EVO IX is nice but the new EVO X looks really interesting, Mitsu is trying to go totally upscale while keeping the amazing performance. An attempt to lose the econobox image of the current Evo. Either way the cars are great performers and better looking then an STi IMO. More choices are just better for us consumers to force other car makers into providing affordable sporty cars.

I got an EVO 8 over an STi, mainly because none of the Subbie dealers in Maine (where I was living) would let me test drive one, even though I had a 32k check in hand. With the new '06 styling of the STI, I think the EVO 9 is better looking, but that is of course subjective. I test drove an '05 STi and Legacy GT LTD Wagon back to back and ended up liking the Leggy better. If Mitsubishi would of brought over the EVO wagon, then I would of bought another EVO. I knew I wanted hatchback functionality in my lastest car purchase.

I put close to 30K miles on my EVO in 10 months, so obviously I drove it as my daily driver and my daily commute for part of that time was 170 miles one way. The EVO was a very livable vehicle for me, mind you I was living in Maine, so it's not like I had to deal with city stop and go traffic. While the STI and EVO are similar they are very much different cars and the EVO is a more direct feeling and driving machine, those that appreciate that experience are willing to put up with the quicker steering, and harsher ride over the STi. The engine in the STi feels much stronger. As cheap as everyone says the interior appears in the EVO, it's highly functional and those seats beat anything I have ever sat in. The only problem I had in 30K miles was a frozen power steering pump, but that might of had something to do with doing donuts in a parking lot with an STi when it was -20 outside. I sold my EVO to a guy on NASIOC who now at 60K + miles has to replace the stock clutch and has not had other problems with the car that he's made me aware of and I asked recently, because I seriously considered buying an EVO MR this time around.

I never even considered buying an EVO until the last Subbie dealer manager I went to suggested I go try and test drive one. The end of the story, I bought the EVO that night, and he got flowers and thank you note from the Mitsubishi dealer cause I told them how I ended up at their dealership. My Mitsubishi dealer (Pape Mitsubishi in S. Portland, Maine) was the best dealership/service experience I have ever had in my life, they treated me with respect, were honest and insightful, and fought hard to keep my business, and the techs and service manager loved the car as much as I did.

The EVO is an amazing car for the price, just like the STi is, which one you prefer is subjective, but how can you bash either if you've never lived with one?

The Evo is one fast-ass racer wrapped in an ugly shit-box exterior. No amount of body kits or vortex generators can make it appear any more upscale than the Lancer.

But it is one serious performer and that is what people buy it for.

Well, the only real noticeable difference aside from the oval holes... is the lack of the pronounced front lip at the bottom of the fascia. The lower side intakes have a much more upright and rectangular shape than before.

Otherwise, it looks like a lancer, alright...

The thing is, why only box up a contender of a powertrain in a econobox exterior... Yes, have the Evo rally car thing going... But even subaru puts it's 2.5T motor in other cars, like our legacy...

Why don't Mitsu and Subaru put these hot AWD drivetrains into cars that look better? namely coupes. Even if they are sport compacts, coupes look better than three-box sedans.

I think that a re-think and diet for the Eclipse, with the Evo powertrain and a new 2.5RS Turbo with the LGT motor, each with the option to upgrade, the Eclipse to FQ-whatever, and the 2.5RS Turbo to a version of the STi. 2.5RS STI, or something.

Give the tuners something besides RSX, and Scion tC, and Civic FWD econoboxes to tune up, and a better looking alternative (cost sharing platform) to the Rally-ready Evo IX/X and WRX STi.

The Evo and the STI are left overs from when WRC required homologation cars. The last of the homologation cars included the Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Basically the manufacturer had to sell x number of cars in similar configurations in order to race it, I think it was around 500 at one point. These cars were subsidized by the company. They had a limit on how much it can sell for in order to keep cost down. But the company got around that by taking a loss on the car.

The reason why you see compact econobox sedans being chosen was because they are smaller and closer to the minimum size requirement. If you look at the current generation of rally cars, they are all based on compact econoboxes; Subaru Impreza, Ford Focus, Citroen Xsara, Peugeot 307(convertible) and 206, Skoda Fabia, and Mitsubishi Lancer. Really small cars like the 206 had a huge advantage over a larger car because they can use more of the road. These cars are designed for function over form. They don't need to be pretty, just go fast. If you look at the actual WRC Evo, it's pretty damn ugly. But all that was done for aerodynamics, most of which didn't make it into the production car.

Why don't you see these drivetrains on other cars, well they don't sell. Eclipse used to be all wheel drive, but they didn't sell. Mitsubishi had the Galant in VR-4 also. The only reason why Subaru is selling all AWD cars is because back in the early 90's they gave up on trying to compete with the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. They realize they can never match the Camry or the Accord so they need to take a different approach which was to go all AWD across the board.

Here's some links to photos of the current Evo rally car. Definitely not pretty, very functional though.

Mmmmmmm Peugeot 206 Rally car! I'd rock it all day long!

I like the look of the Evo....just not the price tag, or etiquette. I know it's the lancer, but I see a TOTAL difference (not just simple) between the Lancer (base) & the Evo VIII!

The MazdaSpeed 6 on the other hand looks promising... .but they altered the apearence from that of the standard 6.....and made it rather unattractive to me. It WAS the other car I was comparing to the LGT coming time to purchase. I chose the LGT... and I'm glad. I've read that the AWD system of the MS-6 is in fact NOT AWD... all the time like the LGT!

It is the disposition of men to desire that which he cannot have, hence my un-quenchable wet desire for Shakira!

LMAO, the EVO hasn't even hit the deck yet and here we are paying it out already.

Im more than sure that the boys at the EVO site are doing the same about the GT and WRX.

Ahh you just have to love the love affair that cars create.

No I havent. What I am capable of is thinking that some car other than a Subaru can be of value.;)

Now, now, thinking for yourself...that will lead to a slippery slope of independence, we can't have that in the U.S.

Seriously though, through all the time of mustang vs camaro bashing, we haven't much grown up we just switched the companies we're bashing about.
