How costly is a timing fix?

Recommended Posts

Just wait to hear back from your email or phone call, and ask them what options you have.

Some people will drop in a 2.0l JDM engine and I think you can get around the AVCS, buy a used motor and get it sorted with the parts you have, or buy a new OEM shortblock, head work and assemble. Don't rebuild the motor unless you really trust the guy doing it I think is the consensus, and bc a new one is $1800 shipped (+$250 for master gasket).. You have options, but they all have their risks.

AVCS? What is that. How likely is it the long block is still useable? I found a complete motor for $3500 for a 0 mile remanufactured. Would that be easier?

Go to Google, and type in Subaru AVCS.

Here's a motor, but idk anything about these guys. You're gonna have to do some work and figure out your best options based on what you can spend and who you can trust. Since it's safe to say you don't understand the cars very much, I'd say find someone to give you the best advice. Then learn more about the cars on your own.

Whoops, wrong motor previously. Here's the one you'd want.

Thanks. I ended up buying this motor for my car. It came out of an 08 spec b with 77000 miles. Getting the heads machined and new gasket kit. Also buying the Rev9 intercooler. The motor was $2800 and $150 for shipping. I'll have the car back in 2 weeks. Thanks again for all the help.:spin::)

Also going full synthetic and removing the banjo bolt on passenger side of the motor.

The OP barely could afford to fix the car in the stock form. Now he gets suggestions for injectors, giant turbo, etc....

Well, good luck.

I've bought parts from Peter Donato @ PMPAG before. Good guy to deal with.

Did you not read the entire post?

The first half was obviously a joke. :spin:

Yeah, this thread makes my head hurt.

The motor was compression and leak down tested, and had a new timing belt installed. I feel like if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Also, if that motor had any coolant running through the oil, it was running through the turbo too. Might need a new one of those since the motor doesn't come with a turbo and turbos prefer oil to water for cooling.

Technically, these turbos are designed and engineered for both :)

They just don't like it when the two mix, or one is substituted for the other. That never ends well.

Still trying to get my mind around what happened with the 2-4 cylinder breakage? :iam:

In my opinion I see no point in aftermarket intercoolers either for a daily driver running < 18psi. The stock intercooler with BP kit supposedly works better than anything else with the other components properly isolated too.

Stock turbo - stock intercooler - stock intake..

You're buying a longblock with relatively low miles and getting heads machined??:rolleyes:

Yes. Getting the heads from the old motor machined.

Maybe I am missing something, but if your going to be pulling the new motor a part and using the heads from the old motor, why don't you just new buy a new OEM short block?

I already have a new turbo ready for it. Getting the aftermarket tmic because I don't trust the bp kit and the fact that I am going to eventually get a vf52 and catted down pipe and an e-tune. Already invested like I said and planning on keeping it for a long time, so why not.

Just in case there is an issue with the heads on the newer motor and ease of mind. The mechanic told me that the long block wasn't salvageable.

My BP'd stock tmic has 191k miles on it, 120k miles of which boost was increased. That and the stock tmic is literally better.

Hey, good luck with it all. Wish you the best. Unsub.

Unsub?....my tmic already leaks were the plastic is crimped by the fins. Would that work? I'm not trying to just have a stock everything I want more HP and want to make this a show car. Just got a promotion and now have the means to do so. WTF is up with all the negativity on this forum.

There isn't negativity so much as guys that have been there/done that from what I have seen in my short time here. When people ask questions, get answers and then proceed in a different direction all together the elders here take that as one of those "I told you so's" or something like that.

You do what you feel is right with the car, it is yours and it is your money. That said, don't come back after spending more or doing something over or something not working because you went your own route and not expect razzing of some sort. It's the internet....you need to filter out the good, the bad, the ugly and figure out your path. There is a ton of good info here. Good luck with the car.

That's the thing I haven't gone in some opposite direction. I even bought a motor that was suggested. I see plenty of people here on this site went aftermarket for plenty of parts, but I'm getting Shit for not keeping it stock. I also don't have the means to work on it myself or: lack of garage, tools and knowledge. So I have to put faith in what my mechanic tells me and take the advice from people here. It's not like I have a Subaru specialist right near me. It is half way across the state and that the car is my dd and need it back asap and don't have the time to get it towed here and there for people to look at it. I cant get a a new car due to credit and I don't trust private sales so I'm stuck with what I got and I'm fine with that. I love this car, its one of the best I've had even for being used and costing me money. An an now that I actually have a car that I like I want to upgrade it a bit and give it a long life on the road and turn it into a beautiful piece of machinery that can dust a muscle car. I'm not some 50 ur old man contempt with driving a fast car like a Prius and not personalizing it. That's not what these cars are about. That's not what this site is about. I've seen multiple super up leggys on here and I'm going to be one of them. I'm sorry if people get butt hurt cause I didn't follow there every suggestion. I frankly don't care. I'm using this site for some friendly advice and to see how other people have modified their cars. If you want my car to be fixed a certain way and look a certain way, then by all means send me a check to do so.
