QuickJack SLX or EXT for '08 Legacy?

Apologies in advance, I am not the Legacy owner but I'm trying to buy a gift for my partner who is and I know nothing about cars :(

 

I have researched QuickJacks extensively and need one that's compatible with his 2008 Legacy. I tried to use the QuickJack measurement guide to determine which jack to purchase but am still at a loss.

 

If anyone has a suggestion on these two models please let me know!

I was considering the EXT just to be on the safe side but they are back ordered everywhere which is why I'm trying to figure out if the SLX will work.

I took some very rough measurements.

Tire spread 3" off the ground (as instructed), I got around 88". They say subtract 2", so 86".

 

Lift point spread. This one was tricky, I wasn't really sure where to start and stop. I stayed within around 1-2" on each side of the front/rear pinch welds.

Maximum 63", Minimum 53".

 

Ground clearance, forgot to measure, owner's manual says 5.9"

 

Curb weight, couldn't find in door jamb, google says "3,275 to 3,553 lbs"

If I were in your shoes, I would spend the extra $50 or so and get the EXT. Not only thinking about the legacy when I say that, just seems more futureproof if you will, if you or your partner gets a different vehicle with a wider lift point spread.

 

Edit: I forgot the OP said they don't know much about cars. The attached image basically shows the area that I measured from, where I said the pinch welds.

FWIW, I use two 3000lbs floor jacks when I do things under my cars. Having two, makes lifting the whole side or front or rear a good distance off the ground. Total cost, appox. $200

 

And, I can crawl under the jack from the sides while its up. Yes I use stands if getting under the car.

 

With the quickjack you can only get under the car from the front or back (?)

 

With four floor jacks ... I could lift both sides at the same time, for less money... just thinking out loud...

Fair points that you can't get under the sides with quickjacks, but no big deal imo.

 

I've lifted my car from the front and back with my 2 HF jacks, and that was a little obnoxious and made me uneasy, since my car seemed like it was teetering side to side, and really wanted to tip to one side, not super safe before getting jack stands under there.

 

I've never attempted raising and lowering my car with 4 jacks, but that just seems annoying and like it might be a little unsafe. I know you put stands under after, but I just mean while lifting I would be uneasy. Plus, it all depends on how much room you have around your car, maneuvering jacks in front of, behind, and on the sides of my car can all be a pita in my garage. I don't know, I guess I just wanted to defend the OP a little because I think this is a good gift idea.

When I remove the tranny, I have lifted it high enough about 24" using four floor jacks and blocks of wood on the jacks and then the big 6 ton stands from HF.

As long as you bring the jacks up together, walking around the car, as only I was doing this...again you only do this once, but its still cheaper in the long run.

 

How often will you be using those $1400 lifts ?

I bought a two post lift and use one at school. I don't ever want to use a floor jack & jackstands again. Being able to lift the car so you don't have to bend over is such a great benefit

 

Those are sweet, but you have to have the overhead space to lift the car that far.

I have these. They're good for some things, but a pain in the ass for others because they take a bit of setup each time you use them and you can't get in from the sides, so it's annoying in a garage where the back of your car is close to the wall (I always back my car in). I was going to use them to change clutch in my Mustang, but I didn't because I needed to pull transmission out and I wanted to be able to pull it out of the side of the car

 

Great for brakes and suspension, great for exhaust, great for body work, but not so much for major work under middle of the car.

Something else to keep in mind... If whomever you are buying this for also likes to fabricate things... making the extension plates are quite easy when you look at how they are designed. Just some square stock, flat plate and a welder and you can make your own extenders.

Buy some hockey pucks too. I use their hard rubber blocks and then put a hockey puck on top of each block to give a little bit more height and it protects the blocks from being cut.

 

Home Depot had them for the best price online when I purchased mine. I would look there first rather than buying direct.

OP's very lucky partner here. I just wanted to follow up and let everyone know I got these. It was a complete surprise, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks to everyone who helped steer my partner in the right direction.

 

(For the record, the SLX fits great, and I actually have 2005 Legacy GT Wagon, not a 2008. And no, sadly, it's not a manual. But I still love this car, and have owned it since new. I don't drive it as much as I used to, but I'm keeping it around to learn how to wrench, and to pass along to my kids next year).

 

I've been a member on LGT.com since 03/2006. I don't post much, but read a lot. Shortly after getting the car, I did the jazzymt audio input mod, using the instructions here.

 

About a year and a half ago, I used this site to do the Dual HVAC Double Din conversion and replaced the original head unit with the JDM HVAC controls and a Sony Android Auto head unit (which, made the car feel so much more modern, I love it!).

 

At the same time, I used the instructions here to replace the rear tailgate wiring harness, and install a backup camera.

 

Shortly after that, I replaced the original exhaust with JDM Wangan Axle-Back Mufflers that I bought from a member here. (They sound amazing!)

 

I've done the front brakes and oil changes, and the rest of the maintenance has been done by a local Subaru specialist, or the dealer.

 

Now that I have the Quickjack, I'm looking forward to doing more of the maintenance myself. Up next are the rear pads and rotors. After that, I'm planning to replace the front and rear suspension with a JDM Bilstein GT Rev B set that I bought together with the Wangan exhaust.

 

Eventually, I'd like to figure out to replace the uppipe (hopefully before the cat disentegrates and takes out the turbo).

You have to measure your vehicle(s) to see if you need the ext. I ended up needing the ext version for the 2010 Legacy because the pinch weld lift points were so far apart. It still fits under my 2003 VW Jetta (its close) which is a short car.
