Pantheist
I have an 05 lgt limited, and I'm sick of these low profile tires. What's the smallest size wheel I can use that will clear the stock brakes? Would a 15 or 16" wheel fit?
Underdog
17" is the smallest that will fit due to the GT brakes. You could downgrade to 2.5i or Impreza 4pot/2pots and run 16" wheels, but that would be cutting off your nose to spite your face. What is the trouble with stock-sized tires? Pantheist
This is my first winter up here (nh) and the roads are pretty bad now that it's over(ish)-it seems like whenever I try to avoid a pothole I hit three more. I was thinking tires with bigger sidewalls would be less susceptible to damage.
lockmedic
If you hate low profile tires, I think you have the wrong type of car. If you really wanna run 15" or 16" rims, pretty sure you can find someone with a 95-04 more than willing to trade brakes and wheels with you. Personally I think that's like saying "ugh. . .I hate my GF's big firm tittays!"
Underdog
I live very close to the MA/NH border and have had 17" winter wheels on my Legacy for the last eight years without issue. Go with a 225/45-17 over the 215/45-17 and you will get a little more sidewall and curb protection. No clearance issues, especially with a mild drop or stock ride height. Moderators BarManBean Posted March 28, 2014 Moderators Share Posted March 28, 2014 You can buy my outback brakes when they come off and run 16" wheels You could also try running outback sized tires, 225/55r17. Not entirely sure if they would fit with stock LGT suspension or not. Underdog
Yeah, likewise - I'll swap the GT brakes off yours and onto my OBXT. I can do the labor. LMK. The Crimson Dynamo
Pantheist
Haha thanks everyone not really looking to downgrade my brakes, but I'll definitely be getting outback tires next time- I didn't realize they'd fit. Any particular brand you guys recommend?
Underdog
OBXT tires will be too tall for the LGT because of the lower perch on the front struts. 225/45-17 is the way to go. What are you looking for from your tires? The Crimson Dynamo
Pantheist
Sounds good, I'll write that down. From most important to least: durability, wet traction, comfort. I listen to music whenever I'm driving so road noise doesn't matter at all.

Underdog
Do you need snow capability at all? The Crimson Dynamo
Pantheist
Snow doesn't hurt for the random out-of-season snows, but I'm definitely going to get dedicated snows before next winter anyway so it isn't a huge deal
Underdog
225/50-17 is about 5% taller than stock. It might fit but I don't think there is a lot of benefit for the risk. One could spend days weighing all the pros and cons of various fitments and brands/categories of tire; it doesn't sound like the OP wants to mull on it all that much. He just want something that works. The Crimson Dynamo
digger47
I use 205/50/17 for snow tires.
Pantheist
So this is probably a silly question, but I've never messed around with wheel and tire sizes before. I can use the 225s on the same wheels without it being a problem, right?
JmP6889928
I use 205/50/17 for snow tires. ^^^^This. What digger said. 205/50-17 gives more sidewall flex=smoother ride=less potential for wheel damage=less cost per tire=narrower tread profile for snow and winter driving=better grip and traction=happier driver...LOL...
