian
OK I definitely want to do this! My only question is what models of the MY2007 carry the proper head unit? Any Limited models? Why? You planning on stealing yours? Just kidding. That's a good question. I would bet the GT models have the same HU. I'm pretty sure they had aux in's and Satellite radio. There are many references here to the model and part number. You could also read up on http://www.cars101.com for the functionality you're looking for. Cheers! Scooby2.5
Hey goneskiian, I just purchased this in the marketplace. RustyShackleford
Hey goneskiian, I just purchased this in the marketplace. Now All I need is the cable to go from this to the back of the Radio. Curious, does this thing have 4 wires or 3 wires ? I'm wondering if it is designed so you attach the "aux enable" wire to it as well, so that it connects that wire to ground when you plug something in ? (Most people who do this mod simply ground the aux-enable AT the HU, so the HU will select "aux" even if nothing is plugged in.
Scooby2.5
I paid about 40 shipped for it but here it is new guys. 92174AG05A $30.77 $22.52 Console - Center console - Pocket Pocket - 2007 I am not sure if it will have everything but I wouldnt be suprised knowing subaru. If you had this cubby pocket, your Aux Unit 86257xa10a part plugs right into it. So if you ordered this and it didnt have the aux in part you would need the previous mentioned 86257xa10a Now to find the wiring that goes from this to the Radio. The guy I got this from is going to go back to the wrecked car and try to pull the harness for me. Rusty on the back of the AUX in module it has a white connecor with 5 pins 5 wires. The wires out of it run down to another white connector that has 7 pins in a 22 pin connector. 2 of the wires out of the aux look like they are spliced with tape around them and go to the 12v accessory plug. The same color wires also run to the 22 pin connector. RustyShackleford
Rusty on the back of the AUX in module it has a white connecor with 5 pins 5 wires. Hmm, maybe 3 of the wires are the stereo audio and audio ground, and the other two are the aux-enable and chassis ground (which are shorted together when a plug is inserted). Speculation ... zmarko
Anybody have a good picture of the Back of the 07 radio where the AUX in plugs into the radio? Not sure where it hooks up actually. The connections between an '08 and an '05 are essentially the same, there's a 2nd larger harness on the '08 (I'm guessing for NAV and the Aux in). Here's an '08 radio. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/zmarko/IMAG0042-1.jpg And here's an '05 radio. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v319/zmarko/IMAG0043.jpg

(I also decided to just go with the jazzy mod instead of the hugely expensive 07 radio.)...i would have pulled the radio out of this 2.5i limited, but it was already gone:mad:
