Dear Subaru, "about the Baja..."

Has anyone ever considered how many of these would have sold if they had been a 2 door 2 seater similar to the El Camino or Ford Ranchero? They could have been built on the Legacy wagon. Couldn't have been nearly as ugly, either.

Despite the looks being the same, I think Subaru would have done so much better if they had kept the Baja true to the ST-X concept: The 'switch-back' with rear glass that lowered into the back seat so that it could fold forward and create a truely open back instead of the little 'pass-through' that the Baja ended up with, a dual-range 5-speed transmission, the under-floor compartment in the bed, built-in 110v power inverter, 650w Mcintosh audio, and Eaton supercharger.

There were 3 real problems with the Baja:

1. Very little ad time for promotion, no one to this day knows what the hell one is.

2. Sorely lacking in power for the N/A version.

3. The garrish 2 tone paint on some, especially the horrid bannana yellow was a total turn off.

Overall as a package they offer a lot at their price point.

If they would've offered the H6 as a base motor, ran some ads showing their versatility, and offered more tasteful paint options IMO they would've had a real winner on their hands.

the car needed to be lighter... way lighter.. and it would help if the towing capacity was higher, way higher.
I fail to see weight as the issue, they are only 3600 pounds, for a mini truck that is about right...an S10 in 4WD configuration is about the same weight.

Power was the issue, or the lack therof. A 165 HP 4 cylinder is not enough. It needed the H6, plain and simple. That alone probably would've boosted sales a good deal.

And towing, well subbie does not have a HD drivetrain available so that would've never happened. I don't believe for one second lack of towing capacity is what killed it.

It was a paridy of the concept vehicle. the ONLY improvement they made over the concept vehicle was to get rid of the canvas roof and replace it with a moon roof. Those mickey mouse ear lights on the roof of the car in every publicity photo made the damnd thing look goofy.

The concept car could fit a 4x8 piece of plywood in the bed, the production car had a wee bit less than 4 foot width bed, plywood would no longer fit, even hanging out of the bed. They killed the bed with the pass through instead of the fold down seat/window. They gave it the previous model years 4 speed transmission when a 5 speed was available, and used an underpowerd engine in it. Even the turbo version was underpowerd. I loved the concept, and hated the production version. What a dissappointment.

I had the 04 baja turbo and loved it. It was the best thing on the road, except when it was in the shop. the 4EAT w/ sportshift was just not suited for the power of the turbo charged engine and the mountian I have to climb everyday. So it got lemon'ed and i now have a LGT. I would not of even looked at the LGT if they would have advertised it and updated it to the new legacy design. I just couldn't have any bad to say for the design as a whole. I know that they gave a lot from the concept to keep the unibody construction the same as the legacy wagon so hence no fold down seat/window and a few other things. I agree that the only option of a 4 cylinder was the failing point of the baja. They really needed to put the H6 in it and then it would have sold a lot more. Now they are going to loose out of a market that they had and give it to honda with that pos ridgline. I spoke with a tow truck driver the other day and he was laughing becuase he got his 7th call that week from people locking their keeys in the in/bed trunk and pyling on the stuff in the bed. And spoke with a owner a couple of months back and he said that the bed is a joke, the tail gate is just too short to be of much use. ok that is enough for my .02 worth.
