  1. My daughter's 08 Legacy has one bad front ball joint. Got a quote from the shop where she lives $250 to replace it. My son and I replaced the entire front suspension on his 09 OB last year. New LCAs, struts, knuckles, bearings, everything replaced. Son says this is the 'proper' way to do it and saves the headache of trying to pull the ball joint out of the steering knuckle. He and I are certainly able to do this job but the parts are like $1100 for the whole thing and this is a ~15 yr old Legacy. I did buy the ball joint puller tool but have never used it. How much of a PITA is it to remove the ball joint from the knuckle end?
  2. Exhaust - I'd try to find where the leak is and focus on that. Sometimes it can be just a leaky donut seal causing the issue. I don't have a 3.6l though and don't know that exhaust system. Cabin Air Filter - it is not that hard to do yourself. procedure is in the FSM and takes less than 30 minutes. It is mostly just removing plastic bits in the glove box to gain access to the filter behind it. Driver's Door sound - check behind the rubber gasket on the lower rear edges of the door for broken spot welds. My 2008 Legacy had this and the door sounded horrible when closing. Fixing requires drilling the spot welds out *carefully* to not hit the outer panel from the inside and then a very large flange STEEL pop rivet and appropriate rivet tool to fasten the pieces together again. Seal with RTV sealant well to the rubber seal and it should be good.
  3. Yeah, my LGT is stock ride height. The swaybar end has a downward bend in it but the section closest to the 90* bend is pretty much horizontal with the ~110mm endlinks. I've got a line on some new endlinks with stiff urethane bushings that are 112mm c-c which is awfully close to 110mm I have now so I am leaning towards getting those for replacements.
  4. My 09 LGT needs new rear endlinks. Sway bar is an upgraded one b4 I bought the car. It also has the orange reinforcement brackets. My current endlinks look to be adjustable in length and are about 110mm c-c of the mount bolts. These seem to be longer than I would expect them to be. What is the 'normal' rear endlink length?
  5. Thanks. I thought it might be a design difference but did not think about a desired change like making it 'smoother' by Subaru. Is there a way to make the 2009 shift more like the 2006 does? I never really use the paddle shifters on my 09 LGT because it is kinda slow to respond.
  6. I think I recalled seeing somewhere there was a change in the 5EAT somewhere around 2007 or 08. I have two of them that are dramatically different in how they upshift and am unsure why. My 09 LGT 5EAT is around 90k miles and trans fluid always serviced regularly. It shifts fine but the upshifts are nowhere near as sharp as the other one - the 06. Not like it shifts slow or revs between shifts it is just different. I find no real issue with how it shifts - just that it is different. My moms 06 Outback sedan 3.0H6 5EAT - about 92k miles and trans fluid always serviced regularly. Yes, the H6 is WAY smoother during acceleration than the LGT H4. This 5EAT when it upshifts under mid/full throttle it seems like it shifts WAY quicker. Smooth upshifts but it gives a noticeable kick felt even in the seat. Is the difference in 5EAT the design 2006 vs 2009 or might it be something related to throttle mgmt by the ECM/PCM during upshifts that makes the two 5EAT so different in personality?
  7. My 09 LGT again has a leaking radiator so I am exploring higher quality options than the OEM unit I put in ~7 months ago that is leaking at the top seam. So my understanding is that Koyorad, CSF, and Mishimoto are the options for all aluminum radiators. I have a 5EAT so the CSF with the built in oil cooler would seem to be best but yeah the price is way up there. None of the websites seem to list a radiator for a 09 Legacy GT so I am thinking that the same/similar year WRX is what people have been using. Is that right/wrong? What are other options that are cheaper than $650? Car is a DD and has never seen any type of track use.
  8. Put the video on your youtube account and then post the link here wherever you want in a post.
  9. So how do I post a short mp4 file in this forum? It is ~5 seconds and maybe 16MB in size.
  10. I am looking for a downpipe for an 09 LGT automatic
  11. Let me know if this looks right or not. I can easily reweld the support. This looks a bit rough is my thought https://www.ebay.com/itm/313616125549
  12. What is the difference between an Invidia downpipe for a manual trans vs an automatic? 09 LGT auto here and I found a downpipe off of a 2011 WRX/STI. Invidia's website shows the same part # for 05-09 LGT manual and 08-14 WRX/STI so this should bolt up. Their website does list a diff part# for the automatic though and I am unsure what the difference is.
