Gone over to the dark side. Remember what they say about the difference between a Porsche and a porcupine.

never heard that comparo before but i'll take a gander.....one has pricks on the outside...the other on the inside?...how mean....i'd like tyo own a 911 turbo someday...hell for all i care u can replace the skin with a beetle's body....i just want that powerplant/drivetrain.

actually it would be so kewl if subaru would make a 911 inspired 2 door coupe with a 2.5 turbo rear/mid mounted engine and actually call it the poor mans reliable porshce....that would just rock.!

Ironically, I interviewed with Porsche Cars North America last week and have a shot at going to work for them. More irony since I'd never own one, but I'd just assume see people running around in Porsches than in Lincoln Navigators and such. I just love cars in general. But all too often, I find that Porsche owners (and a few others) feel that they own the road as well after dropping the scratch on the car.

i hope you are friends with a porsche mechanic

i likely wouldn't want to own a porsche or ferrari if it was given to me due to the astronomical maintenance and repair costs

People who buy Ferrari's aren't too worried about paying for repairs, and they often have a backup car or two, or 5!

911s can be surprisingly reliable if you drive them and service them regularly, the major problem with the 996 911 is the RMS which if it leaks is a major repair ($7-10k fix!) Hopefully they fixed it with the 997, but only time will tell.

I would like to get a nice 993 911 (last of the air cooled Porsches-destined to become a classic) but will have to do right now with our 2006 C6 vette.:icon_bigg

I love my 993. Sure it's not the fastest car on the road today, but the visceral feel of an air cooled 911 is unmatched.

As for maintenance, I do all my own routine maintenance on my 993. Having said that, I submit that I spend less on maintenance than John Q Public spends dropping their Japanese/domestic car off at the shop for all routine maintenance. And don't believe the urban legends. 911's, especially the air cooled ones, are not that hard to work on for the average home mechanic. And if you know where to source parts from, those can be just as reasonable as any other make.

As for the 996 RMS, the fix is either a simple change of the RMS or if out of tolerance the whole engine needs to be replaced. And yes, a new engine runs $7-10k for a 996.

On the Porsche forum RMS was only $800 to fix - unless it messed up the engine. Local P dealer said a new engine is only $6,500. This issue (if it comes up) will be covered under warranty.

Hopefully you never experience the issue. But that warranty is a nice safety blanket.

New engine is $6500 but don't forget labor at $85-110 an hour. Not sure how many hours the book calls for on an exchange.

Man I'd love to have your new car, but I'd get introuble so fast. I mean I've been nabbed speeding in my GT twice now and this thing is no speed demon at all. I'd be racing all over the place, but with the biggest grin on my face. I'm glad you got the warranty though, expensive cars breed expensive breaks

 I love how people think that they are telling him something he doesnt know..

I think they are voicing the justifications they have made to themselves as to why buying one is a bad idea, that way they arn't bummed out that they can't afford one.

Me? I just leave it at "Ohhhhhh pretty car!"

Congrats!!! Awesome car...someday, I'm gonna own a P car...just drove a Cayman...wonderful car to drive...

You mentioned you were also looking for a M5...I have a buddy who is selling an 2001 M5...beautiful car with about every mod possible outside of a super charger. The thing can hang with a new v10 M5. The original owner took it to Dinan but the result was not fast enough for him so he sent it to BHS...it's probably pushing over 500HP at the crank....but it's still no Porsche ...Enjoy the new car!

Nice choice, mjcdriscoll! I actually briefly considered a '99 C4 before I got the LGT, but I figured it wouldn't really be a practical daily driver for me. I found quite a few in the $35-39K range, so they weren't too far out of line with other cars I considered: 330xi (probably used), Jaguar X-Type (also probably used), Passat W8 (new but discounted).

The 996 C4 is actually kind of my dream car. Yeah, it would eventually get expensive to maintain, but I know a good independent Porsche mechanic that would be as reasonable as I could hope for. Hell, I doubt if it would be much more expensive to maintain than my A4 was.
