I just joined yesterday... I'm considering trading in my 01 Celica GT-S for the LGT. Three winters in a FWD sports coupe has finally gotten to me and I don't want to purchase a beater car. The Legacy GT seems like a prime candidate for a new car since I don't want to downgrade in the performance department aand I definatly need AWD. Have any of you guys taken advantage of the introductory lease I see advertised?
in your case it's an up up up grade. You'll finally experience someting that has been missing during your three year ownership of the celica - torque. and lots of it!
Agreed... My celica only puts out power in the 6200-8000 rpm range and since I drive a 4spd it's almost never in that range. The climb from 0 - 40 is soooo slow it's embarrasing. Good news is I called my insurance company today and I'll be saving $175 every 6 months by getting rid of the celica and switching to the LGT. :D

Yeah, I saved money going from my wrx too. My gf had a Celica GT and it wasn't a bad little car. Nimble handling, not such an awful ride for a sporty car, and amazing gas mileage (like high 30's). The seats were back breakers on long trips, though (though comfy seeming around town) and they are a bit pricey for the performance compared to competitors. If they knocked the price down a bit though they might still be competitive...(in a class w/ say the rsx) btw...moderators seem to be spreading like flies around here! :P

It's also way too much $$$ and insurance to be practical. Unfortunatly Toyota didn't realize this early on and due to poor sales the Celica and MR2 have been officially retired (production ends mid 05) :( On a side note, I should be test driving a silver 05 LGT limited 5MT on monday or tuesday. :) It's been so long since I felt real power and a manual transmission I'm getting excited.

First off, Welcome to all the new folks. not long ago I wandered in, lurked a bit, and then started making comments... My Wife and I tested an MR2 a couple of years ago, and the fact that you can't even put a single suitcase in that car was what ultimately ended that. It was hilarious, a mid-engined car, so you think that the front hood will have some space, you open it, and it is a big plactic panel, with a small hatch in the middle, with a spare tire in it. there is less than a cubic foot in there otherwise. I figure there was quite a bit of unused space under that big plastic cover, but who knows? We went with a miata instead, and although it won't hold much, it will get the two of us out of dodge for the weekend, with a bag or two in the trunk. The celica and MR2 both were very nice looking cars. The celica, particularly, but were wrong wheel drive for me to entertain the thought. Too bad they stopped making the All-trac, on the previous version of the celica, as that may have been a really nice setup. The car that could do it for Toyota, if anything can, would be the proposed new Supra, that is rumored to be styled after the ultra-rare late 60's 2000GT. With an updated turbo inline 6, or maybe the 4.3 Lexus V8 (not historically correct, like an I6) RWD, and a modern interpretation of the classic car's styling, it could be a sports car hit, as long as it is priced similar to the 350Z, and RX8/proposed 7. I was unfortunately too young when the last japanese sportscar boom went bust. European sportscars are great, but were more expensive that the pricey japanese sportscars in the early to mid 90s. They aren't any cheaper now. I am glad that there is a real, affordable competitor to european sport sedans, in the Legacy GT, though. the G35 and IS300 seem like the only other two (Acuras are WWD) that are direct competitors to BMW/VAG/Merc/Jag/VolvoR, etc. and the Legacy GT is the most affordable, and one of the fastest cars in that lineup. That is a great thing.

The winters up here have really soured my taste for fwd and I was considering buying an older used legacy for a 2nd car. Ultimately I've decided that I should cut my losses while I can and just drive one all-weather vehicle. Not wanting to downgrade, the 2.5GT is the logical choice. Test drive tommorow !! :D As for the next supra, I hear that it won't be called a supra and may not even be released under toyota (lexus m ore likely). I also heard that the powetrain is a radically new engine most likely V10. I also hear that this car will be VERY expensive... more in league with vipers and such........ but we all know how internet rumours go

Fantastic writeup IWSS, nailed it in one. The GT offers and is competitive on so many levels with the Euro cars and its about time that the Japanese stepped up. Im sure there will be only more to come in the future. wunderkind, I have to agree, the Celica is OK, nothing to write home about. So does that mean that Toyota are now stopping production on the Celica and MR2? Thanks for the info too lowendfrequency. So come on Guests continue the trend and sign up, your membership to the site is well worth it and takes roughly 60 seconds to make it happen. Adam.