  13. She just took the car to the store and she said she gave the radio a soft bump with her hand and it stopped blinking. I am comfortable taking electronics apart and soldering so that is a project for this summer I guess. Thanks much for the link to the other thread with info.
  14. Daughter came home this week from school. She said the radio and heating/ac display was flashing on and off. Here is a short video of the issue right after starting the car. Is it time for a new radio/HVAC unit? https://photos.app.goo.gl/D3DRxtsP5iGm8czu8
  15. So I originally saw items like this that seemed too good to be true... https://www.amazon.com/AutoShack-BC30008PR-Passenger-Replacement-Crosstrek/dp/B08DWJSSN1/ref=pd_ybh_a_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MTHVDDJTGDZT8C93TVKR I am now leaning towards just taking a few tools to the local u-pull-it to get two front calipers.
  16. I am now looking for replacement front calipers for our 2008 Legacy 2.5i Limited. Our daughter mostly drives this car at college. My son and I replaced the pads ~2 months ago with OEM but the front pads are wearing way different and we recall one side the slide pins were really stuck and hard to free up but they did loosen up so we put them back in place. I just want to replace the calipers and pads now to make it right. Looks like lots of choices on amazon but they are not looking the same as the stock calipers.
  17. Here is a pic of my car/trailer setup. Finished the trailer assembly a few months ago. Used it for the first time today to haul a new bed home to my wife's parents just south of the Twin Cities. Little car and little trailer. The car does not really know that there is something back there being towed the trailer is so light. Makes a lot of noise on bumps unless there is a bit of weight on it. I have to be very careful going in and out of the driveway as the hitch is pretty low on this car.
  18. So I've used this QuickSet to swap summer/winter wheels on my 2009 LGT and also on my 2008 Legacy 2.5i and my son's 2009 Outback 2.5 when we installed the TPMS modules. After updating it for winter/summer swap on my wife's 2018 Forester it stopped working on all three other 08/09 Legacy/Outback vehicles. I've tried many ways to recover the old DB software version with no success. It works fine on the 2018 Forester but is neutered on my other three vehicles. ATEQ support is responsive but denies there is any issue with the software and they gave up on the issue. Are there any other make devices to program the TPMS codes into the car's ECU?
  19. Pulled the leaking radiator from my 09 LGT this morning. Going to replace all the rubber coolant hoses down there by the exhaust. Hope my son returns home from work with a new radiator later tonight.
  20. For those of you that have replaced the small coolant hoses from the water pump and over to the oil cooler is it necessary to have the manifold off to replace the rear hose out of the back of the oil cooler or is there enough clearance from under and in between the manifold runs?
  21. Well, I just called my daughter who has my 08 Legacy 2.5i at college and the whole dash is sticky and my 09 LGT has the sticky dash as well so we have two that are bad. I might be buying new dash panels soon. It does not look like a fun job to replace these.
  22. My 09 Legacy GT sat outside today for ~3 hours in the sun and now I really notice the slick looking surface and the dash is sticky. Are they still covering these at all under the now expired warranty extension?
  23. I am having issues getting my ATEQ QuickSet to switch my car over to the summer wheels TPMS codes. Sensors are ~2yrs old and read out just fine with the VT31 code reader. I have used the Quickset on this car for the past two years for the swapover and have had zero issues until now. The QuickSet also worked just fine for the new winter wheels we recently bought for my wife's 2018 Forester. The one thing that is certainly different this time is the tune in the ECM. I bought a COBB AccessPort this winter and am running a stage1 93oct tune. Does anyone know if this would interfere with the TPMS code programming to the car? BTW, it will not read the TPMS codes in the car either like I did the first time I used the QuickSet.
  24. Once in a while one can find VDO SE10003 TMPS modules on rockauto for ~$16 each which is pretty cheap. I've used these and programmed them into our 3x 08-09 subies using an ATEQ Quickset unit for several years now
