Misfitofmusic
I have had my Legacy GT for a few years now and a few months ago I started hearing some weird noises in the transmission while driving. The car has 78,xxx miles on it. It seemed to drive fine in all gears, I just heard some interesting noises on acceleration and deceleration. I took it to a transmission shop and was told I needed a new transmission and was quoted around $5,000 as a rough estimate. I did not want to spend that much and didn't really believe I needed a whole new transmission because it seemed to drive ok. I decided to get a cheap beater car and work on the Legacy myself. I drained the transmission and found some metal chunks along with very metallic looking gear oil. Well I think I found the issue.. It looks like the bearing that the Transfer Drive gear sits in cracked causing the Drive and Driven gears to have too much play in turn shearing off some teeth off the gears (explains the metal chunks). I am just wondering if anyone else has seen this before or know if it's a common issue. I drive the car fairly moderate but I am a little hard on it at times, it has never been raced or anything. Any input is appreciated!
Kevjohn
Can you explain the noises that you were hearing? My XTs trans has been making some noises as well and I'm not sure if its just because of the cold snaps we've been having this winter.

Misfitofmusic
Kevjohn the noises I was hearing are hard to explain, I wish I would've recorded them. It was never consistent and would usually happen on acceleration and deceleration. The sound was very distinct almost like a metallic whirring noise. liljohnson I was amazed at the quote I got too, considering all the guy did was take it for a 5 minute test drive and told me I needed a whole new transmission. Max Capacity
These 5mt's have always been noisey. The decel noise is the most one talked about after a LWFW is installed. I have learned to coast in neutral down hills on the back roads most of the time. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD). BoozeRS05
I've been driving mine with a distinct whirring noise on accel and decel, which I'm assuming is the same issue you have, and I've been driving it for over 20k miles (@130k miles now). Previous owner said it was there for ~20k miles before I bought it too. The car shifts smooth as silk, even in the cold, no issues whatsoever, but noisy. I do have a SMFW and OEM WRX clutch. SO, I bought a used LGT trans last fall for about $900 with the plan that after the winter I'll be swapping them, and opening mine to see the damage, fix, and resell. OR, I might just ride it out, and see how many miles I can suck out of this trans till it shits the bed. Then swap in the used trans and see the damage. Sounds like the exact noises I have in my XT (150kmi). I also have some type of LWFW. Very noticeable on accel and decel, you can just hear it, or something during coasting. 40mph seems to be the loudest during acc/dec.
Max Capacity
Also, you may want to ride in the back seat and see if the noise is coming fromt he rear end. Before my rear diff broke, I thought it was the tranny making that noise. 305,600miles 5/2012 ej257 short block, 8/2011 installed VF52 turbo, @20.8psi, 280whp, 300ftlbs. (SOLD).
