blklgt05
Trying to decide on new tires, both size are 245/40/19, similar tread wear. I've had evo2 for a while and liked it, anyone tried the super sport? Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 OR Michelin Pilot Super Sport http://www.wheelspecialists.com/gallery/TireModel/53/55_large.jpg mod journal
FAILBOT
If those are the two you are choosing from, I'd go with the Michelin. I've had nothing but bad experience with hankook.
rapture
Def the michelin in that choice But i prefer the yokohama ado8 r
Ellesedil
My dad just put some PSS's on his Miata. He likes them so far, but I doubt he has much more than 1,000 miles on them so far.
Dujo
This is pretty much strictly a cost/benefit analysis for most people. The Hankooks are cheaper and not as good. The PSS are better and more expensive. The cheaper tire is still a good tire and many folks that want to keep themselves on a more limited (read reasonable) budget often get those and are happy. If you feel like you want to spend more to have one of the best, then PSS is your tire. In general, you can spend more and you can get a stickier tire, but PSS is going to make a pretty great combination of longevity, durability, and performance. It's up to you to decide if the cost is worth that. I run PSS. I'm due for a new set and I will probably just get the exact same tire. Note, the PSS does have a boring tread pattern, aesthetically speaking. Not that that has much to do with performance.

The PSS are about $200 more in total than evo2s. mod journal
Dujo
Honestly, you can probably be pretty happy on the Hankooks. It's a very good summer tire. Way better than any all-season (except in the snow, obviously, but I doubt that's a real problem for you in SoCal. Just don't take either of these to Tahoe in the winter). But the PSS is pretty damn great. If you've got the extra $200 burning a hole in your pocket, remember there's no better performance upgrade you can make than better tires (okay, maybe adding lightness, but are you really planning to strip the interior?) Edit: Tires is always going to be the best upgrade imo. Reading > me
fedaykin
(okay, maybe adding lightness, but are you really planning to strip the interior?) Weight reduction on your body? Lol Apparently PSS is the "best" road tyre, but good to hear you've had positive experience with the Hankooks. How are they noise wise?
FLlegacy
How are the tire weights? I am noticing quite a difference, IMO, between sizes and brands.

ibr_adam09
The last time I had Hankooks, I lost control and crashed the car.
FLlegacy
I voted Michelins, only because they are over .5" wider.
BBPeik
I have been happy with the Hankooks, but I did buy them because of the price. That and I did not have a ton of options for the 19's. I would go for the Michelins if the money is not an issue. My someday I will be done with it thread.
whitetiger
both tires are a compromise, and even though they are cheaper then the ones im gonna suggest, that compromise, mo makes them not worth their price. buy either the Bridgestone RE-71r or if you want more alittle longevity, the dunlop direzza Z2 star specs. either one will outperform in every way the tires you are looking at. HOYS
PSS have a treadwear warranty where most of the other tires mentioned here do not. Big thing for me.

I'm a little surprised to hear you say that. Obviously the re-71r is going to be a better performing tire (in terms of vehicle dynamics and grip), but that tire has a treadwear rating of 140 (edit correction: 200), where the Michelin Pilot Supersport has a treadwear rating of 300. Honestly, I consider those two that you mentioned to be an autocross or track use only tire for that very reason. I would expect the PSS to last significantly longer than either the re-71r or the direzzas. I hear you on the stones being the best performing tire, but it's gotta be expensive to keep replacing those if you are using them all the time on the street. What whitetiger really means here, OP, is that you want two sets of summer tires, both the PSS for daily use and then another set of re-71rs on another wheel for motorsports use. The Hankook definitely, its ranked at 10, but still receives good ratings. That's where I did my research, tire rack and multiple YouTube track reviews. I should have mentioned that tread life is a factor for me as the evo2 only lasted about 23k miles. PSS have a treadwear warranty where most of the other tires mentioned here do not. Big thing for me. Yup, no tread warranty on the evo2. I'm a little surprised to hear you say that. PSS should last way longer, there's a lot of choices if tread wear isn't important. For the best summer tires with reasonable tread life, looks like PSS would be the best choice. I've decided to go with PSS, I can do a brief review comparing the two after. Thanks for the input guys! mod journal

FAILBOT
I'll share what happened with my Hankook's. Bought them brand new before a 3k mile round trip. On the way back about 2800 miles in I crossed lanes on the highway and ran over one of those reflector lane markers. It tore a hand sized chunk of the tread off the tire at 70 mph at around 6 or 7 am with busy traffic. Had to change the tire in the dark on a busy highway with my wife and kids in the car. Scary stuff. Anyways, I thought it was a fluke and tirerack replaced the tire. Fast forward 2 years and only around 12k on the tires. I noticed by chance, cracking in between the treads on one tire. Checked the others and ALL were cracking! I had no choice but to replace them. What a waste and not to mention how unsafe. You may not have issues like that in a warmer climate, but no tire should do that. I wouldn't risk my family's or my life over a couple hundred dollars. dgoodhue
Checked the others and ALL were cracking! I had no choice but to replace them. What a waste and not to mention how unsafe. Some tire dressings will dry out and accelerate the dry rot/cracking. The aerosol and Armor All products would ruins the tires (at least the formulas from years ago did). I sparingly use any tire products on my cars these days and I make sure they are safe for tires.
FAILBOT
I didn't use any at all. These tires naturally did this.
dgoodhue
I didn't use any at all. These tires naturally did this. Tires should NOT do that after only 2 years. I would check the date code on the tires, someone may have sold you an old set of tires.
