  1. clutch, lifter buckets if out of spec, reseal the engine--front and rear main seals, cams, oil pan, anything else that's leaking, EGR valve and thermostat. full timing set including water pump, unless it's very recently been done. check the radiator to make sure it's still in good shape...likely is, but would be a pain to get everything back together and rip it apart. any hoses that look cracked/broken, and the turbo oil lines have a tendency to corrode. for funsies you can also do an STi cam swap if you're planning on going for power at some point, and can swap the front sway bar for a beefier unit if you want to, engine's already out so it's a quick swap.

edit. a lot of the stuff to do is just preventative stuff since the engine is already out and takes basically no extra labor to do it now instead of in the future. if your seals aren't leaking then it's not *necessary* to do, but it's a million times easier to do a rear main seal with the engine out than it is to do it in 10k miles when it starts seeping and you have to pull the engine or trans again. same for clutch and all of that fun stuff.

  2. in my eyes...for 3-4k it goes two ways depending on what i was looking. first option for most power is i'd just get a turbo back exhaust, upgraded intercooler and stage 2 or dyno tune depending on what's around...possibly "stage 1" clutch, but people go back and forth on that one and would depend on the state of your current clutch.

the other option is daily driver status...stage 1 tune, cat or axle back exhaust, konis and lowering springs, front and rear sway bars, and either a big brake kit or good rubber and wheels if you can afford them/need them. that'll really tighten up the handling, and still sound good and provide plenty of kick for a fun DD.

any tune on these cars give a pretty solid kick, so i'd personally roll with the DD status build, but that's just my opinion...mpg are gonna be totally dependent on your right foot, i end up around 24-25 with around a 30/70 true city highway split...so not good, not bad.

  3. what's the car guy's car meme? used brown manual diesel wagon? well i got 80% of it. wasn't expecting to buy a new car but this big brown slab of sexy popped up with some minor issues(all but 1 already fixed within 3 hours of getting the car home) for a price i couldn't pass up, so i bit the bullet. 2012 jetta sportwagen TDI with the DSG and no pano sunroof, the exact spec and color i wanted, just was shocked to find one so soon. engine is dry as a bone and runs flawlessly, same for transmission, DPF and egr replaced a year ago under warranty(which expired in september, which is disappointing), timing belt done ~10k miles ago, and newish craptacular tires that will be...fine...for a commuter. returned 39 mpg on the ~120 mile ride home without a hitch...well, except for the tow hitch on the back:lol:. happy to have a real wagon again, and though i'll miss the TL forever, i'm happy with the new purchase. just needs a full detail since the interior and exterior are both disgusting.

  4. the ranger's gonna be hybrid on their next refresh, but the maverick is going after the urban and dense suburban crowd that doesn't have the room for a full size truck but still wants the utility of a bed to haul their 6 bags of mulch back to the house twice a year. it also gets the eco-minded people on board that it's a small truck that gets good gas mileage, so it's a worthy compromise if you can only have 1 vehicle that you can still get a truck and not destroy the earth. fleets are eventually going to be picking these up like hot cakes too...instead of using little hatchbacks for deliveries and such(autoparts stores etc), you've got a 40 mpg truck that can haul a bunch more.
  5. finally had a nice day where i had no plans, so i installed new pads and rotors front and rear and a fresh oil change. brake fluid was in good shape so i just left it. went with OE rotors and powerstop z23 pads. used those pads last time and i like em, good bite, quiet, and relatively low dust, can't ask for much more. not a bad couple hours work this morning...makes so much difference not having the shimmies under even light braking like i had before.
  6. interesting...i took care of a fleet of 5 passat tdis, each getting around 50-75k miles in the year i was there, and each having between 100 and 300k miles. For all of em there were no major issues in record or in my care, just basic maintenance...couple wheel bearings were the worst issues i saw. i guess running lots of miles is better for them. always good to hear issues that people have run in to though...
  7. v90 would be so sexy but they're still damn expensive...looking at a v50 if i go the volvo route. i'm with you loyalty, over subarus...i've done enough damn headgaskets that i reaaaaly don't want to do them again. the cost of bmw parts has me scared, but they're easy enough to work on that I'm really leaning that way, get a bit of euro near-luxury in a comfortable, good looking wagon...perfect for a daily driver. i'm in.
