GraceNote Updates?

Recommended Posts

  • 1 year later...
how is the database updated, via USB connection ? Where can databases be downloaded from ?

more importantly, can an owner do this on their own or does it have to be done by a dealer ?

I assume they are built into the car, or coming over radio or perhaps gps?

I get the pictures and I don't have Sirius activated or a USB-connected phone.

Others have noted they have a new soundtrack, star wars, and it is not matching correctly. But some of our older music does display the correct album art.

subaru's response about grace note.

Thank you for contacting Subaru of America, Inc. We appreciate you taking time out of your day to contact us.

The Gracenote database is designed to be upgradeable by a Subaru retailer technician; this function is not designed for a customer to use.

Although we don't currently have an available Gracenote update for your 2015 Legacy, our engineers are looking into the possibility of offering this type of update in the near future.

Thanks for the opportunity to be of assistance.

Do any of you know how to disable the car's attempts to use the Gracenote database? Here's why...

A). It does not work over Bluetooth, which I use the most (Spotify). Okay, that's not entirely true - sometimes it imports the artist picture (not the album picture) for very, very, very, very popular music, but I pretty much only listen to esoteric progressive rock, so it never works.

B). I bought a 128 GB USB stick, and converted all my FLAC files to mp3, and while doing that, I put all album covers into each album's folder as both "cover.jpg" and "folder.jpg" (just to be sure) and I also used MediaMonkey to load the album cover into the each file's ID3 tag. (So, I'm triple-covered). It works pretty well about 90% of the time, but there are instances where the Gracenote DB overrides my personal album cover that I loaded into the file's directory/ID3 tag, and it ticks me off royally.

I looked around inside my car's vehicle, audio, and general settings but I can't find a place where I can disable all Gracenote access attempts, because I want to be able to control the album art myself (for example: it might go looking for Gazpacho's "Tick Tock" album cover from its original release in 2009, but the band changed the album cover for the 2016 remaster, so I loaded up the remaster album cover into my directory/ID3 tag, so I don't want it to go looking for the old album cover in the Gracenote DB, if that makes sense).

Info: I have the 2016 Legacy 2.5i Limited w/ the 7" screen, sat-nav, and H/K audio system

Thanks!

Dogger_Dog, I have actually wondered the same since I also made a point of making sure the album art is in the ID3 tag, and there have been times it has been replaced with the Gracenote picture. I haven't found anything in the manual for disabling it at all, and I looked through pretty much the entire thing to see (but learned a couple new things while reading it!)

Thankfully I'm not usually looking at album art while I'm driving, but when I do glance down and see a picture of the band instead of the album art, it can be pretty disturbing... especially depending on the band! :)

Yeah, I feel the same way. In fact, not a week goes by that I don't learn something new about it. I also find myself noodling through the settings at long stoplights. Yesterday I saw a checkbox somewhere in the menus that was for enabling or disabling album art. I was tempted to disable album art, wondering if perhaps they mean disabling GRACENOTE's attempts to access album art, but the light turned green before I could make the change, and it won't let me change anything once in motion. So I'll try that, and if it works, repost the results.

Also, what's that little micro-SD card slot for above the tuner knob? I'm afraid if I open it, it will seriously mess things up. Is that where downloaded map data for the sat-nav system is stored or something?

Gotcha.

Also, I finally checked "Display album art," and it it enables/disables all album art, whether from the ID3 tag or from Gracenote.

Maybe my USB drive is too large (128 GBs, but only about 66 GBs full), but do you guys have latency issues with your USB source? It takes mine anywhere from 3 to 15 minutes before the full drive is available to browse or listen to. What that means to me is that my Subie indexes the drive every time I power the car on, and not saving an index file somewhere on the drive itself or wherever. It can be a bit aggravating to have to wait, especially if I'm just going a few blocks or whatever.

I also notice that I cannot power off the audio while the rear camera is in operation. If I need to kill the audio while it is on (only in reverse), I have to turn the volume knob down to "0" which isn't the same thing as powering it off. A minor nitpick, but I'm curious if others have noticed the same thing, or if it's just my car.

Tks.

I'm in the same boat, at first I'm like those are weird pictures. But... Slowly as a year went by, they start bothering you more and more, until they start driving you crazy lol. The pictures are hard to describe, most of them look like backyard shots of popular artists, not even album covers, backyard shots of the artist themselves... Some of the pictures are boarderline offensive! Don't understand why they can't just get the art from the mp3s.. Or let you update/hack the gracenote db to have your albums.

Sorry for reviving an old thread but since Google brings this post up when trying to figure out how to update the Gracenote database, I thought I'd tack on what I've found.

The latest Gracenote databases can be found here for download:

https://content.subarunet.com/snet/business/service/forms/audio_downloads.htm

Extract to a FAT32 formatted USB drive and use the "Gracenote Database Update" function in the radio's settings. Hope it helps..

Thanks briandoc! I'll give this a try over the weekend. I doubt it will fix anything, but it's worth a shot.

Also, I'm going to try one last thing for my USB drive (again, a 128 GB about half full). Currently inside each album folder I have the cover art saved as two files: "cover.jpg" and "folder.jpg." Sometimes even that doesn't work. HOWEVER, I noticed the other day I was listening to a song where the song name and the album name were identical, and just for that one song only, the album art pulled from my USB drive properly, and not from the Gracenote database. So my theory is this. Change your actual mp3 file name to look like this: "Album Name - Track# - Song Name.mp3" My theory is as long as the actual album name is the first part of the song's filename, it will pull in the album art properly. I discovered this because that's how bandcamp.com's downloads are formatted, and it worked like a charm for an album that is only sold on bandcamp and there isn't a snowball's chance in hell Gracenote would ever know about it (it's from a band my realtor plays in).

I'll circle back here if it works.
