Would such a problem contribute to a feeling that the steering is loose driving straight at reasonable speed? Would it also make the steering wheel vibrate a little when breaking?
It should not. If the front axles were coming that loose, you would get some shuddering potentially, but you should also be hearing some unpleasant sounds as your wheel bearings are self-destructing. The shuddering when braking is more often caused by warped brake rotors - something Subarus are known for. It could also mean that one of your wheels is a little out of balance. As far as the loose steeting, the things to check are: tire pressure, tie rods and ends, ball joints, steering rack and busings. Either way, if it is seriously bad (maybe try driving another similar car to see if it exhibits the same behavior) you should go and have it checked. Maybe one of the the professional mechanics can weigh in on this. - Dan

174 ft.lbs is not all that high, although it is probably the highest torque spec on the car. If you are using a 1 foot wrench and you weigh 174 lbs you can get there without trying. If you want to try this yourself, watch out because because there should be a portion of the bolt's sleeve that is dimpeled so that it cannot loosen. You have to bend that back first and then make a new dimple with a punch when you are done. If you don't know whtat that is, don't mess with the axle bolts! :D

As for the steering - it's OK now after I dropped the pressures from 38 to 30 and rotated the tires front to back. I think the tires are the problem - I hear some stories that the Potenza RE050As are prone to tramlining. Perhaps.

Some new news on the axle nuts...dealers will shortly be receiving the VIN information on the affected vehicles. The concern only effects cars built immeadiatly after the last Indiana plant downtime.
All the Dealers scheduled to receive potentially affected units should have already been notified by their respective Regions. Note: Any affected units in the SNE (Subaru of New England, Inc. Serving Conneticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont) and SDC (Subaru Distributors Corp. Serving New York, Northern New Jersey) Regions were inspected at their respective Port facilities before being delivered to dealers, so NO Dealer activity is required.
So if you have an early car, or bought your car from the SNE or SDC Regions there is no need for concern. The rest of you should hear from your dealer if you were sold one of the effected units. More info if/when it becomes availible.