It sounds like a Lexus super-sport in the Viper, Porsche 997, Aston Martin Vantage V8 class would be a ccompletely different car. That might do well for Lexus, but Toyota needs a halo car, to help people notice Toyota for more than camrys and solaras, especially if they are canning the Celica and MR2. The backlash for Lexus being Toyota's pet luxury brand, and brand engineering in general, is that john q. public doesn't always make the connection from Lexus back to Toyota. A Lexus halo car won't automatically generate more sales for the Toyota brand. The Scion TC probably won't either. People who know nothing other than what car they think looks cool, don't neccessarily know that Scion, or Lexus for that matter, are made by Toyota. I can see a up market lexus and a mid market toyota platform-sharing sportscar pair. (like the 350Z and G35 coupe, but spread further apart) Toyota's history of re-interpreting other car company's products should point to the fact that Toyota will want to play in the market that the 350Z and RX8 (and hopefully an upcoming RX7) have resurrected. I wouldn't mind a Subaru playing in that market, either. Perhaps an off-shoot of the next WRX STi, in a sexier coupe shape, and independent, nicer interior. Even if it would be a limited production model, with a coupe body on the next impreza's hard points and STi drivetrain, it would be a nice alternative in the Pac Rim sportscar market . Maybe a WRC homoligation special, in the idiom of, but much better looking than the british market Ford Focus RS. Maybe even like a brit Ford Escort RS Cosworth, but not necessarily mid engined.

The Lexus brand has increased in popularity over the past few years as a top Japanese brand that can be compaired to the likes of the big German names. Based on this, Lexus maybe be looking to retrofit their image but putting a few fast cars in its line up. This could be because TTR (Toyota Team Racing) is solely concentrating on the F1 and doesnt want to look or be involved with street tuning at the moment. Just a thought! Any new members have thoughts on this ? Adam.

TRD has definatly adopted Scion as it's new commercial platform and offers them the aftermarket the celica community never had. As far as the shift of the "new supra" to lexus I think it mostly has to do with cost issues. No-one wants to pays $70k for a Toyota.

The price of the Supra has moved up and up depending on the MY and the specific engine. I would have thought that TRD would have seriously branded the Supra as theres. Then again when the GT-R comes out, Im sure it will be in around the same sort of money, if not more so there is obviously a market for high-end performance based Japanese Supercars. Adam.

Hi all! After looking around a bit I decided signing up yesterday! I'm currently looking in to getting a new car for our family, my father will stand for the dough and he will have it on weekdays, but the car will be mine for weeknights and weekends. We're driving a Renault Laguna 3.0 V6 Initiale at the moment, an adequate car, but nothing that gets you all giddy... The competiton is between the BMW 525i, the Saab 9-5 Aero, the Saab 9-3 Aero Performance by Hirsch, the Legacy 3.0R and the Legacy Spec B. My personal favourite is of course the Spec B  , but my father isn't 100% about going back to MT yet, soo... But we will see what happens in the next couple of weeks...! Regards, Henrik Andersson - Sweden

Hi all, I've been lurking for quite a while and finally decided to sign up. I test drove a GT LTD 5EAT wagon last week to take advantage of the 25$ visa card Subaru was handing out. figured, what the heck , kill a little time , drive a new car and make a little money. Well, now I really want one of these cars damnit. I was mildly interested before, but after driving the car I must say I felt like a dog in a frisbee factory. The lag wasn't bad and once in the turbo it was a lot of fun, particalarily playing with the sportshift mode. I've never been remotely interested in Subaru's before, but I must say the Legacy styling and performance is spot on for me. I've got to figure out if I should pick one up now or later as a new house and another baby are in my near future. Well, anyway just wanted to say hi. Regards, Brian
