mschmidt
All, My 05' LGT has been hit with the Cooling Fan Relay TSB so I took the car to my local dealer and they have ordered me an ECU and relay... apparently. The dealer is surely not top notch... it is like they did not want my business? I finally convinced them that both ECU and relay had to be replaced after much arguing. They said fine, we will order your parts and call you when they come in... likely 3-4 days. Two weeks went by with no call so I called them up and they said we are all set just come in. Argh. Thus, I do not have the most confidence in these guys so I wanted to physically access the relay and ECU before my appt and mark it with a sharpie or something to make sure it really was replaced. The dealer did not even mention that I need to bring all my keys and that small little metal tag for the swap. Very concerned here. I found a picture of the relay here, see below. So, that one should not be a problem. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/mschmidt/obxtrelay2.jpg As well, I know were the ECU is from the picture below, but what is the easiest way to access it? Let me know guys. Thanks in advance. My appt is Monday morning at 7:15 am. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/mschmidt/Passenger20Side20Apart202.jpg Mike
rao
Just pull the carpet back and loosen the 3 10mm bolts that hold it in place. Although if the dealer can't figure out how to remove the ECU I would go elsewhere. ilh
The dealer will not just give you the parts to do it yourself under warranty.
Scooter
Which dealership was that, if you don't mind me asking? If you want to feel more comfortable with the dealership, you could try Suburban Subaru in Troy: they did mine Tuesday. They knew all about the TSB and went ahead and ordered both parts when I told them my cooling fan was running, no problems at all. I did not have to bring the metal tag; just the keys. mschmidt
rao, I didn't say they could not figure it out, I said that I just wanted to make sure they actually replaced both ECU and relay. ilh, I did not mention this anywhere... please read again. The dealer will do the work, I just wanted to verify it was done. Scooter, Dunning Subaru in Ann Arbor. If it doesn't work I will consider Troy. Thanks for the input. I'm glad you had no problems. mschmidt
rao, Pull the carpet back from the front or back (closest to front of vehicle or rear)? Near the seat, there is a break in the carpet there as well. Let me know. Mike
rao
From the front. You can just barely get enough moved back to get access to the ECU Rob IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR CAR YOU SHOULD NEVER DRIVE IT
TSiWRX
^ +1. Removing the three trim clips (plus one at the side, I believe) that holds together the passenger's side under-console trim panel may make taking up the carpet easier, but shouldn't be required. Once you remove the three 10mm bolts that hold down the protective metal overlay plate over the ECU (it'll be in the same location as pictured above for the ECU, just overlying it), you'll have a straight shot at it with your marker. pdw
Jeez, I didn't realize the ECU was there. Now I know why the passenger's side has less legroom. Frankly, it seems like a dumb place to put it.

Scooter
One other consideration, if for whatever reason someone *needs* to do this themselves: AFAIK, the new ECU does not come with any map on it. So the dealership installs the new ECU, then uses their Subaru Select tool to upload the latest OEM map. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. In other words: SEARCH before you post! mschmidt
Well... I found some time to mark my ECU and relay today with an "X". Very easy, maybe took 10 minutes total. Some pics are below. I will let you guys know how it goes at the dealer. Thanks again for all your help. mschmidt
Well everything went smooth at the dealer and the fan issue has been solved. I had a chance today to check and make sure they replaced the relay and ECU. Turns out they actually did what they said.
