Nothing major in any of the links below, but I definitely remember reading a less-than-flattering review of the Spec B somewhere. I think they commented negatively on the red interior, the rims, and the suspension. Does that sound like the one you read, Limeade?

Doesn't really matter. The LGT is the car I bought after I promised myself that I'd do more research on my next vehicle before purchasing. I think it worked out pretty well (couldn't find an '05 Forester XT Premium 5MT :icon_bigg ).

You idiots are aware its illegal for a site to post scans of a mag right?

As for the issue, that would be the CURRENT issue of August on page 101

You might be able to get away with posting vacation pix.

Just came today...article was the first thing I read. I thought it was fairly accurate based on what I have read here by others. Face it, there is not a perfect car that will satisfy everyone. It is always a compromise in more ways than one.
It is still ugly.

I didn't notice that the subsequent page had an article titled: "We tried to build a better spec.B" The article was an attempt take a regular limited and make it better than a spec.b by spending the price difference(minus $2k for NAVI) between a spec.b and a limited on suspension mods...

reading this article pretty much cemented in my mind a suspicion I've had that there is something personal against Subaru (sans Forester XT)in the past few years. The sentence that did it for me was... "Taking advice from Subaru-owner Web forums such as http://www.nasioc.com and www.legacygt.com..."

They are here and reading. That means they are:

Enjoying writing things that piss off the Subaru fans so they can run to the forums after publishing and gloat over it.

and/or

Were big Subaru enthusiats who were unhappy with the "premium" direction Subaru has taken and are grading Subaru harder for it"

and/or

Have that kind of "Honda/BMW is the best... let's pwn the shit out of this Subaru wannabe brand"

Or some combination of the aforementioned.

With titles like "Moving up warrants tougher comparisons" for the previous spec.B article... That indicates that the article at hand was not objective. They say for the same money you might as well buy a BMW... nevermind that comparably equipped the BMW is $10k more... or that they nit picked the spec.B when the BMW broke down, skitzed out, and had to use braking results from a prior test because they failed. Sounds like a trait i'd like in my sports sedan.

The outcome of this "building a bettger spec.B" ended up with a 6feet improved stopping distance (on 17" shoes vs. 18" for the spec.B) and an equal skid pad. So in the end they didn't build a better anything... it had better body control yes... but at the end of the day the spec.B with all of its roll would still whomp the hell out their beloved 325, TSX, and Accord around a track. LGT gets the damn job done.

I had my copy waiting for me when I got home. I agree that C&D comes off as biased. The problems they mentioned also were indicative of flogging the hell out of the car (bad spark plug @ 30k mi) but they make very little mention of just how hard the car was driven. One of the counterpoints mentions how dirty the light interior got after one Michigan winter... 3 words for you All Season Mats. 2 more words, Carpet Shampoo.

There is one blurb in the article about the interior being above reproach and a few very gracious comments throughout the article but most of the coments are back-handed, coming after a pretty big slam about this or that.

I just don't get it. Comparo after comparo C&D excludes subies when they are tailor made competiton, yet they praise the XT and WRX time and time again.

Exactly... that car was abused... and all weather mats were my thoughts exactly

The WRX fell from grace after 2003... just about the time Subaru announced the "premium" strategy... which i feel they've backed off on because they haven't mentioned it again.

They make several references in the article and sub-articles to the WRX.

the comparisons featuring a WRX are what i was referring to. I just re read the article... they say the LGT is not a true sport sedan... yet they say the V6 Honda Accord is . The end of the article says don't buy an LGT, buy an MS6 or the Accord V6.

I think they read the bad stuff on the forums and regurgitate it in their articles. I have nothing but loathing for C&D.

OIC, the last sentence makes a feable attempt to say they're going to miss the GT... but yeah, an Accord is a performance sedan... right.

It's C&D. They flog the crap out of all of their test cars. It's part of their job description. And the better performing it is (subjectively and objectively), the more forgiving they are in their reviews of a car's quirks or gremlins.

Look, as much as I love the value and fun of my LGT, BMWs have generally been much better performance cars. And when you're not paying the repair bills (car mags almost always dismiss problems on long term tests and say the warranty covered it) and you have a fleet of press cars to use when another car is down, the car mags don't realisticly assess cars for reliability. But as long as they test performance subjectively and objectively and give me the information on mechanical issues the car had on tests, I'm happy. I smart enough to come to my own conclusions based on their data.

As for a Honda V6 as a sports sedan, I've never driven one, but Honda does a lot of things right with cars (CRX, RSX, Prelude, Civic Si, etc), so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. But I'll keep my LGT, thanks.

Perfection in the eyes of C&D is a BMW. They seem to consider the BMW the benchmark. They said the Spec.B was not competitive at $35,000. But they don't expect perfection from a WRX at $10,000 less.

Great, I didn't pay $35,000. I didn't even pay $25,000. I paid $23,000. For that price I don't expect perfection.
